CHAPTER 1
She entered a room which was almost pitch dark much to her surprise she did not need to call out for anyone. Had it been any other day she would have shouted her lungs out for stepping in to a room which was enveloped in so much darkness. Fear for darkness was something that creeped her out but today she liked darkness more than light. She hit against a couple of boxes as she walked through the room. After taking another couple of steps she slumped against the cold floor curling her legs together and cried her heart out. Everything was a lie. Her eyes kept watering no matter how much she tried. She wiped her unstoppable tears and laid her hands on the leather jacketed book she carried with her. She stood up in frustration when there was no light entering the room. She rushed out of the room hitting her leg once again and walked in to her room. She turned on the light and wondered was it even right to call it her room. Giving not much importance to those thoughts she sat on her bed and ran her long slender hands over the old leather jacket diary. Her hands shivered when she tried opening it for the first time. She placed a hand over her racing heart and opened the diary much calmly and her eyes fell on the first page. That handwriting so similar to hers and the ink had smudged here and there making it obvious that the person had indeed shed tears while writing it. That somewhat pinched her heart at the same time it even brought a tiny smile on her face.
To my dearest Khushi,
I am pretty sure I wouldn't be alive by the time you get your hands on this letter but by chance if I am alive I would have stood before you begging for forgiveness. When you were born you had a smile on your face that lit my heart and I still remember that smile. Khushi, please forgive your parents. My elder brother and his wife had fallen in love with you the minute they learned that your mother was pregnant. It was long since our family had celebrated and that's when you came like a blessing. In fact they pampered your mother more than I could. I was busy in my business world but every day I returned to a happy family and I could ask for nothing. Soon you were born and that was the happiest day of my life and it is still. Both myself and your mother cherished you like never before but like fate could have it my business partner or better my dear friend was going through a tough time. I couldn't leave him for anyone not even for you. My wife your mother loved me unconditionally and it was the same love that drew her to me. For once she knew you were safe and started worrying with me for my friend and his family. By then my brother and his wife could never conceive and their attachment towards you doubled. Then came a situation when I had to relocate and Shashi along with Garima couldn't see you getting separated from them. Even our heart's tore to see them pining for you when we told them about our decision of moving out. It was then we made up our mind and handed you over to Shashi and Garima. We did love you and felt broken when we took that decision but we couldn't see our brother and his wife suffering. We had relocated to Mumbai but could never forget you. We did not know how to ask you back. We could neither have another child cos the pain when we gave away you was more. I was also worried for your future. My brother was better off then and I wasn't sure if I could secure you with time. We were establishing everything from scratch and we friends even shared the same house. That was our situation then. I am not sure why am I writing this to you. But sooner or later the truth had to be told. Both I and your mother felt it would only be better if we said the truth rather than you hearing it from my brother or Garima or from anyone. Fate is very cruel my dear child and clearly when we returned back to get one glimpse of you we couldn't find you. It was then I learned that my brother and his family had moved from Delhi to Lucknow. Differences started arising between myself and your mother and it went to a point where we wanted to even end our life together but both of us felt you need to know the truth before we could end our life. Whenever you get this letter we will definitely not be able to see you forever but do me favor and visit this person in Delhi. He is my best friend cum well-wisher cum business partner. He would love to see you. I am not sure if it is still in my right to take this decision for you but somehow we managed to contact Shashi and Garima before we could see our last days. We requested them to get you married to my friend's son. A boy so charming, handsome, polite, successful. He is one boy that any father would want for his daughter. I have left their personal details behind this diary along with my will. We heard so much about you from Shashi and Garima and we are so proud of you. They have cherished you like a treasure and you have grown up in to their pride and it was you who made us smile after this many years. If you still have it in your big heart please try and forgive these sinners. I never wanted to ruin your life. The love for my friend and brother made me take this selfish decision. At any point don't inherit these traits of your parents. I do not know if you would even like us addressing as your parents but we are proud to say we gave birth to you.
With love,
Prem and Radika.
