Almost 5 years later, Khushi put the finishing touches to her make-up, smoothed her vibrant hair into place and stood back to get the full effect of her shimmering red sari.
Within an hour, everybody who was anybody in Delhi would be arriving at the Raizada Mansion, because Arnav Singh Raizada was throwing what was being described as the party of the year. Why? Because he had successfully launched a new line under Khushi's name which was specially designed by her. She had had the support of a wonderful fashion team headed by Anjali Verma, who had had to work long and hard to achieve that successful result.
No longer haunted by painful bitter memories, Anjali was at last managing to leave the past behind her. She had regained the easy confidence and friendliness that had once been part of her personality. Her happiness had contributed most to that process. Anjali and Aman had recently celebrated their second wedding anniversary. Anjali was now the mother of a little boy of 6 months, a development that had surprised and delighted the woman, who had assumed that it was not possible for her to get pregnant again. NK had come from Australia as he was managing AR designs based in Sydney. Akash and Payal were back with their son Piyush and happily enjoying all the fun they missed in America. Nani was still the head of the family but still managed to win the hearts of the youth. Mami was again complaining to mamaji that the make-up kit was not good and will have to buy some more.
Khushi had completed her pageant duties while she was expecting their daughter and later on joined AR Designs as Arnav had asked earlier. Khushi put on her jewellery, a recent birthday present from Arnav. The contemporary diamond pendant glittered with white-fire brilliance at her throat and the earrings caught the light with every movement. She went to say goodnight to Arushi, with Lakshmi, padding fluidly in her wake.
Arushi was still awake and complaining about Aarav who was 5 years elder to her. In truth, Aarav and Arushi frequently fought like cat and dog. Aarav liked to lay down the law and Arushi couldn't stand being told what to do. Piyush was always the peacemaker since he was back from America. Soon, Khushi reflected dreamily, resting her hand against the very slight curve of her tummy, there would be another child in the group. She was looking forward to telling Arnav her good news.
Lethally tall, dark and handsome in a dinner jacket, Arnav joined Khushi in the gallery at the top of the stairs. 'I love the sari. Red is your colour. Is Arushi asleep?'
"Yes, don't disturb her," Khushi advised. "She'll only start muttering about Aarav again. They're double act from hell. Arushi's cheeky to him, he winds her up, she loses the plot and he laughs."
Arnav tugged her into the shadows. "Isn't that the way you are with me?" Assailed by teasing dark brown eyes, Khushi laughed. "Only when I first knew you. I've grown up quite a bit since then-"Arnav quickly stopped her, "so you're not the woman who slammed down the phone on me last week when I couldn't get home in time for dinner?". Khushi went red with embarrassment and squirmed. "Well, obviously that was an exception and I was in the wrong-".
"Oh, you can slam the phone down on me anytime you like. I'm tough as granite," Arnav husked, one hand splaying to her hip to curve her into connection with his long powerful thighs. "And you said sorry very nicely in bed that night". Her guilty blush hit her hairline.
Arnav stared down at her with appreciative eyes. "I love you, Khushi Kumari Gupta Singh Raizada. You, Aarav and Arushi are the sunshine in '"
"And you're going to have to share that sunshine in the near future," Khushi told him playfully, wanting to make her announcement before joining their guests for the evening. Arnav thought and said, "You mean Lakshmi, the most spoilt goat in India, is finally getting a mate?"
Khushi giggled like a drain. "No, I'm pregnant!"
Warm satisfaction burnished his brilliant smile. "You are an amazing woman."
"I'm glad you think so." Khushi locked her arms around his neck. Eventually they emerged from the shadows and she was lamenting that she would have to renew her lipstick. But she was laughing and he was watching her every lively change of expression with the intensity of a man very much in love. It was a while before they joined their guests...
