It was all a farce. His protective aura, his gentleness, his ode to keep her safe at all times. He might have rescued her from Pratham, but he had subjected her to a lifetime of humiliation. And believe it or not, that monster was none other than her Dev.
A part of her knew. She had perhaps always known that he was Dev. She could sense it in his gentle caress. The way her body perfectly moulded into his. The way he gently rocked into her, making her reach heights she couldn't fathom. But somehow, that lover of hers had transformed into a sadist. He was Advay now. A man who wanted nothing more but to see her in immense pain. She could see it in his eyes. That satisfactory glint that stemmed from her humiliation. He had just destroyed her entire family. Had convinced the whole of Allahabad to banish them because of her "questionable character. She could scarcely recollect his marriage vows. Those filled with unimaginable loathing. Had this betrayal been carried out by a stranger, she would have felt less frazzled. But when he told her that he was none other than her Dev, she felt the breath knock out of her lungs. She couldn't fathom how her Dev had forgotten all about their midnight trysts. How could he forget the blood that stained his sheets the first time he made love to her ? How could her Dev forget the touches and the strokes which were exchanged in the confines of his room ?
She stood, silent tears streaming down her face, as he maligned her character in front of the entire hall. The "so-called reception was merely a plan. To exact the revenge that he had sworn he would take. The baby in the basket was a testimony of her filthy character. Surprisingly, he hadn't mentioned their midnight trysts even once. Even though he was well aware that they had taken place before their marriage. And to bring those to the attention of the public, would erode her reputation further. Perhaps, he held those sacred. But who was she kidding ? This man hated her with all his being.
It was obvious he had opted for this strenuous path of revenge to clear his parents name. It was justified, after all. As Advay divulged the horrors Indrani and co had committed to eliminate the Raizada family, Chandni felt the bile rising in her throat. They deserved what was coming their way, but how was she at fault ?
She wondered whether all his rationale had flown out of the window. Did he seriously hold an eight year old Chandni responsible for his parents murder ? She understood his wrath but failed to comprehend why it was directed at her. She might have committed a grave mistake a few years ago, but her intention was never to harm Dev, but what Dev was doing right now, her unnecessary character assassination, was ill-intended. This betrayal was ten times worse than her betrayal. She couldn't fathom that he had merely used her for sex and was dumping her. Nani's pleas fell on deaf years as Dev continued his unpleasant brigade.
It wasn't soon before the police reached the scene and arrested her mother.. step-mother and all those who were involved in the scam. It was no surprise that during his stay, the resourceful Raizada had gathered plenty of evidence to put the Vashisth clan behind bars for the rest of their lifetime. She watched her family being arrested with sense of grief and...relief.
She grieved. She was human at last. Even though her family wasn't exactly affectionate, she was attached to them at some level. Even a pet gets attached to their owner within months. She was a breathing, bleeding human being, although the discriminatory and horrendous treatment that she had received from all ends, would suggest otherwise. She grieved because she had been used as a pawn by her step-mother, whom she had revered like a bloody fool. She grieved because she had been violated in every sense, emotionally by her step-mother and her current husband and physically by the kidnapper who according to her husband was 'non-existent'.
But she felt relieved. And somehow this sense of relief assured her that she would make it through. Indrani would finally be out of her life. The underhanded taunts of her family members would soon become a distant memory. And the best of all, or perhaps the worst, Advay would let her go. She had decided. She would not...could not, subject herself to anymore humiliation. The kind of man that didn't trust her, was exactly the kind of man she had no interest in. Be it Advay or Dev.
Once all her family members had been arrested and Dev had ensured that his Nani was seated in the car, he risked a glance at her.
"I win, Chandni, Advay drawled in that deep set voice of his, a smirk plastered on his handsome face.
"No, you didn't Dev.I might have lost my family, but by doing this, you've lost all my love and respect for you, and although you don't realise it now, today is perhaps your biggest loss, she stated in an ice cold tone.
With one last glance at her, Advay exited the hall.
Chandni smiled to herself as she thought of how foolish Dev had been. He had shamed her for having a baby out of wedlock and yet he hadn't realised, that at this very moment, she was pregnant with his unborn child.
