Saurabh Pandey always wanted to become an actor and therefore moved to Mumbai two years back. He was even lucky to sign two films but they did not work out. But Saurabh didn't give up. What kept him going were music videos. He also decided to audition for TV serials and finally landed a role in Synergy Adlab's Jiya Jale.

In fact, after he was selected to play the lead in Jiya Jale he got a call from Balaji for a show but Saurabh refused. "By the time I was called by Balaji I was already doing a workshop for this show and there was no point in walking out of Jiya Jale. It is a daily but conceptually it is not confined to kitchen politics. More than a soap it is a daily drama," says the young actor.

Ask him what's the difference between the two and he says a daily drama is more cinematic where the story comes first. "But a daily soap follows certain convention and grammar. Often it is far-fetched, stretched, addictive and vicarious. Jiya Jale is a drama serialised on a daily basis and follows certain kind of visualisation and dramatic conventions," he adds.

At heart Jiya Jale is the love story of a young girl called Sunaina who struggles to find a balance between independence and family values. A wealthy architect comes into her life and they seem destined to be together. But they are caught up in a whirlpool of hatred, deceit and betrayal which changes their lives. "But even in the most trying circumstances, the two hold their love for each other above all conventions," says Saurabh who plays the rich architect Chandan in the show.

Elaborating more on his role, Saurabh says Chandan hails from a big business empire, yet has always dreamt of working for the poor. "Chandan is honest, righteous, just and morally strong. He is very close to his mother, but is at loggerheads with his father. He is a visionary architect who believes in raising the standards of the underprivileged with his architectural plans. He feels that love and marriage are great emotions, but not meant for him as he is focused on his work," he reveals.

But which way does the love story go? "Well, when Chandan and Sunaina meet they fall madly in love and feel passionately for each other. But situations tear them apart," is his tongue-in-cheek reply, adding, "They are forced into different directions." Recalling his days of struggle in Mumbai, Saurabh says he came here after doing his schooling and higher secondary in Dehradun.

"I didn't know how to go about asking for work. Since nothing was happening, I did a course in acting. But getting work was quite difficult. Films didn't happen. But I am glad that I am doing television and playing the lead in my debut show," he says in conclusion.

Sriti: Emotions never become obsolete
9 Jan 2008, 0000 hrs IST,HARSHADA REGE ,TNN

Sriti Jha feels that she has been really lucky in bagging a lead role so early in her career. Sriti, who plays Sunaina in Jiya Jale on 9X, was last seen in a show called Dhoom Machaao Dhoom.

After completing her graduation in Delhi, she came to down to Mumbai and the first audition that she appeared for got her the role of Sunaina. And though Sriti identifies with the character that she is playing, there are some differences too. "I do identify with the character I am playing, but it's after all a character. It's fun to play a character that you can identify with," she says.

Apart from television, Sriti is fond of reading. Talk to her about books and the actress can speak for hours together.

"I recently read Khaled Hosseini's A Thousand Splendid Suns and I loved it as much as his earlier book The Kiterunner. Right now I am reading The Circle of Reason by Amitav Gosh. I am a huge fan of Amitav Ghosh's work. I wish I could meet him," gushes Sriti. No wonder then that the actress doesn't complain about her hectic shooting schedules. "I always have my books for company," she explains.

Sriti also loves watching comedy shows. "I am scared of attempting comedy though. It's really tough to get the timing right. But I would definitely want to give it a shot in the future," she says. Considering the fact that she is well-read, does she find saas-bahu serials regressive? Sriti takes a diplomatic stand and says, "I cannot speak for others but my serial is definitely not regressive. It's about a girl's love for her family and her man. How can that be regressive? Emotions never become obsolete whether they are towards your family or your boyfriend."

Speaking about life apart from work, Sriti says, "I am very much single. With my kind of schedule where's the time to commit to someone?"

Shabaana's faith in fasting!

Shabaana Mullani, the girl who did a cameo in Anurag Basu's debut show Love Story and is playing parallel lead in Jiya Jale on 9X, believes in the power of fasting.

She is a Muslim who keeps roza, but she also fasts every Thursday and Friday for Sai Baba and Mahalaxmi. "I have been fasting on Thursdays since three years and on Fridays since last four months.

I fast because I believe in the power of fasting. It makes me feel good so why not and its all about faith and has nothing to do with religion. I don't know why people get surprised," she says.

Manish Nagdev aka Chinu of Dulhan is quitting the show. The actor already has one show on 9X, Jiya Jale. It's also heard that Manish is all set to do a new show on Zee. Here Manish talks about his career on television.

Aren't you happy with the leap in 'Dulhan'?
I'm happy with the leap in Dulhan but for me it would be too awkward to call Sharad and Divyanka beta aur beti as they are of my age. I think I have done my bit for the show and even the production house is ok with it.

How is 'Jiya Jale' going on?
It's one of the best shows on the channel and I'm enjoying it to the fullest. I have always said that I love to do variety. This show is giving me a different role and thus I love it.

Tell us something about your new show?
I can't reveal anything but yes, I'm doing a new show for Zee. I'll be playing a parallel lead and a different character. I play the role of software engineer and have a look of a boy next door. It could be said that I'm a charmer in the show. The title and the time slot of the show are not decided as yet.

Torture ends for Saurabh Pandey

TV Specials

Amidst several actors who feel 'macho' and handsome sporting a beard, here is an actor who got frustrated with life and work by growing stubble for nearly twenty days! Yes, we are talking of Saurabh Pandey, who plays the lead, Chandan in Jiya Jale. It is heard that the actor had a tough time during the shoot, and felt awkward to remain without a shave for nearly three weeks.

The young lad says, "I had to restrain myself from shaving off my beard and it was very difficult for me to go on like that, but in the end, I'd do anything for my work. When the shoot was over and I got to shave my stubble, I felt so good and even got compliments for my clean look". Saurabh, we sympathise with you for sure and can say only one thing – Welcome to the crazy world of Television!!
