Drabble 4: "It is not elementary, Dear Sherlock
Omkara was standing far away from the corpse, curiously watching Gauri bending over it, doing what? He couldn't fathom.
"What is this woman up to? thought Omkara trying to cover his nose to avoid the stench of the dirty drain getting into it. He looked again, only to see this jumpsuit clad, dishevelled hair mess of a lady really interested in a dead body!! He was a courageous, brave and intelligent but ... a bit squeamish, when it came to blood and dead body and all. He solved crimes, but preferred forensics handling all the evidence.
Gauri totally unaffected by the stench around her or the fact that she was staring at a dead body, kept bending over the corpse and asked the constable standing next to her for a tweezer. She then bent further and picked something tiny from the beard of the dead body and placed it in a small plastic bag.
"Miss Sharma, what do you think you are doing? The forensics team has already been here and gathered all evidence. They need to move the body soon, for post-mortem. he finally gave in when he could not contain his intrigue anymore.
"Mr. Oberoi, I am gathering evidence too. I prefer to do a thorough check on the crime scene in case forensics missed anything? And what do you think you are doing? What can you really gather standing so far away from the corpse? Gauri was as curious as Omkara about his behaviour too. How could an investigator discover anything like that?' this was beyond her. She believed in deep delving into crime scenes, something she had learned from shadowing a previous mentor of hers. And squeamish? That word didn't exist in her dictionary.
She held the transparent plastic bag before him and continued, "Look, what I found?
"What is it? Holmes? Omkara taunted her. She was really beyond him.
"Not elementary, Sherlock. It is a piece of a fabric, it can give us some clues to who it could belong to. I am sending it to the lab for testing. Gauri hit back with vengeance. How dare he question her style! She looked at him, standing far away, looking like an irresistible Adonis, and irritating the hell out of her with his mere presence. Why did he have to be so attractive? Damn!
"Ok. Let's go. The man has been identified as a Mr. Arora. I want to interrogate people close to him. Omkara was twitching to get started with his way' of solving crimes, away from the gory, ugly details of the crime scene. He used his intuition, and his reading of human mind, body and soul.
As they walked towards the car, Omkara filled in Gauri with the highlights of what the uniform team had found out by now, by doing a background check on the identified corpse. He was a maths professor in the nearby college, about forty years of age, married without children. He lived in Bandra, his residence was a ten minutes' drive from where they had found the body and right now they were going to meet his widow.
His voice was certain and confident whilst he rattled out the details, did she even find it seductive? Sexy, even? Bloody hell! This can't be happening? Gauri swore to herself silently, furious with herself.
Upon reaching the SUV, Omkara stood by the passenger door and opened it for Gauri. She was shocked, chivalrous as well! Not that she cared, but she did not expect her senior partner to open the car door for her. This time she entered and sat down to show some courtesy. Ufff! Why did he have to be so perfect? No, she will fight back, she wants to fly solo again and for this, she will have to do something?
Whilst these thoughts were taking Gauri's inner peace pinch by pinch, Omkara was lost in his own world, or rather an image. He had the picture of this absolutely stunning creature, who was sitting next to him right now, looking oblivious but perfect! Why? Why? He was determined to throw her out of this we are a team' business, wasn't he? A small part of him didn't agree, and he could feel his inner being already revolting against himself. Damn' he thought to himself. He turned to her.
"Holmes the minute he said this...
"Sherlock as if on cue, Gauri mouthed, "Can we take turns for driving?
Damn' he thought.' It wasn't elementary at all!'
