Chapter 3

Dev had come to meet one of his business associates at a hotel. As the hotel lobby was too crowded, they had gone up to his associate's hotel room on the 25^th floor to go through some figures on their laptops. He had just bid the associate good bye and was waiting for the elevator to arrive.

The elevator doors chimed open. Another person was already in the elevator.

"B...B...Bro!" PP stammered out.

Dev clenched his jaw and stepped into the elevator.

PP backed all the way into the other corner of the elevator.

They passed a few floors in silence.

"Two, two Karor rupees liyay Indrani nay Chandni ko mujhay bechany key liyay. Tum nay kitnay paisay diyay. Muft mein to Indrani Chandni ko kabhi tumharay saath jaanay na deti.

Dev stood there shocked. He was sure PP was telling him the truth as he had no reason to lie about this and as a child Chandni had often confided into him that she didn't think her step mother loved her.

"Waisay mein abhi bhi Chandni mein interested hoon. Agar kabhi tumhara dil bhar jaayay toh mein ab bhi us kay liyay tumhein two karor rupees day sakta hoon.

Dev saw red. He pressed the button to put the elevator on hold. The alarm started ringing. According to the display, they were on the 8^th floor now.

PP saw the rage on his face and pressed himself further into his corner.

"Two, two karor rupees mein tumhein day sakta hoon agar tum abhi kuch kiyay bina yahan say chalay jaao. PP tried to bribe Dev to leave him alone.

Dev put his laptop bag down and advanced towards PP. PP had started to sweat.

Dev punched PP a few times and then threw him across the elevator to the other side.

"Bro is mein meri kya ghlati hai. Mein nay toh woh hi kaha jo such hai. Indrani nay Chandni ko mujhay becha Dev followed him to the other side of the elevator while PP tried to crawl away.

Dev started punching him again until PP passed out.

Dev straightened his tie, grabbed his laptop bag and pressed the button to start the elevator again. He rushed out once the elevator arrived on the ground floor drove like mad to his house.

"Indrani nay Chandni ko mujhay becha kept echoing in his mind.

Murli met him in the hallway.

"Bhayya aap khanay mein kya...

"Not now, Dev cut him off and continued to his room.

Dev liked to play sudoku when he was troubled. The math puzzle would help him organize his thoughts and calm down. Today, even that was not helping him. Their childhood was marred with incidents of Chandni confiding to him about how little Indrani cared for her.

Dev was in their secret hiding place waiting for Chandu to come. She was very late. He heard someone approaching behind him.

"Miss badbad, aaj itni late kyun. He had turned around with a smile but stopped short at her tear stricken face.

"Kya hua.

Chandu rushed towards him and hugged him. He returned the hug while patting her back.

"Dev, maa, maa mujh say pyaar nahin karti. Woh Meghu or Shikha ko melay mein lay kar gayi hai. Woh kehti hai keh teen bacchay sambhalna mushkil hota hai. Pehaly hamesha mama ji har sal hum teenon ko melay mein ley kar jaatay thay. Lekin aaj maan nay kaha keh mein sub say badi hoo aur kayi baar melay mein ja chuki hoon is liyay mujhay ghar rehna chahiyay. Lekin mujhay pata hai woh mujhay is liyay nahin ley kar gayi kyun kein mein sauteli hoon aur woh mujh say pyar nahin karti.

At the tender age of fourteen, he hadn't known what words to offer her as a comfort so had just hugged her and told her that he would be there for her no matter what.

He had always known Indrani hadn't loved Chandni when she was young. However, when he saw Indrani doting on the adult Chandni while he lived with them and Chandni willing to do anything for Indrani, he had thought they had overcome their differences and had a good relationship now.

Did Chandni know that Indrani still hated her, he wondered. No, he didn't think so. Not when he remembered her lying to her mother about what was happening in her moun dikhai so Indrani's feelings wouldn't get hurt.

