To make an avatar, you'll have to use Photoshop! Visit the helpdesk in the Avatar and Signature forum, it'll help you! I do know how to make them, but I don't know how to explain :)

pm means private messenger if u wnt to gv msg to any 1 u can use pm to gv msg to tht person
tht buddy button means tht if u wnt add any member to ur buddy list thn u can send buddy reqst to tht member through da buddy option
