"Khushi jaldi karo. Kitna time lagati ho tayyar hone mein. Maine kaha thana tayyar hoke rehna?" arnav was ready and sitting on his armchair waiting for his wife to step out of the bathroom.

"Aapko pata hai na hum kis liye party jaa rahe hai?" She called out from the bathroom

"Kya matlab?" He replied irritably

"Valentines day. Matlab pyar karne walo ka din. Aur hume leker jarahe hai valentines party pe per itna ukhda ukhda baat karke. Theek kehti hai Di. Bilkul papad ka tukda!"

"KHUSHi tumhari bakwaas khat..." He stopped mid sentence as he looked up to his wife. She looked absolutely stunning in her black and red net sari. Her blouse was an elegant sleeveless blouse with a square cutback. Her hair was up in an elegant French bun showing off her swanlike neck. He watched her mesmerised like he had seen for the first time. She looked every part an elegant Mrs.Arnav Singh Raizada.

"Kya? Theek nahi hai na? Mujhe pata tha. Oh ab kya pehnu?" She walked over to the wardrobe fumbling her clothes looking for something else to wear. Khushi sounded flustered, she knew he would start yelling at her again if she took longer to get ready. She stilled as she felt a breath tickle her neck. "You look perfect. As always. Infact, if we don't get out of here now, we may never get to the party. So chalen?"

Akash wolf whistled as Khushi and Arnav walked down the stairs. "Arre vah Khushi, aap ne to aaj kamaal kardiya, bohut sundar lag rahi hai aap." Khushi giggled and blushed. "Waise bhai, technically Khushi meri saali hai, adhi ghar wali."

"Haan Akash. Aur technically Bhabhi bhi hai. Aur I think its best if you started calling her Bhabhi." He patted his brother on the back and smiled at Payal.

"Di you are sure you don't want to come?" Arnav asked Anjali who was busy discussing something with Nani, she looked up and smiled "No Chotey, you guys go...I have to do some puja preparations. Have fun."

***

"Juice?" Arnav handed his wife and sister-in-law a glass of juice. "Aur apka drink?" Payal questioned as she took the glass from him. "Aakash laa raha hai." Arnav stood by the cocktail table next to Khushi who sat on a bar stool an arm's length from him lost in the views from the elegant rooftop bar.

"Bhai, your gin and tonic." Akash handed him a glass and turned to Payal motioning her towards the dancefloor.

Arnav watched his wife for a while before he walked behind her and put his arms around her waist resting his head on her shoulder. "Penny for your thoughts?"

"I am thinking, this time last year aap hume mandir le ja rahe the. Kitna ajeeb hai na sub kuch?" She placed her hand over his and caressed his hand gently.

They were both lost in their own thoughts for a while when they were interrupted by one of Arnav's business acquaintances.

"Mr. Raizada your lovely wife?"

"Yes Mr. Mathur, Khushi. My very lovely wife." She put her hand out to the young gentleman who instead of shaking it turned it over and bent down to kiss her hand. "Enchante"

Arnav laughed and teased the young man about turning on his charm. He put his arm around Khushi affectionately and the three had a fun conversation. The music changed to a soft ballad.

"would you care for a dance Mrs. Raizada?"

"Oh? I suppose yes." He smiled warmly at her and led her by the elbow to the dance floor winking at the man they left at the table.

He wrapped his right arm around her waist and pulled her closer. He swayed softly and then leaned in to whisper into her ears. "I bet he is jealous!"

"What nonsense. Why would he be?" She pulled her head back slightly looking into his eyes.

"Oh he is the jealous type you know."

She smiled "And you would know?"

"I have known him for many years now."

"And why would he be jealous of you?"

"Of me? Not of me darling. Of you."

"What?"

"Marvin Mathur is gay. He has had a crush on me ever since I have known him. So as you dance with your arms all over me he is sitting there looking at you wishing away." Arnav leaned in and kissed his wife just behind her ear. She giggled and sent a look towards Mr. Mathur and held her husband just that extra little bit closer.

As the music changed to a faster beat Arnav lead Khushi off the floor and checked his blackberry. "Looks like Payal and Akash already left. Probably wanted to have their own little celebration. What say we do the same?"

"Aap bhi na. Chaliye ghar."

She stepped into the bedroom and made to change into her pyjamas. She spotted white box on the bed tied up in an oversized red ribbon. She picked up the small card attached to the ribbon and turned it over,

"Happy Anniversary Khushi,

Will you be my Valentine Always and Forever? If your answer is yes, wear this and meet me on the terrace.

