Chapter 8
Omkara walked the dark and damp corridors of the police station with dread. The past few days had taught him that the people he thought he knew did not exist. Instead he had seen monsters that preyed on people in broad daylight. As he followed the inspector to the last cell, he girded himself to face the worst of them, the man who had shot the sweet and selfless Annika. Eyes hardening and face set in stone, Om stalked to the door.
A sharp rap from the inspector's cane on the bars of the jail, had a figure who was huddled in the far corner unfurl himself, stand slowly and walk stiffly into the meagre light afforded by the single bulb. Involuntarily a gasp issued from Om's lips. Daksh was badly bruised. A cut ran diagonally from his hairline to his right eyebrow. Bluish purple bruises stood out in stark relief against his cheekbones and jaw. Dried blood lingered in the corner of his mouth but it was not the bruises that had Omkara gasp, it was the maniacal light that glittered in his eyes.
"He has confessed to plotting to kill Ms Annika and shooting her at the courthouse, said the inspector. There was no remorse, no pain just pure hatred in Daksh's eyes. "Why? he whispered the question.
"Because I could. Because she and your brother betrayed me. They played me for a fool. I did all the hard work to separate them. I stalked and terrorized her so that she would accept the first proposal of marriage to escape the fear. I even convinced Shivaay that she and I had become lovers before marriage and that I paid her money for it. Despite all that he still married her. MARRIED HER. Where is the justice in that, huh? Why should both of them get away with it? Now, she is dead and he is going to live in pain for the rest of his life. The great wall Shivaay Singh Oberoi was not save his wife, his lover and my cheating fiance. This is Daksh's justice.
Eerie laughter echoed in the cell while Om's eyes widened in horror. This was much worse than he thought. Voice hoarse with the effort of holding his emotions at bay Om barked, "She is not dead. Do you hear? SHE IS NOT DEAD. And if I have any say, you will never be able to see the light of the day or even wander near her again.
The laughter stopped, Daksh edged closed to the bars and a sibilant whisper came out "Then she must die. Annika must die. There is no forgiveness in Daksh's world.
Om read the promise in Daksh's eyes and felt chills running down his spine. He broke into a run heading away from the cell and the police station as the unnatural laughter followed him. Shivaay needed to know. The danger was not over.
City Hospital
Kalyani Singh Oberoi sat holding Annika's hand in hers as she slept. She had always thought that she was a fair and just person but it was just recently that she had realized she had been selfish. She had looked out only for the interests of her family and in the process sent a young girl almost to her death. If Annika had been her actual granddaughter then Kalyani would have done everything in her power to free her from the tyrant who forcibly married her and seen to it that she went far away from danger. Instead she had pushed Shivaay and Annika together hoping they would work things out and then compounded it by emotionally blackmailing Annika into letting Shivaay go free. The pale and wounded young girl lying on the hospital bed surrounded by machines was a stark reminder that she had tried to play God and failed miserably.
"Dadi, please go home, get some rest. Annika will not wake up any time soon. She is on heavy medication which makes her sleep most of the day.
"I will never forgive myself for this, whispered Kalyani Singh Oberoi. Rheumy eyes looked up at her grandson, "I should not have asked her to come to court and save you. She did it for me. Look what I have done to her?
Unable to meet Dadi's eyes, Shivaay looked away. "It's not you Dadi, it's me, he confessed in a subdued voice.
"I committed a crime and she is paying the price. Swiping his hand across his forehead he said in a plaintive voice, "I don't know how to set it right Dadi... How do I even begin to ask forgiveness? Annika doesn't remember anyone or anything.
The room to the door banged open and Om barged in disheveled. "O...Om kya hua?" "Daksh... the quiet way in which Om said his name had Shivaay's world spin for a moment. In all the mayhem after Annika's shooting, he had forgotten about Daksh!
"He is not done. He wants Annika dead and you to pay the price for betraying him. "Be...betray? Shivaay felt the icy tingles of fear start to creep up from his toes. It seemed once again Annika was in crosshairs because of him. Another thought struck him then, Om must have figured out the whole truth now. Shamefaced, he looked away waiting for Om to condemn him.
"We need to shift Annika from here as soon as possible. Daksh is mad and he can do anything at any time, the expected condemnation did not come. Om had chosen not to reveal the complete truth and Shivaay could only be grateful that Dadi remained oblivious to the true reason that he had treated Annika so abysmally.
"We have done enough damage to Annika and her life. I promised her before she came to the court that if she did this one favor then none of us would ever darken her doors again and I intend to keep the promise no matter what the cost, declared Dadi.
Shivaay reeled from another blow, Annika had come only because Dadi had promised her that they would all leave her alone? Annika had had enough of him and was shutting him out of her life. Defeat bowed his shoulders and he stared at nothing in particular.
