Chapter 5: The Journey
Rudra and Gauri were in a private jet, headed towards Pondicherry. They were used to travelling around the USA in private jets, the magazine could afford it, but because this was a long distance trip, Gauri had asked him to book tickets on a normal flight. But she changed her mind when she realised that she will have to rely on booking tickets on the journey back and she didn't want to be in Pondicherry a second more than required.
Whilst Rudra was organising his safety kit' to survive and think about how he is going to get through the two days in India, Gauri was reminiscing her day so far, and what an eventful day it had been, from planning her wedding, to the message, the interview and her decision. She still couldn't believe she had made that decision, hadn't she promised herself that she will never forgive her father?
But can one forget to breathe? Can one forget to feel?
If the answer to both these questions is no, well then, she cannot forget her father. She knew it was a lost battle she was trying to fight and tried to convince herself that she might have lost the battle but she will definitely win the war. Was she really going back to fulfil her duty as a daughter? Or had the feelings she had tried to bury deep in her subconscious re-surfaced? No, that can't be. She told herself. She had to forget about her childhood it was a survival mechanism that she had buried everything to do with her life in India so deep down below and she cannot undo it. She has to be strong, for her own sake.
She raised her hands in prayer to the almighty Shankarji to protect her from herself. All these trials and tribulations in life had tested her patience but she had never given up on her faith in God. She was spiritual to the core and this is what had kept her going when she faced difficulties in life. And she was hoping that this quality will come in handy when and if she has to face HIM!
No, HE cannot be there!
In fact, HE won't be there. How could he? Didn't he have a different life elsewhere? But how could she tell? What is he was in Pondicherry? What will she do? How will she...?
Gauri was torn. She was torn between what she wanted and how she had shaped her life to never ever want it.
She had been weak once; she didn't want to be weak again. No, she will stick to her resolve. She had promised she will marry KT and that's what she will do. It was a perfect arrangement for both of them. They had met at a conference after which KT had pursued her for years, inviting her for dinners, events and private functions. They had got to know each other in all this time and Gauri felt secure and comfortable. He liked to look at her, according to him she was a thing of beauty which gave him solace and he wanted her by his side. He never made untoward advances to her, as she had made it clear to him that she was not into that sort of thing.
In the past, any boyfriends Gauri had, lost interest in her very quickly as she was prickly when it came to intimacy. Not just physical intimacy, she didn't let anyone close to her even emotionally. In college, she was most sought after, an angelic Indian beauty who had a mind of her own. Many had pursued her but failed to make a long-lasting bond. After a while, people discovered that she was not capable of emotions, many called her stone- cold. That is why she didn't have any friends either; she just never opened up to anyone. Her childhood, any relations and friends and any emotions she learned to feel then, was locked away somewhere deep in the safe of her heart and the key thrown away, into ether.
No one ever knew the real Gauri, not even Gauri herself.
And it worked with KT because he never wanted to. He was old enough to have experienced everything in life by now: love, passion and intimacy. And so he was content to just have companionship with Gauri, no emotions, no hassles. Just pure and simple companionship, he was ensnared by her, she was by far the prettiest thing he had seen and he wanted to show her off.
And it worked for Gauri as she didn't have to commit to anything with KT. He just asked for companionship, which she also craved, somewhere deep down. And perhaps a psychiatrist would diagnose the situation as that Gauri was looking for a father figure in KT. Every girl looks to her lover, to be husband and life partner to be a likeness of her father. Gauri was no different. But in her case, it was not just likeness; she needed to be with someone old. She had been denied a father when she was little and that gap had never been filled by any other relation, definitely not a male relation. Sub-consciously, Gauri wanted to be looked after, by her father, somewhere, she was still the little ten years old, longing for her father, finding solace in KT's companionship.
She had tried very hard for all these years, for twenty years of her life to forget her father. Her mother had died at child birth, so Gauri never got to know her. Her father had raised her from since when she was a blob to ten year sold. She was very close to him and very possessive about him. And this has what had driven a wedge between her and HIM as well.
HIM!
Gauri shuddered.
Please God, let this journey be successful. I shall return soon, without crossing paths with HIM.'

So, what do you think?
Did the Gauri-KT situation become clear to people?
Did I do justice to the circumstances and the characters?
