Jhalak's Gender Swap - Review

Firstly, I do not like the concept of gender swap. What exactly are you judging the contestants on?
How good they do the mannerisms of the opposite gender or how well they dance? The episode and I theme in general is so laced with cliches.
When girls have to dance like a guy, why do they only do tapori, mavali style stuff? And for guys why always become an item girl of some sort. The episode was so dull and whats with everyone doing bollywood? Where is the jhalak, where I saw so many dance forms week after week. Samba, salsa, rumba etc. What about other Indian dance forms. Bollywood might be considered a dance form in some of the western shows, but it should be totally banned from being considered a dance form in Indian shows. Don't we already see enough of it on movies?

Also, whats with the studio audience shouting 10! Just score 10 if you want to, and stop asking other judges for 10. Its so childish.

I don't know what judges were scoring on, but clearly it looked like it wasn't about mannerisms because if it were so, nora would certainly have scored higher and salman lower.

Nora - was in the tapori character but her act was so dull. 13/15 for mannerism and 11/15 for dance. 24/30
Arjun - concept was good but it does limit you in ways which could be seen through the performance. 11/15 for mannerism and 10/15 for dance. 21/30
Surveen - I enjoyed her act. Enjoyed watching sanam more than her. Mannerisms 13/15 and dance 12/15. Total 25/30
Salman - Dude!! Did you ever see hema malini do maa kali tandav? Now I dont hope him to dance like hema ji but seiously, what did he do? I love mythological acts but I was so sad about this one. The act was timed really well. Mannerisms 10/15 and dance 14/15. 24/30 from me.
Karishma - This was one disaster act. Joke being, the studio audience shouting once more after she performed. She was completely out of character. Dance was so thanda. Mannerisms - 9/15 and dance 11/15. 20/30 in total.
Shantanu - He looked super pretty 😃. Ofcourse I do not expect the guy to become a perfect girl and a girl be to a perfect guy. But Shantanu's efforts clearly showed. Mannerism 13/15 and dance 14/15. 27/30.
Shakti - Shantanu did have tough competition from Shakti for being the pretty lady of the night. Great comeback shakti. Mannerism 13/15 and dance 14/15. 27/30.

Having scored everyone the way I did, I also want to add a few observations about the contestants.
I see so much humility from contestants especially Shantanu and Shakti when they were scored really well and praised by the judges too.
But salman! His face when shantanu got a 10 + 10, his face when Shakti was being complimented, his face when Shantanu was announced as the winner for the third consecutive week just puts me off big time. Dude thats absolutely no winner quality.

Seconded! 👏

There are so many forms out there, and all we ever see is Bollywood/Contemporary, thank god there's a little Hip Hop 'cause of Shantanu. I don't expect them to be great at other dance forms, but I want to see them try at least. I haven't watched the last season, but the Jhalak I remember used to be so varied at dance forms. 😕

There are times when a contestant happens to be such a darling of the makers, that they do everything to make sure he wins. Happened with a season of Survivor too. But lets not forget, that such blatant interference would only reflect in the poor TRPs and reception the season gets. I hope JDJ9 doesn't go that way. I am tired of seeing the deserving ones loose.

Hai naa! I remember there was this time when I would be eager to see the dance form each one is performing, and there were so many dance forms I never heard of being attempted. Every episode had a freshness. But week after week of bollywood!! Even on NB7, week after week all the jodis did was bollywood. This was the same jhalak where we saw oddissi, kalaripayattu, semi classical, fusion what not but its so meh now!

Hopefully coming up soon. Let's see what the 'regional theme' on Saturday gives us! 😃