"She is unwell and unable to look after herself right now, so do what you must to protect her and keep her safe. But I am warning you Shivaay, once she is well and can look after herself, you will give her divorce and let her go free, else I will leave Oberoi house and permanently shift to Haridwar. I will live the rest of my life there and repent for the sins that you have committed. She swept out of the room leaving a stunned Shivaay in her wake.
Everything that he valued was slipping out of his fingers, Dadi had just given him an ultimatum which was giving him "michmichis in Annika's language , Om and Ru were barely talking to him and he dreaded what the rest of the family would say when he finally went home.
In the middle of it was the girl who was the one reason for all his pain and the only source of light at the end of a dark tunnel, Annika. All the roads to redemption started and ended with her. Perhaps earning her forgiveness would finally lay to rest the demons haunting him and maybe, just maybe pacify whichever God she had prayed to the night of the reception.
A week later:
Voices disturbed Annika's sleep. She frowned wanting them to go away but like the bees in the garden behind her house they buzzed and hummed incessantly. Eyebrows scrunched in anger she slowly opened her eyes to find bagad billa talking to a tall man in suit boot. The pain in her chest and head had subsided to a dull ache and she suddenly realized she was extremely hungry.
Scanning the room for food she realized she was still at the hospital. No one seem to paying any attention to her and like a typical child she decided enough was enough. She let out a loud wail and immediately her new friend rushed over, "tum theek ho? Why are you crying? Are you in pain, should I call the doctor?
"Bagad billa, I am katti with you. Don't talk to me. My head hurts. I am hungry and I want aloo puri. Also you promised to get me out this place and you haven't. Ma and Baba have not come to see me... her list of complaints grew and Shivaay swiped his forehead and muttered under his breath "pagal ladki.
Stopping in the middle of her tantrum, she frowned in confusion, she had heard those same words before. Seeing her frown Shivaay asked, "What happened?
"This is not the first time you are calling me pagal right? Shivaay froze and willed himself to breathe slowly. The frown on her face deepened, "Tumne mujhe pagal kaha? Jaa...same to you, back to you, no return, and proceeded to cross her hands over her stomach and look away. The man in the suit boot muffled a laugh with his hand. Shivaay shot him a glare and then turned to Annika.
Afraid that she was starting to remember, he quickly tried to make amends, "Okay, okay sorry... I got angry because you called me bagad billa again. I have a name, its Shivaay Singh Oberoi. You can call me Shivaay.
A vague memory surfaced, "Shivaay she drew out the syllables as if testing the name and Shivaay drew in a sharp breath. He had never expected to hear his first name again from her lips and it was just as beautiful as the first time he had heard it when she had uttered it in a drunken stupor after consuming Ru's punch.
She frowned again, "I will call you SSO, I like that better. Shivaay sighed, SSO was atleast better than the Mr Shivaay Singh Oberoi she had hurled at him after the reception that had felt like a hail of bullets.
He turned around to Aman "Give me the photo. The man in suit boot handed SSO a photo and Annika craned her neck to see it. "That's my chutki and this is me!! she exclaimed in happiness pointing to the faces in the photograph.
"Chutki likes mirchi ke pakoda so much that one day she ate a lot of them and Baba had to take her to the doctor because her tummy hurt. When she came back she told me she told me she wanted to be a doctor because then she could eat as many mirchi ke pakode as she wanted and if she fell sick then she could write medicines for herself! She is so smart! Delight shone in her eyes and a beautiful smile graced her lips and inspite of the dire circumstances, Shivaay found himself smiling along with her.
"Annika do you have a photo of your parents? Do you know what their names are? he asked. "Yes, there are lots of them at home. Of course I know their names, its Ma and Baba.
"Where is home?
"Home? Arre... home is next to Chandu chacha's house.
"Now who is this Chandu chacha?
"You don't know Chandu chacha??? He is the best halwai in Mumbai, Chutki and I often eat his gajar ka halwa... and on she went about Chandu chacha's sweets. It was becoming very evident to Shivaay that Annika did not know the address of her house or the full names of her parents. Other than this photo and the adoption papers there were no other clues to help him trace her family.
"Annika, I will listen to your Chandu chacha's tales later. Today you are going to get discharged from the hospital and I will take you to a nice place with a garden and lots of things to eat. When your Baba and Ma return they will come there, he lied hoping that it would turn true. "Let me call a nurse to help you dress.
Walking out of the room after calling the nurse, Shivaay asked Aman to visit the orphanage from where Annika was adopted and continue the investigation. The two security guards he had posted outside her room after Om's warning about Daksh nodded at him as he passed.
Whipping out his phone he was just about call Khanna to check if the car was ready when a loud scream and the shattering of glass reached his ears. He hurled himself through the door to Annika's room and raced into the washroom to be greeted by the sight of a sobbing Annika being held by the nurse and shattered pieces of glass littering the floor.
