Jassi goes on holiday

The final episode will take viewers into Mona Singh's residence

Mona 'Jassi' Singh

Subhash K Jha

With couch potatoes bidding farewell to Jassi Jaisi…Koi Nahin in the final episode this Thursday, they will also be given a peek into Mona 'Jassi' Singh's residence in Lokhandwala, Mumbai.

"It's such a beautiful send-off," says Mona as she prepares for her first vacation in three years. "In the last episode to be telecast on Thursday the real and reel Jassi will come together. My family from the soap will merge with my real family. We've shot in my home with my parents, my elder sister who has flown down from New Zealand to be with me and her son. So it's like one large joint family saying goodbye."

For Mona, the goodbye isn't quite what she had imagined it to be. "I thought I'd be doing cartwheels out of excitement when Jassi... got over. But on the last day I cried and cried," she says. "I was supposed to laugh in my last shot but I couldn't bring myself to do so. I was feeling sad to leave the serial behind. Jassi had become a part of my life. The characters were my family. I ceased to be Mona, I was Jassi for three years. So of course, there's bound to be a feeling of emptiness."

But the emptiness is accompanied with a feeling of relief. "I can finally take a holiday. In fact, I'm leaving for a 20-day holiday to Kerala with my family," says Mona. "I think I've earned this break. But I plan to return to television after the break. I can't give up what I've earned with such difficulty. Jassi... has given me everything. I've several offers. I will definitely take up a soap though I am not sure if I am ready for another daily. So even though I've a movie on hand I'll definitely do another serial. I see myself as a television actor first."

Mona isn't averse to a sequel to Jassi... either. "In fact, my directors for Jassi…Deeya and Tony Singh are in discussion with me right now for another serial. Let's see. I'm ready to take it on as long as it remains interesting. Serials should end before they begin to drag their feet," she says.

if memory serves me right, ms.singh, you told the same reporter that it was disheartening to know that jjkn was not ending...and that playing jassi was a torture and you had to remind yourself again and again that you are not jassi and jassi is not you....

Mona Singh wants the show to end

Reena Thapar Kapoor

I am bored, and tired of playing Jassi," says Mona Singh. Like everyone else, she too has been hearing rumours about Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin going off air, and she can't wait for the day it actually does. "Every time I hear that Jassi... is going off air, I make my plans to go on a long vacation, only to learn that it was just a rumour. That is disheartening," she laughs. "After all, how many new developments can you show in a soap that has been on air for almost three years?"

Singh has had problems with the show for a while now, often expressing disagreement over certain scenes and dialogue? "I've been unhappy about various things on the show," she says. "For instance, I've had issues with my name changing three times on the show – from Jasmeet Walia to Jessica Bedi to Neha Shastri. At those times I did voice my opinion and tell the concerned people about my dissatisfaction with the way things were going. Obviously, they had their reasons for changing names, and we had to go ahead with it. Sometimes, scenes and dialogue were altered when I asked for changes, sometimes they weren't."

When launched as a plain Jane, Mona Singh was, perhaps, the only female actor who deserved to be called a 'star' in the truest sense, in the televison industry. But the tide turned when the bespectacled Jasmeet Walia metamorphosed in the glamorous Jassi. Apparently, the show that has lost its original track almost a year ago is, now, only dragging along.

"Finally the show has to end one day and I'd rather it ends with grace." The actress says that there has been no official confirmation on the date when it's likely to go off air.

The only thing that she's sure of is that, when Jassi... does wind up, she is going to sleep for 48 hours at a stretch.

Meanwhile, Singh is already in the process of grooming herself for her silver screen debut. "I've lost a lot of weight already," she says. "So much so that people fail to recognise me nowadays."

She has signed a contract with Bobby Pushkarna the producer of Page 3. "The film will go on the floors around June 2006," she says. "I'll plan my life anew after my contract with Sony expires in May."

Jassi...

No, don't call me that any more. I am Mona. I have to find my own identity now. It's been three years! I was zapped mentally... Imagine telling people all the time that I wasn't Mona, that I was this make-believe character named Jassi. Initially, I sort of enjoyed the anonymity. But after a while it became a mental torture to be 'Jassi' even at awards functions. I used to plead with my channel (Sony) to let me be myself at least at the awards function. Because, it was Mona Singh and not Jassi who received the awards. But they insisted

So how did you cope?

My family was my reality check. My father kept telling me to wait for Jassi's makeover to happen. Then I'd at least look like myself...I had become like Clark Kent, waiting to be Superman. I used to keep repeating to myself, 'Jassi isn't me and I am not Jassi.' In the morning when I'd wake up my hands would automatically go to my face to look for the wig, the glasses...

After "Jassi...", Mona wants to throw away the garb of Jassi and create a place for herself as Mona Singh in showbiz.

"I have to find my own identity now. It's been three years! I was zapped mentally... Imagine telling people all the time that I wasn't Mona, that I was this make-believe character named Jassi."

now what was that😕......a total chamelion😡........atleast dont give interviews to popular dailies and scribes and then become the laughing stock.............i respect apurva for that..he never goes back and forth on what he earlier said👏

that would be great😛...mona is a great actress and it would be nice if she's back on small screen with apurva as they share a great chemistry👏👏

Thanks, honey. BUFFIE, why don't you read my highlighted part. SHE THOUGHT SHE WOULD BE HAPPY..but it's obviously DIFFERENT when reality hits.
