IB Social Messages - Nah ! Or Yes

Last week IB had started delivering social messages?

Seriously?

My first reaction was a Tamil saying " Muzhankallukum mottai thalaikkum edhuku muduchi podranga " which roughly translates to " why are they trying to tie the knees to a shaved head"!!

So for me after watching all 500+ episodes, IB and social messages were two different things no connection whatsoever. It's a three brothers story and a beautiful Shivika journey. With constant villains turning up from every where and that too exactly three in numbers.

Yes some might say they talked about women empowerment/independence in Malika track. And it was blended in the story unlike the current ones. True. (This reminds me we all should tweet Gulneet to get a moonke peeche reboot. :))

Before I digress from the current topic let me say it first I like these social awareness topics. I don't mind the preaching or the moral science classes like one of my friend calls it. We all have to remember execution of tracks is not strong point in IB.

Well I will share two cents on these social messages track.

Social Cause 1:

Sharing your personal details in social media including PDA.

They handled it beautifully.

There are few who would like to share anything and everything in SM (Rudy character IMO), few others very selective memorable moments (Omkara again my opinion)
Doesn't want to share anything in SM (Shivaay IMO) (Please don't ask why he allowed Tia to post in SM. I think it was because it didn't make a difference to him and really didn't care much. Only with Anika it became jo bhi hai it's between me and Anika equation)

So it's totally depends on the individual how and what they want to share in SM. And also be ready to face the roses/likes or the bricks/trolls.

Social cause 2: HMT type

HMT - Hindi medium type. We can come up with another twenty variations for this in India like TMT - Tamil/Telugu medium types. Given that each state speaks different language.

This track was close to my heart because I was a TMT ;)

I could relate with it being a TMT school student who faced lot of flak in initial days of college. I could totally relate to Anika stuttering because I can easily read Shakespeare but never could speak in English in confidence. Because the environment was such that if you don't speak English people literally look down at you as if you have come from a different planet. And that kind of made you more nervous.

And I am sure there were thousands like me could relate to her. We still don't understand the basic concept of languages I feel. That it is there to communicate and not to judge or show off!

Social Cause 3: Taking care of your parents

The intro could have been better. Instead of a random nani they could have picked someone really related from Oberoi's friends circle. Would have had a better impact. The issue is very relevant today, it was relevant 10 years before and will be relevant 10 years down the lane as well.

There is always pros and cons in both nuclear and joint family. And IMO we all will be debating on this topic for a long while.

Though I didn't like the way track introduced the Nani but I absolutely loved the way it ended. There was no white washing of the nani's children or any MAHAN advice to her children how to keep their mother happy.

Shivaay in typical SSO style wanted to expose them in media and take them to task. But nani played the mother card. I loved the fact she was not sent back with her children instead was asked to live in a home with dignity.

Now Aanth Vishwas track with Mayi is going on. If I have to write about this track it will take another 2 paragraphs for me to complete!! And if its true Meetoo campaign is going to be one of the messages I will need a separate post for it!

And my best friends don't really appreciate me writing big essays. So I am going to stop with just these three social causes here.

Finally the reason why I like the social message tracks.

The reach of hindi serials and Bollywood is tremendous in our diverse country. And taking up some social issues is really appreciated instead of typical kitchen politics. And it's one of the reason I watch IB.

I can give an example from SPA awards 10 years before I think not sure of the time line though, where a family came from a remote part of UP to attend the ceremony and thanked the YRKKH team for teaching them through Akshara character that wearing gunghat in head is not equivalent to respecting elders. And they stopped forcing their daughter in laws to wear gunghat. If I remember correctly it wasn't just one family there were many who did that and wrote to SP.

My point is we all come from different backgrounds and with different set of beliefs. So if someone is trying to spread social awareness let's not discourage them. With the diverse population and the kind of intolerance we have for each other;) it's really need of the hour and if it's coming from a Hindi serial well and good. And even if it making a difference only in few families it's great!

Oh of course I miss Shivika and really don't like the OOC to fit the track. But for me it's for a good cause. So I will wait for my Shivika to grace the screen again. Until then let me enjoy the OOC, OTT in these episodes and troll with my friends.

And time again Gulneet have proved its all worth it even though sometimes logic goes to the Bermuda triangle in IB land.

If someone is going to come and tell me Gul is not capable of giving social messages I am going to borrow the words from Gul and suggest to them, please go and watch other 800 serials that is available and leave IB alone.

I am going to sit and cheer Gulneet in the first row with my friends and wait for Shivika and Obros to grace the screen in the IB land.

And finish my looong essay quoting the lady herself " The idea of touching social issues in the show is not to make a judgment but to spark a debate. You can have your ideas but one must be very aware of the meaning and repercussions of that idea."

