The man in white "Mahesh Das" arrives at Mughal Emperor Akbar's court because he has been invited there, but the guard at the gate demands a payment of 5 coins before he allows him in. Mahesh tells him he does not have the payment but shows the ring Akbar gave him as proof of his invitation. The guard then agrees to let him in on the condition that. he give the guard half of whatever reward Akbar gives Mahesh.
Mahesh agrees and when he appears before the king, instead of riches, he asks for 50 lashes across his back. Akbar his court are dumfounded and ask him why he wants 50 lashes. He explains the deal he made with the guard and Akbar demands the guard be presented before the court. Akbar then tells the guard that Mahesh has told them about their deal and Akbar has decided to give the him the entire reward instead of half. .The guard thanks Akbar, but then Akbar tells the guard what the reward really is and the guard drops to his knees and begs for mercy and is dragged away.
Then Akbar informs Mahesh that he is impressed with his keen mind and will not tolerate corruption and bribery. He offers Mahesh a place in his court, but the Mullah Dopiaza (fat man) protests saying that while Mahesh is clever, that doesn't earn him a place in the court. So Akbar challenges the Mullah to ask Mahesh a question and if Mahesh can answer correctly then not only will he have a place in the court, but the Mullah will bow and salute to Mahesh everyday for the rest of his life. The Mullah asks the question: "What am I thinking at this moment?"
Mahesh replies that the Mullah is praying to God for Akbar's good health and long life and is asking for Akbar's blessing to be always upon him.
Akbar then asks the Mullah if that is what he was thinking.
The Mullah, having no choice but to agree, admits that that is what he was thinking. Akbar and the rest of the court notice Mahesh's clever response which put the Mullah in an awkward predicament and all laugh. Akbar, now greatly impressed with Mahesh's keen mind, gives him the title "Birbal". "Bir" meaning mind, and "bal" meaning strength (though I dont know what language that is). And so Mahesh Das becomes Akbar's famous adviser Birbal, whos stories have been told for centuries.