He still hated her for what she did to his family. He couldn't deny the strange pull he had started feeling towards the adult Chandni since she was gone but he couldn't forgive her sins either. Still, he had to know that Chandni was safe. He had to know that he hadn't sent her back into Indrani's clutches who might be willing to sell her again for money.

Getting his phone out he called his personal assistant, Mohan, and asked him to find out where Chandni was as soon as possible. He told Mohan where and when he had dropped Chandni off at the station and to track down her moves from there using security camera footage.

Dev was distracted at dinner and his family members had noticed. Just occupied with something at work, he had told Pooja once she had inquired.

He got a call from Mohan around midnight telling him that Chandni was currently living with an older man in Banaras. He remembered Chandni's mama living in Banaras. He was pretty sure Chandni was living with him. As far as he knew, Indrani was still living in Allahabad but he had to check. It wasn't because he wanted to see her again, he told himself. She had kept him safe despite him torturing her by driving him to a hospital when he had passed out. Despite her sins towards his family, he owed her one to make sure she wasn't in Indrani's clutches again.

He told Murli to tell everyone that he had to go out of town for work. He had already called to book a flight to Allahabad in a few hours. He landed in Allahabad in the morning and headed to the address that Mohan had given up.

He got out of the cab and walked the last few streets as they were too narrow for the car to go through. He didn't know what he was going to say once she opened the door. He didn't even know if he was going to be able to knock on the door. He wasn't even sure if he should be going to see her. She was after all one of the causes of his mother's death.

Chandni had just left the home to go to the hospital. Her volunteering shift was in the morning today. The hospital was just fifteen minutes walk away from her home. She was walking through the narrow streets lost in her thoughts. Like always, she had Dev's stone in her bag when going outside.

She turned a corner and almost bumped into Advay. They both came to an abrupt stop.

Chandni felt a fleeting moment of happiness upon seeing him before she remembered what he had done to her and her family.

Dev didn't know how to feel let alone how to respond. He had an urge to rush forward and hug her. He wanted to protect her from her step mother but he wasn't going to be so open towards someone who had hurt his family.

"Tum yahan?

"Badoon ko aap kehtay hain.

She wished he would stop saying that. She wished he would stop doing these things which reminded her of Dev. To be reminded of her Dev by someone who hated her as much as Advay did was painful.

"Aap yahan kaisay aayay.

He couldn't tell her that he had come because in a moment of his weakness his concern for her had overwhelmed him.

"Is shehar say guzar raha tha. Dekhnay aaya tha keh jub sadak chaap log sadak pay aatay hain toh kaisay lagtay hain.

She chastised herself for being happy to see him earlier. She had been dearly missing Adi, Pooja and nani.

"Sub log kaisay hain. Adi ki tabeeyat kaisi hai. Nani ji...

"Meray family members ki parwa karnay ka drama khatam karo. Ab toh tumhein koi paisa nahin milnay wala meray saath reh kar. Ab toh apnay asli chehray pay aa jao.

He felt angry at her pretending to give a damn about his niece when she had had no problem subjecting her own child to a lonely life in an orphanage.

"Mein aap ki zindagi mein waapis kisi maqsad say nahin aayi. Aap yahan khud aayay hein. Aisi bhi nafrat kya keh insaan door ja keh bhi door na ja sakay? She asked him.

He remained silent.

"Ab dekh liya na keh sadak chaap log kaisay lagtay hain. Ab aap yahan say ja saktay hain. With that she continued walking away from him. His hand itched to grab her arm and stop her from leaving him. Despite everything, he had felt a moment of peace at seeing her before remembering himself.

She couldn't help but pause after moving a couple of feet away from him. She looked back at him and he had turned around to watch her leave. She had an unexplained desire to go back towards him.

Chandni turned around and took a turn in one of the smaller roads to go to the hospital. Dev stood still watching her walk away for a few moments before going down another path to where he had left that taxi waiting for him to come back.

Dev continues to the airport while Chandni has arrived at the hospital
