Jassi wins Jhalak... title

May the best dancer win? Well, Mona Singh's popularity seems to have had the edge over Shveta Salve's talent

Subhash K Jha

It's final. The first winner of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa is Mona 'Jassi' Singh. This puts an and to the suspenseful contest between the two finalists Mona Singh and Shveta Salve and their respective choreographers, Toby and Longi.

While Mona was over the moon minutes after the SMS votes from audiences declared her winner, Shveta, considered a far more superior dancer by most and declared the best dancer since Madhuri Dixit by judge Sanjay Leela Bhansali, lost by a narrow margin.

Hours before the verdict Shveta had said, "I've done my best. Even if Mona wins I'd be equally happy. I'm having a party for family and friends regardless of whether I finally win or not. I've enjoyed every second of this contest, although I must admit some comments by fellow-contestants did affect me personally and also affected my chances adversely."

Mona on the other hand is ecstatic about the open support provided to her by the contestants. "I'm referring especially to Pooja Bedi who went out of her way to express her support for me. It was very, very sweet of her. Considering I was no dancer to begin with, I think this whole experience has changed my life . Yeah, I'm over the moon," said Mona.

Jhalak's finale charms with its flaws!

Everyone foresaw Mona Singh take the crystal trophy home and that's exactly what happened last night on the grand finale of Sony's Jhalak Dhikhhla Ja. While Mona, (showered by kisses, sparkles and congratulations) celebrated her moment in time with choreographer Toby, Shveta Salve found it a little difficult to control and was in tears the very next minute. The final episode was worth a watch both for its charm and flaws!

Shveta's bewitching performance on Madhuri's Ek Do Teen left everybody spellbound, as the striking resemblance between the telly star and celluloid's superstar was unbelievable! While Longgi's choreography was out of this world, Toby too didn't lag behind. Piya tu ab toh aaja was the sensous track chosen by the punjabi kudi, Mona.

But somehow the dance of envy act perfomed by the two graceful ladies fell flat. This round was certainly meant to get the leading beauties in an agressive mode, but it made them look a little dry.

The highlight of the show were the twosome, Archana Singh and Parmeet Sethi who lived up to everyone's expectations. But looks like anchoring has mellowed down the fire in their dance which resulted in a very bland performance. But the judges still went gaga over their dull performance!

Mona and Shveta's fellow contestants performed in a way which was never seen before. Mahesh Manjrekar as usual in his unusual style stole many hearts. Along with Mahesh, Ajay Jadeja too gave in his best for the finale and for the first time was not termed as a 'teapot'. The duo danced on Aa Dekhe Zara and set the stage ablaze. What took everyone's breath away was Pooja Bedi's stunning act on her debut hindi song Pehla Nasha. She gave her choreographers a tough time as her beauty and elegant moves grabbed all the attention.

Akashdeep Sehgal who has raked up many controversies post his exit from the show seemed to be very cool and calm. His stunning looks coupled with an awesome Indian outfit appeared to be made for each other! And his witty answer to Archana when asked whom will the junta support of the two ladies was something which could not be missed!

Rati Agnihotri and Sanjeev Kapoor maintained their position as mediocre performers but their efforts could not be overlooked!

The choreographers geared up for some wild performances. The weight in their performance left Shilpa Shetty's (One of the three judges) tongue twisted. Instead of saying they deserve a big round of applause, she said "We deserve to give them a big round of applause!" Well, Shilpa we guess you are better off with your 'superb'!

Farah Khan herself took to the stage with all the choreographers dancing on her fave Gori Gori. The finale would have been incomplete without Shilpa Shetty's hot moves on the dance floor. She shaked a leg on her renonwed item number UP Bihar lootne and earned many accolades!

Pooja, habitually honest, was very vocal about her preference between the two and said it aloud that her vote is reserved for Mona!

Farah certainly pushed it too far when the hosts and judges got nostalgic, saying, in Jhalak... they gave Rs.500 instead of Rs.100. This comment or taunt was very blatant and sounded tacky!

Heartbeats pounded big time when the most awaited moment was drawing near; the announcement of the winner who would take home Rs. 5000000 and the trophy. Immediately after Mona was declared the winner Archana straight away went up to Shveta for her comment, also Shilpa first gave a standing ovation to Shveta and then congratulated Mona which seemed to be very funny!

