hi frnds,
I've read an interview of Sekhar Suman in a news article recently n thought to share wid u.
Here it goes::
Body & soul
From being in the judge's seat in The Great Indian Laughter Challenge on STAR One to facing the fire from the judges as a contestant in Sahara One's much-touted new musical reality show Jjhoom India, Shekhar Suman has done it all on the small screen. A t2 chat...
How does it feel to participate in a reality show?
Music is my passion. So I signed up for the show following the call of my heart. But I have been sorely disappointed. The real emphasis in Jjhoom India is not on one's musical abilities.
What is the emphasis on then?
That is what I am also trying to figure out. Look at the way Apara (Mehta, mentored by Parthiv Gohil) was ousted. She had scored maximum from the judges. But people didn't vote for her, so she could not be among the top three. The format is such that she became dependent on the other jodis to select her for the next round. Unfortunately no one did. So it all comes down to personal equations and enmities with your fellow contestants. She was quite venomous after the show. I could see why.
Would you say the show is like Big Brother?
Exactly. But the difference is Big Brother is all about your nature and temperament. When you go for a singing contest, you do not expect to be judged on such things. If I rub others the wrong way I could be thrown out.
Under such circumstances, do you give yourself a chance to win Jjhoom India?
It doesn't matter. I am here for personal gain, not personal glory. Sanjivani is a great mentor and I am looking to learn from the experience of performing before a live audience, to a live band.
Since you already have an album, don't you enjoy an edge?
I am a non-professional singer. I sing like I play cricket, chess and squash.
How would you rate the judges?
Shabana (Azmi) and Mahesh (Bhatt) are not singers. Being musical and knowing music are not the same. I came with the knowledge that Ashaji (Bhosle) would be one of the judges. Now that she isn't there, the marks don't matter. I am beyond all this.
You seemed miffed last week at Shabana Azmi's remark about fever being no excuse for a below-par performance.
That was a wrong comment to make. If I have fever and my voice goes, I may act but how would I sing? Judges should not be harsh. In American shows, judges are given a brief to be rude. It doesn't work in India. And if they do it to me, I'll give it back to them.
Are you making a comeback on the big screen?
Yes. I am playing a don who made a pledge to his dying father that he would reform. He tries every trick in the book but he fails. It has black humour.
Will you be flaunting your new-look body?
Not in the film. But I am enjoying it to the hilt. I was the first in the 40-plus league to go for six-pack abs. Now others are following me. Forty is today's 20.
Does your son like dad's new look?
My son Adhyayan is nine. He weighed 104 kg but he saw his dad and hit the gym. Now we work out together and both of us weigh 69 kg. You know what? We are playing brothers in a forthcoming movie!