Yours Lovingly, Arnav."

She unravelled the ribbon and opened the box to reveal a most exquisite bridal lehenga along with all the bridal jewellery. A lone tear made its way down her cheek as she held the lehenga to her heart.

She put the lehenga on and sat at the her dressing table and slipped all the jewellery and finally the bangles her mother-in-law had left for her. She lifted her skirt and walked through the French doors and up the stairs, feeling every bit as giddy as a bride-to-be.

What waited for her on the terrace was a scene she could have never imagined. The terrace was twinkling with candles, fairy lights and flowers. The sweet scent of jasmine and tuber rose hung in the air. At the centre was a stunning mandap of antique gold and red roses. Her whole family stood around the mandap. Arnav was waiting for her at the mandap seated next to the panditji. Her jaw dropped momentarily to see her husband wearing a Sherwani, a cream and gold sherwani complete with a sehra on his head.

Payal and Anjali stepped forward and held her by the waist and her arms and walked her slowly to the mandap. Buaji embraced her "hai re Nandkishore, itni pyari dulhan shayad kisi ne na dekha ho."

Just as she was about to step onto the mandap with the help of Anjali and Payal, "Wait," Arnav called out. He got up and walked down to her "I went about this completely wrong the first time round. I believe I owe you a proposal." He smiled at his beautiful bride and got down on one knee. "Khushi, will you be my wife – not for convenience, not for saving anyone, not for society but just for us. Will you be my wife because you WANT to spend the rest of your life with your Laad Governor"

Khushi now had tears of joy flowing freely down her cheek. "Haan. Sau baar Haan." She replied with complete resignation. He slipped a beautiful ring on her finger. A 2 carat brilliant cut diamond set in a classic tiffany setting. He then stood and held his hand out for her and they walked to the mandap together.

"Khushi bitiya, tumhari bauji ne to tumhari kanyadaan karne ka mauka nahi mila tha, toh Arnav bitwa ne ee sab intezaam kiya." Khushi squeezed her husbands hand in gratitude. Nani handed them both garlands and they went through all the wedding rituals. Sashi Gupta gave his daughter away. He still couldn't speak but held Khushi's hand and placed it into Arnavs' who promised him to honour, cherish and love Khushi through this life and for eternity. Akash stood in as Khushi's brother and handed her the puffed wheat to throw into the sacred fire. Arnav held her hand as they walked around the agni, sanctifying their marriage in front of the fire-god. They took the seven sacred steps that bound them as man and wife. Finally Mamiji helped Arnav as he gave Khushi the sringar of a wife – her mangalsutr and sindhoor.

She was welcomed into her own home all over again as a bride. This time without the looks of shock, horror and a million questions. This time she stepped in with a new confidence. With every hope of a beautiful future – a future she had already started experiences, but was thrilled to officiate.

Once everyone else had retired to their rooms, the Guptas staying over in the guest quarters at the insistence of the Raizada' boys, Arnav picked Khushi up bridal style and started walking towards the bedroom. She squealed in protest "Yeh aap kya kar rahe hai?"

"I believe its called, carrying my bride over the threshold!" He leaned in and touched her forehead and kept walking.

"Waise aap sherwani mein kaafi ache lagte ho!" she teased him and he chuckled as they reached their bedroom.

"Hai Devi Maiyya!"

"Devii Maiyya? Mehnat mein karu, aur tareef Devi Maiyya ki? Unbeleivable"

"Arnav!" she swatted him. "Yeh sab, kab, mein to yahi pe tayyar.."

"Weddings take long enough. Aur humari indian weddings take a little longer…toh time plenty thi."

He put her down on the centre of the bed and walked back to latch his door. The room had been transformed into a bridal chamber. The bed was bedecked with strings of tuberose and red roses. Candles flickered from every corner of the room. She edged back to the center of the bed and drew her knees up, watching in wander.

He turned around from the door and paused awhile, taking in the sight of his wife as a bride. Last time things had been so different. Tonight he would make it up to her. Every girl he knew had a dream of what their wedding night would be. He had denied her that but would make it up to her. She deserved that and so much more. He walked up to her and sat facing her, taking her hands in his.

"I think I owe you a suhag raat Mrs. Raizada."

She pulled him closer by the lapels of the sherwani and sealed his lips "You talk too much Mr. Raizada."

"Touche!" atleast he wouldn't have to deal with the nuances of a blushing bride in bed he chuckled as he slipped his tongue into her mouth and she pushed him back against the pillow.
