Firstly, where did I say that they do not care about each other? What I said was that they were neither, as yet, in love with the other.
There are various stages in a relationship that lead eventually to love. Like a staircase. One is caring, the bottom one, then comes 2)protectiveness, then 3) affection, then 4) a sense of belonging, then 5) possessiveness, and finally 6) jealousy, which is the one unmistakeable symptom of romantic love.
Jalal is already at stage 1 and possibly also stage 2. He does not know it, however, and what he tells her yesterday is not a product of love. Only of a growing familiarity, and besides, there is no one else there but her. I think that as he was gasping her name, he wanted to tell her how sorry he was to have abandoned her in this mess, as a widow. He knows vaguely how bad that would be for her in her Rajput set up.
Jodha is at stage 1, moving towards stage 2. I say this because what she did for him yesterday was
in extremis, in a situation created by her own folly, and she knows that. So she would have done the same even if she had only dislike for him. It is another matter that she too does not know where she is and even less where she is going. That will dawn on her when she meets him on his sick bed, that what she then feels is not just relief engendered by her sense of guilt, but by the fear of a terrible loss that has now been dispelled. Jodha, doesn't hate him at all & has against her Will, begun to care for him too.. And it's only going to increase after this incident though I know she will put it down to kartavya & all.