And calling Shveta a winner even before congratulating Mona (who is the actual winner) made it very apparent that even though Mona has won the contest, Shveta deserved it more! Did they suffer from a memory lapse that it's a reality show?

All in all, the grand finale was worth a watch if we marginalize those evident blemishes!

Mona, jassi,jessica...

Rishi Majumder

How did a model bag Jassi's role?
I did not know the role I was auditioning for. But when I met Deeya (Singh, the producer) I tripped and fell. I think that (to match Jassi's clumsiness) plus the Punjabi accent and the middle class background clinched it.

Your favourite food…
…homemade salads and soups! I can't eat anything else because of my weight loss programme.

The best and worst things about being Jasmeet Walia.
The best — my fans' love; the worst — hiding my identity.

After Jassi Jaisi… what avatar would you vie for?
Rani Mukherjee in Black — a complete contrast to her previous glamourous avatars.

Wouldn't Jassi's public perception stand in the way of this leap?
I have broken that mould with the glamourous dancing in Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. So I'm prepared for the next challenge.

The most touching compliment from a fan?
Post Jassi's make-over, an old lady saying, "I'm so happy. I feel as if my own daughter's finally started looking pretty."

Jasmeet Walia, Jessica Bedi, Neha Shastri. Who's the closest?
There's a part of Jassi in me. And I'm close to Jessica because we're both models… and both have had to hide identities.

And what does looking good mean to you?
It's very important in my field!

Some people feel Jassi's makeover betrays the essential point of the serial.
Look, it's a show for entertainment. There has to be drama. I have been told that Jassi's character was highly unrealistic. But those glasses and braces still made for interesting viewing.

Your favourite dance number and move.
The Jive, on any damn Bollywood number.

Funniest blooper…
I had to dance during the press conference of Nach Baliye. I fell down in front of a bunch of media-persons, with my dance instructor laughing his head off.

You've mentioned falling before. Co-incidence?
Rubbish! I'm a natural (laughs)!

FREUDIAN SNIP
Award: More!
Karan: A very, very special friend
Cooking: Natural
Chotu: Umm… my nickname.
Alias: Jaspreet, Jessica, Mona… stop!
Beauty: Skin deep
Ugliness: In my cupboard!
Endorsements: Great, fun and… money!
Sona: My sister!

F or Mona Singh, who could not im- age herself dancing, winning the Jhalak Dikhla Jaa title means a lot. "Of course, it has made me a better dancer. I'm ready to dance around trees," she says. No, she has not signed any film as of now and wants to take it easy. "Whatever I do has to be more challenging than my character Jassi. A role, be it in films or serials, which allows me to do something different is what I'm looking for," Mona makes it clear. In town to talk about the cause of un- derprivileged children, Mona has a message for Delhiites: "You made me win Jhalak... now it's your turn to do something for those children who can't go to schools. Do whatever you can. Even a little contribution can make a difference. " Quiz her about what she likes about saadi Dilli, and the beautiful actress answers immediately, "I love coming here in the winter. Yahan ki kulfi is just wonderful!" And what about her other love, Karan Oberoi. She takes a diplomatic stand, as she answers this one, "I'm here to prove myself as an actress. But media, I guess, is more interested in knowing who am I dating or where are we dining tonight. So, when- ever a journalist calls me up to talk about it, I end up with a simple 'No comment' stand." But is marriage on the cards? "No, not at all. It's too early to even think about that," she says. You can catch her hosting a reality show, which is tentatively titled Ex- treme Makeover. "The show will help those women who have been tortured by men. We'll help them look, and of course, feel better," she explains.

After 'Jassi..' what?

After Hours Correspondent
Tuesday, December 12, 2006 23:59 IST

Mona Singh may play a physically challenged character in a TV show

She's no dumb belle, as she proved in 'Jassi Jaissi Koi Nahin' (Sony). But now Mona Singh is slated to play the role of a physically challenged girl in a forthcoming Sony show.

After 'Jassi..' Mona had said that she would like to combine working in TV, films and radio. Her return to Sony as a participant in 'Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa' (Sony) and her subsequent win, brought her back into the limelight. She will host 'Extreme Makeover' (Sony).