She read the letter not once twice but read so many times still she couldn't bring herself to face the truth. She was grateful to her parents and rightfully she meant Shashi and Garima. Not once did they let her feel lonely. They would have never said this truth had this been for the letter. She did not know if she was doing any right by ignoring the letter. Were they her parents? Her heart screamed No. Did they deserve her forgiveness? Her heart said NO a little louder. It was never her trait but for once she felt jealous. She did not accept them as her parents after reading their letter but felt jealous when her so called birth parents abandoned her for their friends and his family. She was alarmed at the last few sentences. What do they mean by get her married to? Did they not remember the fact that they were the ones who left her behind? What on earth gave them the permission to decide something as big as this? She felt enraged at them. She crushed the letter and threw it on the floor and brought her knees close to her chest and cried her heart out. She sobbed the rest of the night and fell asleep in a curled form on her bed.
In Delhi, Arnav Singh Raizada sat by the pool attached to his room. He could hear her shouting. He wanted to shut his ears tight and not face the reality. Why did life had to be so cruel? His parents passed away a couple of years back leaving them in debts. That created a huge trauma in his sister's life. She was to be married in a month's time but the accident had affected her mentally. Every night she shouted craving for her parents. The nights were terribly painful. She was perfectly fine in fact she was the hovering sister and worrying about him during the day. What went wrong in her life was something he couldn't clearly pinpoint. To top it all there was this parent's last wish. Settling in a blissful married life was the last thing in his mind but he had to look out for her. Why things have to be so difficult? He cursed his fate and decided that he would put Aman in charge. His primary duty would be to look out for the girl. What was her name he thought? He owed this much to his dad and his dear uncle. With that he shut the laptop in hand and called it for the night hoping his sister would calm down.
Mornings have never been this gloomy at the Guptas but today was one such day. Shashi and Garima waited fervently for their daughter to open the room door. It was extremely unusual of her to sleep this late but they knew she wasn't herself since the truth was out. Both of them felt bad for hurting their gem of a daughter but they owed at least this much to Khushi's parents. Had it not been for their generosity they would have been dead. They were even willing to let khushi meet them but they had clearly downplayed it saying they wouldn't be able to stand before her after letting her down when they were supposed to take her along and treasure her. It was for that one reason why Shashi and Garima decided that they would get in touch with whomever her parents have chosen for her and also trusted their decision. A nervous Garima lost all her patience and gently knocked the room door. Upon hearing no response she slowly twisted the door knob and found her daughter curled up in bed. Even from far she could see her daughter's body was shaking. Her motherly instincts ripped her heart. She quickly ran near her daughter and gently stroked her hair blowing kisses in hair. Soon Shashi followed suit and knelt on the floor trying to wake his daughter up. Soon the trio lost their resistance to hide their emotions and hugged together like their life depended on it. Shashi soon stabilized himself and tried cheering up Khushi and looked at Garima and asked her to stand strong for Khushi. In between her sobs Khushi spoke "Why are you both not my parents? Why are they making it so difficult for me?" and cried harder.
"We wanted an angel in our life beta. We did not want to go looking for someone when we had our angel right before us then. Prem and Radika loved you dearly but they had to take that hard decision. You are like Krishna himself. He was born to one but he was more loved by the parents who brought him up. You are him to us Khushi. Our days used to start with you and end with you. We couldn't bring ourselves to see you moving away with your parents. Had it been the other way I would have not hesitated to kidnap you my mad child" said Garima wiping her tears trying to cheer her daughter up.
"Of course Garima. I would have fought with my brother to have khushi by my side. We are your parents Khushi. I know how much this decision broke my brother and his wife. He wasn't someone who would part his things. He was a possessive man and for once our love won over his possessiveness. He never wrote to me because we wanted to be your parents. Even now it was their last letter that shook me up. I owe him you khushi. I owe his generosity. When I was losing your mother, both Prem and Radika helped me revive her through you. Never say that khushi. We are your parents and you are our only daughter. We have all played with your life khushi but trust us for once. Please help me make his last wish come true" spoke Shashi kissing Khushi's forehead.
She saw her parents intently. They had not asked her anything so far. She was in love with someone. They did not ask this for their sake it was for something they felt they were indebted to. She sighed and thought to herself "How easy was it for people to take decisions for you? Once they abandoned you for their friend and today your parents want to decide your future. Hey Devi Maiyaa, you have given me everything I have asked for. I am going to do this for my parents please stand by me and protect me like every time" and she closed her eyes. After a couple of minutes a broken khushi asked them to proceed further and smiled at them sadly before her parents could walk out of her room.
