New Delhi: It's not the avant-garde designs at Meera Sarees, Sarojini Nagar that are luring customers but the name that each sari bears that grabs their attention. Mukesh Lakhwani of Meera Sarees has named each piece after a famous telly bahu. And their decision to give the sari a name depends on the TRP of the serials. Right now it's Tulsi of Kyunki…who is calling the shots. The green and blue bandhini sari that Tulsi wears is a show-stopper and women are also opting for saris with Kyunki...printed on them.
For those of you who didn't know, these off screen sassy bahus with their streaked hair and halter neck blouses are setting trends for many middle-class housewives in the capital.
"Whenever we have a new stock of saris from Surat, we select a few of them and give them a name. So housewives addicted to TV make sure shot buyers. We have at least 10 to 12 customers asking for such saris in a day," says Lakhwani.
Women today aren't just channel surfing to remain updated about the lives of their favourite soap characters but also to gage if their new trouser would look good with the recently bought Kashish inspired bell sleeve blouse.
Nim Sood who designs the wardrobe for Balaji films takes imitation as a compliment. "Television unlike films remains fresh in your memory because you see it almost daily. Plus every woman likes to look good, whether she is 20 or 70 years old. So, I pay special attention to the wardrobe of Kashish in Kahin To Hoga and Baa in Kyunki."
Soap princess Ekta Kapoor, was quoted as saying, "Women love good clothes. That is also one of the reasons why they watch my serials. A majority of them identify with the costumes and jewellery while 25 per cent aspire for it."
At present Meera Sarees sells the Jassi sari for
Rs 350 and you can buy the Kumkum sari for just Rs 400. The most expensive is the Tulsi sari that is priced at Rs 500, but the price varies according to the serial's popularity. The saris come in various fabrics, ranging from chiffon, georgette and net. But the focus flowy fabrics that accentuate the figure.
Though this craze has recently crossed the shores and entered Pakistan. "I had recently visited Pakistan and was amazed to see that not only Kumkum saris but the jhumkas were also a rage," says Juhi Parmar better-known as Kumkum of the TV serial by the same name. Not just bahus the vamps too are not far behind. The Ramola Sikand (Kahin Kissi Roz) and Komolika (Kasauti Zindagi Ki ) look is liked by the city's wannabes. But the actress is thrilled by the attention and takes it as a token of the audience's appreciation. "In future if I ever open my own sari store, I know it'll do well," says Urvashi Dholakia.
