I'm not from India, so I don't really know how mental health patients are treated there.
I just wanted to know if in India they really do chain up mentally ill patients? I've also seen this done on Tere Naam, but thought that was just for dramatic impact.

I wasn't going to make a post on this because I thought it might offend people. But then when I reply to any posts about Ravish chaining up Atharva, no one really replies to my posts even if they're unbiased. Like when I clearly stated I'm blaming the writers rather than Ravish, I didn't get any response. I feel like my views were right and that other restraints can be found, and maybe people agreed with that but didn't want to say it? Then I thought it's weird how some people find it normal and ok to chain someone up, and thought maybe they do that in some places in India.

And before anyone tells me they're a doctor, nurse, mental health worker or something, and they know better than me, I'd just like to make it clear that I'm from the UK and don't know about india.

I have however studied psychology and mental health law. I know the rules and guidelines that have to be followed in the UK. Trust me when I say you can end up in prison if you used chains on a mentally ill patient like they have done to Atharva.

Hey
I know you said not to mention our profession but just for some impact I thought I'd mention I'm a Nurse in the UK LOL Although not a Mental Health Nurse! =))

You have a raised a good question; I think a lot of us would like to know how it is in India. As you mentioned here we have strict legislations and guidelines to follow when dealing with such patients.. I read a few people's comments about the restraining culture within the mental institutions in India. Is it really that insensitive?!

Somebody with knowledge and understanding please enlighten us. I'm hoping against hope it's not that terrible in India or any other country for that matter.. :/

Well i have been to psychiatry posting during my mbbs days and last yeae during my internship..
Mentally ill patients are treated like babies and are given all types of help and support..
Mostly we dont admit them .. we send them home advice few counselling sessions and then keep following up until they are normal..
Restraining is not done .. nor ect(shock in colloquial) is given unless its a severe form of disease. Mostly they aee prescribed drugs and then behaviour therapies
What they show on tv is exaggeration and falsification of mental health and treatment of mental disorders.. no psychiatric patient is treated this way inany part of d world..
And yeah i am in india

No, i dont think they do that in real.
If you are watching any of these shows, esp SP shows, always take it with a pinch of salt. They always exaggerate for drama purpose.

Hi Khushi..
I am not a doctor but there are two cases of physically and mentally challenged people in my vicinity.. a boy and a girl - both are young enough... Restraint is seldom used but even if there is no other option like during physiotherapy session or when the girl has to be taken out on wheelchair, specially designed cloth belts is what I have seen.. They work as restraints also and are enuf comfortable to the patient with required padding, so it does not hurts them... But even then it is rarely rarely used... Slapping, yes I have seen but then they go quite out of control.. Like once the boy was screaming so much that had he not been calmed down, he wud have started choking hence the mother had to slap him or when once he was about to hit his sister...

I agree with u chaining should not have been used ... There were way way more better and " EDUCATED" methods...But what to say...
Audience also buys anything ... CVs too sell anything... And ultimately we too have to keep watching nything... 😆

i guess you replied to my thread but i was busy I replied to shorter posts but thought of replying to you later but it did not mean i did not want to reply
The thing is from no hindi serial not even from a hollywood movie i expect a 100 percent correct medial treatment otherwise they cannot dramatize things In India in A class asylums restrainers are used to tie extremely violent patients to keep them in control when they are way way out of control It does happen in reality and not so high standards they use anything to bring a violent person chain , rope

and sorry no law is there to send Ravish to jail because he did not tie him to torture him He got him tied only when he was way out of control Keeping a person chained with the intention to torture him or to bring a violent person in control are all together two different things

Haven't seen any of your posts on the subject, but I made a similar one, a couple of days back cuz certain medical myths required debunking.
Nope, as far I know (from first-hand experience in certain Indian cities and other Southeast Asian countires), chains are never used. Restraints are generally avoided because they tend to aggravate the patient even more or conversely subdue their psyche.
Anyway, even in the poorest facilities, old strong cloth material (not even rope) is used if really required. Obviously access to medically approved restraints is rare thing is the smaller places.

But again, I've never been to tribal areas or villages located in inaccessible areas, so I can't vouch for that.

Haven't seen Tere Naam but in the city shown in JNDSD (i.e. Ajmer) , it is really unlikely any qualified doctor would recommend restraints, forget chaining and sedation performed unsupervised by family members.

And yes, there are legal provisions for mentally ill patients. Look up the Indian Mental Health Act, 1987 (amendment 2013).
The latest version was recently passed by the Rajya Sabha and is extremely patient friendly. They have even introduced post-admission reviews and a lot of restrictions (almost ban) on ECT.

Hope this helps!

@everyone, thanks for your replies.
@BeatifulSoul_ Don't worry I wasn't just referring to your thread. Again I don't know how Indian law works, but actually in the UK Ravish could be sent to jail on more than one count, mainly false imprisonment.
Here our laws are mainly based on whether to the general public it seems someone did wrong, and if the victim thinks someone did wrong by them. It would not really matter what Ravish's intentions are, If the law doesn't give him the right to do something and he does it, then he would be guilty.

For example for someone to be guilty of false imprisonment they just have to keep someone locked in a room against the persons will. It wouldn't matter that Ravish was trying to protect Atharva. Even Sujata would be guilty of this as many times even she agreed to keep Atharva locked in a room against his will.
Chaining up someone would also fall under false imprisonment. Ravish doesn't have a legal right to restrain Atharva, so he would be guilty of that too, this could also fall under assault. In the UK there are strict rules, but the sentences they give are crap lol.

I guess maybe this is why we all see things differently, our laws are different. Me personally having studied law have struggled to really accept the actions taken against Atharva simply because it's not realistic to me and goes against the laws of the country where I live in. It has nothing to do with liking a character over another.

In terms of characters, obviously Ravish isn't trying to hurt Atharva, but he could use other restraints.
