Renuka back with her smile

After going into hibernation for five years, Renuka Shahane has made a comeback on the small screen. Gauri Kohli meets the actress as she talks about her comeback with the show Jeete Hain Jiske Liye

Tell us something about your journey on television.

I have done several shows on the small screen including Sailabh, Kora Kaagaz and Imtehaan. It has been a wonderful experience for me so far. All the characters that I have played, be it Shivani, Priya or Pooja, are close to my heart. I have learnt a lot in all these years and got an opportunity to work with some of the best names in the industry.

You are making a comeback on the small screen after five years. Reason?

Taking a break in my career was a conscious decision as I wanted to spend more time with my family. My marriage to Ashutosh (Rana) and the birth of my children took most of my time. Even now, when I have made a comeback, I still have to devote more time to my family and sons, who are aged 4 and 2.

You are back in Jeete Hain Jiske Liye. What made you accept this role?

I quite love my character Anjali in the show. She's a lot like me. Jeete Hain is a story of a mother for whom family matters most. This highlights the true essence of an Indian woman. Anjali has been brought up in a middle-class family with deep-rooted values. But as she tries to find happiness, she's falsely implicated in a murder. It is a heart-rending story full of twists and turns.

How is it different from the saas-bahu sagas we see today?

Jeete Hain is an adaptation of a Spanish show. Unlike other long-running shows on TV today, it has a definite beginning, middle and a well-defined end.

Any upcoming projects with your husband Ashutosh?

There are no films or shows lined up where we are cast against each other. But I have written a script keeping him in mind and would love to direct him one day.
