EPISODE 2: SILENCED
EVEN IF ADVAY HAD BEEN SINCERE [and this is my hint to you, Sisters, that he was not!] such flowery speeches would not have served him. No, not with this Heroine. You see, Chandni was a realist, not a romantic. Truth alone could move her heart.
Moreover, while she was boxed-in like this, no words would reach her mind. With the wall behind her and him before her, she felt only one thing.
Cold dread.
She tore her one hand from his grip---at the same time, pushed his chest with the other!---and lunged away from him. Only once she was in the open and had placed substantial steps between them, she turned back to face him. She drew a lungful of evening air to steady herself. Fortunately, she had not fainted this time. As she had at their first meeting.
From under his brow, he stared. She read his puzzlement. Of course. It was a rather disproportionate response to a mere kiss on the hand. So to divert him from speculating, she mocked him, "Does such nonsense ever work on a woman?"
He protested: "You doubt my words? Why? By your own admission, I came out of nowhere and appear wherever you go. If that is not witchcraft, then what is? I am bewitched, Chandni." And then he added, his voice deepening, "You-are-a-witch."
There was something almost sinister in how he spoke those last four words. Chandni shivered.
"Is that so?" she gave a derisive laugh, folding her arms across her chest to combat the chill. "Theek hai. I release you from my spell. Done. You may return whence you came. Lucknow, right? If you hurry to the station, you can still catch the seven-twenty via Kanpur."
It was his turn to laugh. A humourless laugh. "With what ease you dismiss people," he said. "First you make them love you and then you betray them."
Kya?! Love? Betrayal? Her eyes widened at his choice of words. And his solemn tone. This conversation had truly taken a turn into the land of bizarre.
"I've had enough of this foolish talk, Advay," she lifted her hands to punctuate her words. "I don't appreciate---"
"---Advay?" he interrupted. "On first name basis. Now we're getting somewhere." He moved towards her until he was standing opposite.
Chandni remained where she was, but only because of the secure knowledge that the door was within reach. It was imperative that she hold her ground. This man must be disabused of the belief that she was amenable to his attentions. And it must be done in the strongest language. Because he appeared deaf to anything less.
"You are mistaken if you believe that my calling you by your name suggests an---an---an invitation," she corrected, using her firmest tone. "You've been addressing me with unwanted familiarity since we first met. I was only returning the insult. And as for this sentimental rubbish, I don't for a moment believe that you are sincere. But even if you are---" she continued, "---I do not welcome it. I am not interested. My heart belongs to another." She gave that statement a moment to land. Then added, "My advice to you is to stop this filmi nonsense because it is wasted on me. And if you don't---I'll inform the authorities. Our family may be impoverished but my family hold the Mahantship and that carries weight in this town."
Her words appeared to have some impact on him, for he was silenced. Almost thoughtful.
"Understood?!"
"Perfectly," came his reply. He almost sounded hurt, Sisters.
Yes, she felt a bit of a shrew---but it had to be done. If she knew anything about such men, it was this: Forceful language went further than any appeal to their better nature. And she also knew that any hint of softening now would undo all ground she had just gained.
We women often undo our best work by piling on addendums.
So Chandni suppressed that impulse, whirled towards the door and left the terrace returning to her waiting family.
He followed in silence. Below, he indicated to the Broker that he had seen enough, thanked Indrani for admitting his intrusion---pivoted and left the house. His manner told Chandni that her speech had been effective. And for this she was pleased.
Yet, there was also something within her which made her wonder if she would ever see Advay Singh Raizada again. Would he follow through on the purchase of the house? Or would he disappear from Allahabad as suddenly as he had appeared?
Her champal'd feet took her to the dehleez from whence she watched him descend to the outer courtyard. But just before he slid into the waiting vehicle, he turned his head to look back at the house. He seemed to expect that she would be there. And Chandni immediately regretted that she had gratified his intuition. She feared that to a mind like his, it would speak of interest.
He sent her a long look of meaning which was lost on her. And then he was gone. But not from her thoughts.
Chandni, despite having her fears, comes across as a strong woman. Advay is leaving so many hints which perplexes her but doesn't ring a bell yet. Needless to say, your storytelling style is riveting
With what ease you dismiss people, he said. "First you make them love you and then you betray them"...These lines ...speak his mind...he must have loved her with all his heart...