Awesome Post Nikki...👏👏

Will come back to reply more in detail with an essay.😆

Edit: Totally agree with you Nikki. Ishqbaaaz is right now going beyond entertainment and trying to discuss about debatable social issues keeping aside the original essence of storyline. I don't know for what reason this is being done but i thought this is only temporary until IPL ends or else it would go for few more weeks. Totally depends on all the factors in the entertainment industry which we r unaware of.

Coming to social issues they discussed till now, I'm happy with the topics being chosen for the show. However, they r lacking in the execution and proper writing to incorporate within story now and then as you pointed out.

PDA in Social Media: They rightly and properly shown different views of diff people on the same issue PDA on social media like u pointed out. This is an unending debatable issue and can go on forever.😆

But they have shown diff perspectives of looking at PDA on social media through the characters of the show. When Shivaay felt their personal life, and moments are meant to be personal in between them, Annika wanted to show it off to the world and let everyone know how beautiful their life is. Whereas Rudy uploads each and everything just because he is addicted for likes while Bhavya is not all interested in social media being aware of how toxic it can be. On the other hand, Om wants to show off his PDA for his known reasons while Gauri is not okay with it but still goes with it.

And when there was debate going on among characters, it was even highlighted through Shivaay that posting PDA on social media is not wrong if their intentions r right. And it should not be done for silly reasons. And also through Ruvya characters, they tried to show how toxic it is, how u r exposing urself for others to comment badly on u. So if u r ready to take the comments easily, then u r again open to post them. But the main thing which is pointed out in this small track is, u need to have marzi of both the partners to post PDA pics on social media and also u need to be positively open enough and strong to take negative comments. I got the message clearly what they were trying to convey.

HMT issue: This is the most relatable issue for us coming from South India. Many said in this small track Annika character is butchered. But I don't think so. I come from South India where Hindi is 3rd language. I can read and write Hindi as well as know many words and their meanings, but still I was not able to speak even a single sentence in Hindi confidently. I keep searching words while talking.😆 My language improved only when I started using it regularly and watching Hindi movies and shows.😆

And this holds true not only to Hindi. When I traveled abroad, although I was a English medium student and also a good English student, but still I was not confident enough to speak with foreigners fluently😆 With time and using the language frequently only I managed to build confidence in me.

So by that how r people expecting Annika who was a Hindi medium student, who knew English words, but she never used to speak in English talk confidently in English and that too in many sentences.😆 very relatable nahi.😳
So for me, Annika is in character in this track. Now don't come and say Annika know the various dishes names perfectly what Shivaay said in the past. knowing dishes names is completely different. She worked in a canteen and she had to know them to survive in the field and she learnt.😳

And coming to looking down upon you, because u r not good in English is also true in today's society. I, myself saw how some private schools interview parents to give admissions to their kids in pre-nursery 🤣 Trust me my cousin and her husband literally went through books and polished their English speaking skills just because they wanted their child to get admission in one of the top English medium schools😆

Areey bhai...language kya hai..? It's just a medium to convey but now-a-days it is being used as a barrier between people. So I completely loved this topicin Ishqbaaaz.

Taking care of parents: This is the most frequent issue I'm seeing in the society right now. But as Anjali pointed out in the next comment, it's not always children at fault. There can be parents too who r a pain in children's lives. But still I don't think it's a good idea to abandon parents just because they r a pain. Instead find a middle ground where u can balance ur parents and ur life. As kids, even we make numerous mistakes but did our parents ever think to abandon us just because we do mistakes. No, they try to correct us. Similarly, when it comes to elders, one should be patient enough to bare the consequences of their mistakes. That's why they say as a person grow older, they will be almost equal to kids.😆

I'm not saying u have to bear them however torturous they are. But one of the kids should eventually take care of them even though they r pain and u cannot abandon.😕 This is just my point of view. U may agree or disagree with me.😳

And one more thing to add, people say SSO is being shown as mahaan through this tracks. I really didn't understand what mahaan thing he did which is so OOC that he is considered as mahaan?😆 It's in the character of SSO itself and SSO is all about family. When he came to know Pinky did a big kaand in his life without his knowledge breaking his marriage and successfully separating Annika from him, did he abandon Pinky? No, but he punished her staying at home and also making her stay at home. He followed the same thing with OmRu and Tej. Anyways, this is again a debatable topic which will go on.😆

AndhVishwaas: This is again one more issue I see right in my home😆 and it's none other than my mom who believes in aira gaira nathu naira people claiming themselves to be so called god-man/god-woman.🤣 I tried many times to explain her but she is still the same😕 Again, her andhvishwaas came up from her vishwaas for bhagwaan only😆 There were numerous times I was asked to behave properly to this so called god-man/woman and also there were numerous times when my mom ended up trying to tell them that I'm not behaving properly because I'm innocent to their powers🤣 just like Daadi was to Billu😆 Very relatable nahi😆

Anyways, waiting for the track to end and I'm happy they r addressing this in my fav show.😳

