OS- Forever and Beyond

She watched silently as the pebble bobbed into the water and the ripples slowly formed, a process that seemed to soothe her mind and remind her of a few things that she had left behind, things that had changed who she was.

'You're never seeing him again, this is what we get for all that we have ever done' her mothers voice sounded angrily in the quiet room.

'But..I l..love him Maa' she whispered and looked down, unable to hold back the tears.

A sharp pain shot through her left cheek as her mothers palm striked her painfully, wounding her in many ways than one.

'Don't ever take his name again, you are my daughter and I decide what is right for you' her mother spoke harshly, the loving eyes now holding nothing but anger and hate.

Khushi remembered that day, it was still painfully alive in her mind, it was the day she had last seen him, the day they had shared their first kiss and the day she was forcefully dragged away from him, her only love, the only person she would ever love.

She was only eighteen then, voiceless and helpless when her world toppled down, her tiny dream land shattered and fell to her feet. They made her go away from him, sent her away and she could do nothing about it but spend her nights sobbing into her pillow, trying to drive away the pain of being away from someone so precious, so close to her, it was painful how the family she loved, the people she adored suddenly seemed to forget that she needed him, her sobs did not end throughout the night and the pain always breached its way through her, no one seemed to understand, they all expected her to forget him and move on with life.

Khushi hugged her sweater close and observed the still lake with moist eyes as she remembered the last time she had seen him.

'Arnav' she said happily, her legs dangling in the water, her smile widening as she watched him coming towards her, his brown eyes sparkling with happiness, clad in his worn out jeans and sneakers, his tousled hair making her want to run her hands through it.

He plopped down next to her and slung his arm around her shoulders, 'What day is it Arnav?' she asked quietly, 'Monday' he said nonchalantly and shrugged as he threw a pebble into the lake and watched the ripples, 'Yeah but what day is it?!' she asked urgently, her patience slowly wearing away, 'Arrey its the 18 of October Khushi' , 'Gosh Khushi, what now' she heard him ask as she glared at him and got up, wanting to just walk away and give him a piece of her mind when she was a little less angry.

She tugged her wrist away from his hand and pushed it away, she glared at him and turned to go when suddenly she found herself being pulled back towards him, his hands were firmly around her waist as she tried to move away, ' Happy Birthday princess' she heard him whisper quietly into her ears, his breath fanning across her cheeks as she smiled at how stupid she was to think that he would forget, she turned her head slightly to smile at him as he smirked at her and pulled out something from his pocket 'Just like every year' he said softly and gently slid the glass bangles down her wrist, 'They are red this time' he whispered and kissed her cheek.

Khushi sighed and leaned against him, she was spending her birthday with him like every year since that day when she was eight and he had come running to her holding yellow glass bangles that her mother had refused to buy, from that day he was her best friend, someone who had grown so close to her that she could not imagine a single day without telling him everything and laughing with him over the silliest things, he had glued himself to her life and heart by just being himself and telling her that she meant the world to him through the simplest gestures.

She closed her eyes and sent a silent prayer to always keep him happy, always keep them together, she opened her eyes to find Arnav standing before her with a silly gentle smile on his face, those brown eyes boring silently into hers, her heart skipped a beat as she watched him hold up roses for her, her favorites. He slowly lifted her hand and smiled at her warmly and looked into her eyes as he uttered those words that she had dreamed of every night, those words that were surprisingly unsaid between them, those three words which set her heart racing at lightnig speed, threatening to make her stop breathing 'I love you Princess' he whispered softly as his lips lifted in the tenderest smile, Khushi stood frozen, her eyes suddenly brimming with tears, her heart beating erratically, she buried her head in his chest and laughed, the tears spilling over endlessly 'What took you so long silly?' she said quietly and sniffed as she ruffled his hair playfully.

He cupped her cheeks and looked into her eyes again as he said 'I want you to know that I meant every thing I said, I love you' he said and smiled 'You and me forever' he whispered as she nodded happily 'Forever and beyond' she said softly as his lips descended upon hers and showered her with the gentlest kisses as his mouth moved slowly upon hers, making her heart beat thunderously, making her close her eyes and vanish in a toe curling kiss.

Khushi wiped away the tears and stared at the still lake that still remained the same after five long years, she had changed, nothing was the same but her love for him still remained resembling the quiet lake that continued to exist even when drastic changes happened elsewhere.

She was back, the same place, the same day, the only difference was he was not by her side and she had no clue where to find him, where to search, she was kept away for a long time, fooled into thinking that it would pass, it took her five years to realize that no matter how long, how far, till her last breath he would always remain, like a tiny flicker of light that never fades away.

She turned around as the winter winds blew across her, sending shivers down her spine as she pulled her sweater closer for warmth, she watched the same trees, the same old broken bench and the tiny flowers that popped up every winter. Khushi stilled and stopped walking away when she heard a footsteps behind her.

She heard leaves rustling, the place suddenly seeming warmer and known as she closed her eyes and tried to recognize the sudden change.
She stood frozen as she found warm arms wrapping around her in a familiar way, drawing her close, 'Happy Birthday Princess' she heard the same whisper, the voice that repeated in her head a million times, the warmth that was suddenly snatched away from her was back, she turned around with wide hopeful eyes shining with tears to find him right there, right next to her.

'Five years Khushi, what took you so long' she heard him say as she quietly observed the stubbled cheek and neat hair, she held back a sob and smiled tearily as he slipped red bangles down her wrist, 'Every year I waited and grew tired with every passing moment without you...an.and here you are again' he said in a broken voice, tears slowly slipping down his cheeks, as he leaned his forehead against hers and cried, they cried for the moments that they had been apart and joyously embraced the tiny flicker of hope that had suddenly brightened, bringing back the love that was suddenly snatched away. 'I love you so much princess' he whispered and kissed her, stealing away her breath as he lifted her off the ground and hugged her close, his mouth fusing with hers passionately. 'You and me forever' she whispered and closed her eyes, trying to slow down her rapid breathing 'Forever and beyond' he said and buried his head in her hair. They were together, two hearts that needed each other, love that many others failed to understand was still burning alive bringing back the warmth during that cold winters morning.