"She threw the toothbrush holder at the mirror explained the nurse.
Grabbing Annika Shivaay shook her slightly, "Tum theek ho? Pagal ho gayi ho kya, agar tumhe kuch ho jata toh?
Annika sobbed more loudly pointing at the mirror and asked "Who is that? looking at her own reflection in the remaining broken pieces.
Realization dawned but before Shivaay could utter a word, a worried Dr Gauri arrived. "What happened? I was passing by when a heard a scream.
Disentangling Shivaay's arms from her shoulders, Annika hugged Dr Gauri. "She is not me. I am scared pointing to the mirror.
"I was helping the patient change clothes and brush her hair Doctor, when she looked in the mirror. She screamed and threw the toothbrush holder at the mirror and started sobbing saying that the girl in the mirror scared her because it wasn't her, said the nurse.
Realization dawned on Dr Gauri's face. Annika had never seen her face after waking up from her coma and for a 7 year old girl to see the face of an adult in the mirror must be traumatizing.
Murmuring soothing words Gauri ushered Annika to the hospital bed. "I know what you saw in the mirror was scary Ms Annika. We did not tell you something when you woke up in here. You hit your head when you fell and got hurt. Because of that you have forgotten some things. You are not seven Annika, you are actually 25 years old. You have forgotten 18 years of your life.
Annika stared at Dr Gauri with confusion writ large on her face, "I am 25 years old? 25??? Her bottom lip started to tremble and tears began to gather in eyes. "You are lying right... is it April fools' day today? Desperately she looked at the other people in the room for confirmation that it was indeed April Fools' Day. When she received only grim looks from the people in the room, Annika started to wail, "Baba...
Unable to see Annika in this state Shivaay jumped in, "Your Baba is coming Annika. If you cry like this then your head will hurt again and the Doctor will have to keep you here in the hospital for more time and you won't be able to leave with your Baba.
The wails subsided into hiccups. "If I am 25 now then chutki must be... she started counting on her fingers and after a good 5 minutes squealed, "23!!!.
Shivaay rolled his eyes, it had taken her 5 minutes to figure that out.
Jumping ahead to the next thought, Annika wondered aloud, "Does Baba have white hair now? I have tell him to make it black like Chandu chacha else my friends will make fun of him.
Then she turned to look at Dr Gauri before asking curiously, "Do I have a job now or am I still in school? My teacher told me that if I didn't do better in Maths then she will keep failing me and even after I turned 25, I would still be in school...
Again Shivaay rolled his eyes, apparently her atrocious Math skills were a problem long before her entry in Sahil's life.
Dr Gauri cleared her throat and glanced at Shivaay before replying, "Actually you are married now and then pointing at him, "to Mr Shivaay Singh Oberoi.
Annika gasped, "Him??? That bagad billa... do I look like a gadhi to you? All he does his frown and yell. No I am waiting for Hritik Roshan to come for me and then we are going to dance and sing "Ek pal ka jeena... and accompanied it with the Hritik Roshan step from the movie.
Exasperated Shivaay cut in, "No, Hritik Roshan is not going to come for you. You are coming with me and we are not going to dance or sing any songs...
Dr Gauri tried to muffle the laughter bubbling up but couldn't. It burst forth in gales of hearty laughter that had others in the room also guffawing away. The imaginary picture of Shivaay Singh Oberoi dancing around a tree singing love songs for his wife was hilarious. Annika and Shivaay glared at each other and when it became obvious that there would be no winner in the glaring match, Annika crossed her hands above her waist, looked away and harrumphed.
"Try and understand Ms Annika, until you get better there is no way you can dance around a tree or sing anyway. For now, please go with him and take good care of yourself. I will come visit you for your checkups said Gauri hoping to pacify the opponents.
Reluctantly Annika stood up and walked over slowly to Shivaay as if she was being given a punishment. "I don't like you. This nice doctor said that's why I am coming with you. When my Baba and Ma come and pick me up, you can sing and dance around trees all alone.
Shaking his head and barely holding on to his temper Shivaay held Annika's hand to support her as they slowly made their way out of the hospital. Looking over his shoulder he saw that Om and Ru had also made their way out after paying the hospital bills and were getting into the car. Prinku was planning to go directly to the farmhouse and make sure everything was ready by the time they reached there. He had also hired a couple of good nurses to stay by Annika's side as she convalesced. Strapping himself into the driver's seat, he noticed that Ru had chosen to get in the back seat with Annika which left Om sitting with him upfront. The deafening silence from Om was grating and he wished Om would shout, yell or just say something.
Precap: "O my Mata Shivaay, what about Tia?
"Where did you get this photograph from?
