It's finally happening. Jassi's much-delayed makeover in the popular soap Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin on Sony TV is set for early March, according to Tarun Katial, executive vice president programming, Sony Entertainment Television.
What's more, there's a real-life socialite behind it: Mumbai-based former Miss India-turned party queen Queenie Dhody has been roped in to give Jassi the much-awaited new look.
Last week, Dhody and Mumbai-based photographer Vikram Bawa tried out about "two-three" looks for the new, improved Jassi in a photo shoot with model Mona Singh who plays the part of the bespectacled secretary in the TV serial.
Shooting is now on for the relevant episodes marking the turnaround and Katial modestly hopes that the makeover episode will register a TRP of "4-5" up from the current "3-4".
But what Jassi will look like is a million dollar question and predictably, everyone concerned is tightlipped. Dhody claims she hasn't zeroed in on one look as yet as "it is going to depend on the occasion" but has created an Indian and an Indo-western look to glam up Indian television's most popular ugly duckling.
The clothes are by Mumbai designer Seema Khan though Dhody says she may even use a Tarun Tahiliani outfit.
As for the socialite, she will also get to feature in one of the episodes herself, says Katial. The lady, however, is rather guarded about whether she will or won't appear on screen.
So what prompted Sony TV to sign up Dhody for the country's most-awaited task? Apart from the fact that Dhody has been a beauty queen herself, it was probably her current job at Mid Day, Mumbai's popular afternoon daily, that inspired Sony to appoint her to deliver the new-look Jassi.
For the last four months, Dhody has been writing a column in the paper where she gives new identities to randomly selected young women. The Mid Day column, where she's been giving the city's average Janes fortnightly makeovers, is hugely popular and landed her the Sony job.
Surprisingly, even Dhody did not expect the column on makeovers to be such a big hit.
"My main work is the jewellery business," says the socialite who has been dabbling in jewellery design for the last one-and-half years. "When Mid Day offered this to me, I wasn't quite sure whether to accept it. But I decided to do it any way. I never thought it would become so big..."
The new found success with makeovers, however, has meant that she will now look at this entirely new line of work "in a professional way".
While Dhody says she donates all her earnings from her Mid Day job to charity, she is tightlipped about what Sony is paying her for Jassi's reinvention. But whatever be the money involved, new beauty business avenues have already opened up for her.