Sources say the creative heads at the channel are clear that she will not be portrayed as just another girl, nor will her look resemble Jassi's in any way. The concept for the show, yet untitled, has been penned by Anuradha Tiwari. Mona, however, doesn't want to divulge much. "It's too soon to comment right now on it," she says. "Talks are still going on," is all she will reveal

Mona Singh signs Sony show

After keeping everybody guessing about her next move, Mona Singh, better remembered as Jassi of the popular Jassi Jaise Koi Nahin has signed a new show. Titled Khamoshi the serial is slated to feature on Sony in the next few months.

Prouced by Ashwin Verma of Klassic Studios, the show is a story that promises to be different from the usual family dramas. Informs a source from the show, "We have roped in Mona Singh and the male lead has not been finalized at the moment. We are pitching the show for a primetime slot on Sony."

When contacted for her comments, Mona said, "I cannot really talk about it at the moment." Sandiip Sikcand, the Chief Creative Director of Sony Television says, "Yes, it is a fact that Khamoshi would feature on our channel. It's an early stage to divulge details about it but the show will be placed in the primetime slot."

Mona recently won the Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa contest and has also signed up a bollywood film. Her portrayal of the unconventional protagonist Jassi was seen as a shift away from the stereotypical representations. Directed by Deeya and Tony Singh and produced by SET India, the show was based upon the Colombian soap opera Yo soy Betty, la fea.

With Star all geared up to unleash KBC with SRK, the rivals are up to take on the fight. Jassi's loyal audience would surely celebrate this news which sees their hero return after a long time. But, one thing for sure; they would love Jassi to break the Khamoshi herself.

Real love in reel life

February 14, 2007

Karan Oberoi and Mona Singh "For the last five years, I have been performing on Valentine's Day. This year, it will be no different!" says Karan, who is currently dating Mona Singh. However, he has a fond memory of a special Valentine's Day. "Five years back when I was performing in Kolkata and singing Kabhie Kabhie Mere Dil Mein, a 14-year old girl came over and gave me a rose. I invited her on stage and we danced together on the song," he says.

Karan had forgotten the incident until last December when he was working out in a Mumbai gym. "A girl came up to me and asked me do you remember me? I said no. Then she reminded me of the incident. She wanted to be a model and had shifted base to Mumbai. She told me how I made her Valentine's Day special then," says Karan.

Ranjib Mazumder

Gaurav Gera, best known as Nandu from Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin is going to be the Union Finance Minister. No, the actor is not taking up politics but will don the role of our Finance Minister P. Chidambaram on a news channel to present the budget.

An excited Gaurav says, "When I was approached by one of my friend to present this show, I was a little apprehensive. But, my friend eventually convinced me that it's not going to be a spoof. With all due respect to our great Finance Minister, I will be presenting the budget in a light-hearted manner, so that even a layman can understand the details. I am very excited about my new role."

How is he preparing for the role? "Playing a big wig on-screen is not a joke. And playing an intellectual like Chidambaram is even tougher. So, whenever I play any character I tend to follow the character's culture and accent. As he is a South Indian, my mannerisms, costume and accent will be very South Indian. But, I will take care to not make the show very complicated by using simple language," he adds.

Gaurav says, "Meanwhile, I am busy with a comedy show Ha Ha Ha. Besides that I have just finished a movie titled Woodstock Villa."

Kidding about Kids!

Amongst Tellywood actresses, it's uncommon to find them going the family way immediately after their marriage. If a minimum of 5 years gap is maintained between marriage and childbirth amongst common folks, it's much beyond that
for actresses of the small screen as it is the general conception that having a child may hinder their acting career, which being a demanding one, takes up almost 16-18 hours a day, 25 days a month. Gita Hari talks to some childless actresses to find out their reason for postponing their motherhood.

SHILPA SAKLANI:

Married to actor Apurva Agnihotri, they have come together in Jassi on Sony and Nach Baliye 1 on Star One and make for a lovely and loving couple. She is popular as Ganga of KSBKBT on Star Plus and also
hosted the show Fame X on SAB TV.

Speaking on their plans of starting a family, Shilpa says, "Maybe in a year or two. I am a laidback person and my career is of no consequence to me and my priority is my marriage. I need Apurva to settle a little more and by then I will be 25, which I think will be the right age for me to conceive. I often dream of that day when our chungu-mungu can pakau Apurva on the sets."
