AhI there she is. I can't get rid of the image of her inside my closet.
'Tumne toh kaha tha ki Lucknow chali jaogi?' I am so relieved she didn't go.
'Phi yahan wapas kyon aayi?' I am inexplicably glad to see her!
There, she tries to run away again, but this time I want an answer. I caught hold of her hand, urging her to face me. As much as I hated her, I couldn't help but stare into those eyes, those brown pools of emotion. She looked at me silently, a little lost in the moment till she recovered, her eyes imploring me to let her go.
'Aap badtameezee kar rahe hain'. The retort sprung to my mouth, 'Kyunki badtameezee ke alawa aur koi bhasha tumhe samajh mein nahi aati hai. Main tumse kuchh pooch raha hoon... tumne toh kaha tha ki lucknow chali jaogi? Wapas lautkar nahin aaogi, phir yahan kya kar rahi ho?' Anything to make her talk to me, just why, I do not know.
Dare I hope that something remotely related to me dissuaded her from leaving the city? What am I thinking?
'Majboori thi, tab bhi aur ab bhi. Aap hamara haath chhodiye varna...' She was back in her usual element now.
'Varna...varna kya kar logi tum'. I was enjoying both her presence and her discomfiture.
'Aap Arnav Singh Raizada honge aapke ghar mein'. Yes girl, this is my house by the way. 'Mera hi ghar hai...' I smirked.
She looked flustered for a few seconds and then replied 'Hum jante hain ki yeh apka hi ghar hai lekin agar humne paise nahi kharch kiye hote na aur woh manager sahab hume pehele hi bata dete na toh... toh hum mar jaate lekin aap jaise logon ke ghar kabhi nahin aate.'
That was cruel girl, don't you remember... 'Pehle bhi tum hum jaise hi logo ke yahan kaam karti thi aur waise bhi tum jaise log to paison ke liye...' I knew I had hurt her again from the emotions that flickered in her eyes, but she started it.
I heard a voice 'ASR'. Lavanya, I groaned inwardly, didn't that girl have better timing?
I saw the panic in Khushi's eyes, she glanced at my grip on her hand and quietly begged me to let her go again. I dropped her hand and stood silently, watching her reaction as Lavanya hugged me. She seemed determined to not look at us.
'Chamkili tum yahan kya kar rahi ho?' She looked at me for an answer and then at Lavanya as if to say, Ask your boyfriend here.
She turned to walk away, but her anklet (which seemed to have a mind of its own like her dupattas) which had come undone, fell on the ground, with a slight tinkle. She ran away, while Lavanya still hugged me at the waist. I turned to watch her walk away again from me.
'ASR chamkili yahan kya kar rahi thi?'
'Forget it.' Even if I knew I wouldn't be telling you Lavanya. I looked at the anklet, she'd left something behind again.
'Exactly, forget it, kyunki is waqt spotlight kisi pe nahin, mujhpe honi chahiye. Aur waise bhi surprise ka time ho chuka hai. Chalein...'
I looked at the anklet again, making a mental note to come back for it later alone. Why, I didn't know. I just knew I wanted to keep it close and safe.
