Thank you for your note!
I have spent my whole life assiduously avoiding watching any Indian drama serial. Whether it was my mother, my father, my sister, my extended family or friends i actually had to physically leave the room when one was on, just to get away from all the saas bahu drama. I understand that there is a huge market for such shows, and perhaps being British born i don't quite have the emotional connection to such situations, but i hate that kind of thing. So, i never gave any Indian serial a chance as i assumed they just weren't made with me in mind.
However last December i was literally forced to stay in the same room with extended family as EVERYONE else (in their teens, 30's, 40's and 60) watched something called Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon. They went through 2 recorded episodes. By the end of the 2nd episode i was mildly surprised at the lack of friction between any saas's or bahu's and quite interested in the friction between the female lead and the male lead and how well it was written and acted out. I started to ask questions about what was going on, who was in love with or hated who, what was the premise.
Having to watch another episode the next day with the same family members i found that i enjoyed the fact that both the main characters seemed to have quite loving and normal families, behaving similarly to mine here and in india, and that i could actually relate to a lot of what was happening on screen. It seemed real and actually the characters seemed like real people. And i could finally understand why my family members were getting emotional about someone called Khushiji!
I went home eager to figure out if this was a fluke or if other episodes held up to this standard and watched back all the shows of the week before. Still impressed. So i went back another week, then another, then another, then another until i hit mid November and realised i should probably start from the beginning. By this point of course i dont just love the show, i also love Khushi and Arnav. I love the writing, i love the dialogues, i love the language, i love that it reminds me of the India i see when i visit, i love the actors, i love the situations, i love the rabba ve's, i love the fighting, i love the romance, i love the similarities and the differences between the leads, i love the little touches and idiosyncracies of each character, i even love that Khushi's dupatta has a role to play.
It feels modern and yet timeless and has a classiness and charm that cannot be matched by anything i have seen before or since on tv (and i watch a lot of tv) I am hugely impressed. I have loved shows before and loved characters but never have i been obsessed in this way. I think you and your team are absolutely amazing. Whoever conceived Khushi's and Arnav's characters did a wonderful job and obviously spent a lot of time and effort creating them. They are multi layered, they are well rounded, they are interesting, they are intriguing, they draw you in emotionally and are easy not just to love but to forgive. So i just wanted to say thank you, and to tell you that you are doing a fabulous job. This show is your baby and you made me fall in love with it, so i will always trust that whatever you're doing is what is best for it.
I am still unable to watch any other Indian television serial. I tried, after loving IPKKND so much i thought perhaps i've been missing out all these years and so gave the others a try. But my previous views still seem to hold about every other show out there, they are unwatchable for me. Except yours. You have created something unique and obviously know what you are doing.