Finally, i agree with you and would say the same that, when one is trying something to highlight social issues and spread the awareness, let's just not discourage them. I know Ishqbaaaz is a romcom drama love story but we have been watching it since last 540 episodes. If for a few episodes, they r just trying to show mainly focusing on social issues, don't get disheartened. I will patiently wait for the show to come back to its original plot soon sometime or the other.😳😆

Hi Nikki , great post 😊
The execution of each social message issues could've been much better and well spaced out! Only one that was executed well was last Tuesday episode - the Hindi /English debate. Could connect to it well because me being a Malayalam medium type 😆 and Anika's story was also well incorporated into the track , so totally relatable. And it gave both sides of the argument, that is just because one speak good English it doesn't mean that person is anyway superior to a person who doesn't speak English. At the same time the way cvs linked it to Sahil's education to show that it's also important to learn English in this globalised and competitive world and as parents ( in this case Anika) trying to provide better education and opportunities for children , a privilege they didn't get when they were young. So overall great one.

But the nani track was handled very badly, of course Shivaay was all sweet and nice to nani just as his sweet relationship with daadi. But just like children abandon their parents during their old age, there are equally some parents who make their children's life a living nightmare with bad behaviour , imagine a Pinky type mother in law who's not redeemed 😆 And strangers just walking into OM to claim they r so and so and allowed to stay 😆 But Khannaji was super cute 😉

PDA issue, OOC character and weird dialogues for Anika I didn't like , but there were some nice Shivika moments like mirchi song, selfie session etc. But the conclusion of the track , I didn't like , felt it was a one sided debate with a conclusion that as if pda is wrong !! instead it should've been if someone want to do it , it's upto them , why should others bother about it and if one is not comfortable with it, then don't do it!

Sidhi mayi one- I like it for the troll worthiness of it all , satyavachan 😆

Bottom line though, missing Shivika badly , there has to be meaningful Shivika scenes for me to enjoy an episode, last Tuesday was an example, it was on social message, but it was meaningful and beautiful 😳
Thanks for reading my essay 😆

Ishqbaaaz for me has always been a love story with intensity and passion between Shivaay and Annika. They can be as different as white and black yet as similar as two pods of a pea.It is a story of a snob towards humility and a story of loneliness towards company and warmth. It is the journey of self realisation and love and also a travelogue on the road of redemption.
All other things that need to be said in this tale is an extra, any lesson imparted is an extra and we all love to have something more for the price of one😉

The producer wants to spark a debate on social issues.I have nothing against that;in fact it is a welcome change from nursery line formation and girl gang and boy gang plots of immature teens! What I am not in favour is the compromise in the story line. The same moral issues could have been weaved into the track with more finesse rather than these disjointed moral discourses compromising the general character sketch and storyline. The English medium versus vernacular medium was well portrayed though it rather was too Bollywoodish; but still applaudable and entertaining. However, each moral story completed hurriedly in one or two episodes is rather like the moral science period in the daily routine of school life to which I have my objection.

It is not possible to romance 24 X 7 but I am sure there are different ways of presenting a scenario with some romance thrown in.The episodes currently look like the characters are on anabolic steroids and hence they long jump from one frying pan to another.

The reach of Indian Tellywood is immense and hence nayi Soch can pervade the walls of a distant village.I agree to this wholeheartedly but medicine coated in sweet candy is always better than the bitter pills and hence social messages wrapped properly in a thrilling and intense story line will serve two purposes: lesson will be learned and enjoyed too!

Awesome and Much needed Post Nikki 👏👏
TV serials influence people a lot and Its a great initiative and I really appreciate efforts of Gulneet...
Best part in this is...Its much better than seeing vamps and villains moving around OM planning and plotting against oberois😃

But the thing that puts me off is way the tracks are handled...Extreme character assassination done be it Annika,Rudy,Dadi,Om,Gauri...For me only well handled tracks is HMT...and Social media track was good but high level character butchering...Ani and Om are never social buffs...coming to Taking care of parents...Nani entry and her reason was very lame...as you said it would hav been better If they took someone from oberoi friend circle or abhilasha said in other thread may be a old women comes under oberois car🤣
Though tracks end on a good note with beautiful message...but transition between tracks is really disappointing and worst in this is that placard saying "siddhi maayi..." some utter crap...When I was a kid I used to watch panchatantra aise dikhate the placards😆😆...as rimi said its seems to be moral science classes...😆
and Uparse no daily dose of shivika...we will feel low na😳

Finally I want to say...love this Initiative and am ok with tracks and social messages... Want these tracks to be blended in storyline with less character assassination and Of course with my daily dose of shivika...I will enjoy these more😳😳

Uff essay hogaya...bear with me😆

The message of importance of hindi in english medium schools or the HMT was beautifully presented..it was a brilliant episode..PDA was cute in its way. Agree with you, taking care of parents ended well but not the start...about the devi wala epi..its funny , dont know where its heading to ..but the actor playing devi maa is good and her scenes with shivaay are crazy.
