The characters r mostly what we are familiar with, but in a fairytale context..But ahem..not in this part but in the latter parts reader discretion would be needed cz it isn't exactly gonna be an innocent child's fairytale!
Once upon a time in a faraway kingdom an old kind lived and he had 3 ambitious sons who were all in their 20s and the father the King, nearing his time and seeing how the wind was blowing, sought a way to keep his sons from warring and breaking the Queen's heart. He had divided the country into three principalities to prevent civil war. Ever since, petty rivalries had riddled the three countries, but full scale war had never seemed a viable option when their 'would be' enemies were cousins.
3 generations later,
In Kingdom Sunshine,
The old king Sashi was on his throne and thinking about the future of his kingdom and his thoughts invariantly shifted towards his two beautiful daughters. He thought of his sweet elder daughter Payal and a soft smile lighted up his face fondly recalling her soothing presence, but as soon as his mind shifted to his youngest child he grimaced. Khushi, he sighed' if ever she learned what it was expected of a young lady instead of the little minx who courted mischief every second of her life. She was the reason he didn't have a son to pass on the power to as the queen had died giving birth to the little princess and despite trying his best King Sashi couldn't help but feel resentment towards his younger daughter.
And at the same time in the North tower of the castle, bed covers shuffled and a alabaster smooth limb stretched out from under the blue and silvery quilt and Princess Khushi slowly pushed herself up into a sitting position, her ebony locks tumbling around her flushed oval shaped face with sleep filled almond shaped eyes which appeared to be a soft green in the morning light. Thick dark lashes fanned her fawn eyes and she had a rosy bee-stung pout as she stared at her jiji who was opening the blinders and letting the sunlight pour in to the room. She has the appearance of an innocent angel, ethereal, delicate. Yet, her green eyes with flecks of gold evinced a sensual appeal.
Payal stared at the little sister whom she loved like a child from the day she was born. But as her father had confided in her she knew of the unwanted desires Khushi's fragile beauty inspired in the hearts of the hardened warriors surrounding her. And the worst was Khushi never listened to a word of caution and did exactly what was in her heart never thinking of the consequences of her actions. She wandered alone, and not just only inside the castle there had been enough times she had taken off on her mare's back and spent the day prowling the dense forests marking the Southern boundary towards the adjoining kingdom.
In short Khushi hated authority and often declared to everyone's dismay that she will never marry and let a man control her life, and that her father was enough already and she had no intension of giving anyone else that power over her!
'Kya jiji do u have to wake me up so early every single day?' asked a husky sleep filled voice. Payal walked towards her and sat on the bed beside her and ruffling her hair asked her, 'Don't u remember? Today is the day the Prince from the Southern Kingdom comes to visit!'
Khushi smiled an impish smile and winked at her jiji who blushed and asked 'aha' seems like someone is anxious to see their future husband!'
'Khushi!' said a scandalized Payal, 'a princess never should say things like that!'
'But jiji it is true isn't it?' asked Khushi
'Khushi how u got to know about these things I'll never know! I was alone with papa when he talked about his wishes!'
'Oh jiji, u might have forgotten about the little passage behind the throne room we used to play in, but I haven't' replied a giggling Khushi.
'Get ready and come down soon ok?' asked Payal as she shook her head at the impossibility to refine her baby sister and left the room. Just then a maid walked in to the room carrying Khushi's dress and Khushi, all her laziness gone as she thought of the exiting day ahead finished her morning routine and sat by the dressing table as the maid braided her hair in to a lovely design and placed a halo of white rose buds around her crown of her hair.
Soon Khushi was dressed in a foamy pale green gown with a wispy overlay sprinkled with crystals. The simple gown hugged around her slender body and hips and floated to the tips of her matching slippers. Matching ribbons were twirled through her soft hair caught up in tiny plaits circling her head.
And she raced down the narrow stone steps of her tower to the bottom floor. Custom dictated that the sisters share the upper tower chamber, and Payal had already gone down to the lower chamber of the tower.
And then the two of the quickly walked towards the secret passageway leading towards the throne room that Khushi had mentioned, and they peaked in to see their father greeting the visiting Prince and his small entourage.
They couldn't see the face of the prince as he was facing away from where they were hiding and soon they were led away to their respective rooms. And Payal was soon summoned by their father while Khushi walked back aimlessly around the castle corridors until a new idea struck her. That was the realization that there was another passageway that led near the rooms allocated to the new prince and Khushi gave a loud squeal in delight only to earn a glare from the old witch her father had decided to employ to tame her, as he said! And as she was again under scrutiny her free time was over and she decided to wait until jiji came back so she would be allowed to go away free again.
A while later Payal returned and Khushi pulled her leg loudly wondering about the handsomeness of the prince and the wild tales they have heard about him until Payal was a nervous wreck. Then Khushi pulled out her master plan to see the young prince when he didn't know! Had it been any other time Payal would have dissuaded Khushi from her harebrained schemes, but as it was she was also desperate due to a complete different reason even Khushi didn't know of. Princess Payal was already in love, she had met Prince Akash 2 years back when she had turned 21 and a royal ball was held by her father and she was desperate to know the identity of the prince her father expected her to be betrothed to. She was hoping against hope that it was Prince Akash as he was the crown prince from the Southern Kingdom.
Slowly the two princesses dodged their maids and the guards and snuck in to the secret passageway and finally they were near the room of the mysterious prince. It was Khushi who was peeping from the small crack on the wall when the prince came in to view and her breath caught in her throat and she sighed dreamily. He was so handsome, so tall and he looked so strong and just like the prince charming from the books she read. Khushi had watched in awe, twinges of heat thrumming through her body at the sight of all that bronze masculinity and an unexplainable emotion took hold of Khushi's heart as she realized she was looking at her future brother in law. Payal jiji was 23 now and 6 years older than Khushi, and of an age their father decreed she was to be married.
Payal impatiently tapped Khushi on the shoulder asking her to move and Khushi dragged her eyes off the most glorious sight she had ever seen and allowed Payal to take a look.
Payal strained her eyes in the candlelight and her face lost colour as her gaze finally fell on the face of her intended, he wasn't prince Akash she realized with a sinking heart. It was Prince Arnav, the second son of the Southern king. Then Payal realized why her father was expecting this match to work out. As a second son Prince Arnav would be free from official responsibility from his own kingdom and thus would be able to take over the Sunshine kingdom once he was married to her unlike Prince Akash who had his own kingdom and responsibilities.
"Dear Lord," Payal finally muttered trying to cover her heartache. Not realizing her sister's state of mind Khushi slapped her hand across her mouth to catch her usual bout of giggles which overcame her temporary weird feelings.
And soon the two princesses abandoned their watch duty and returned to their sleeping chambers.
