The story of three brothers. Ek kahani ke teen hisse and all that..
But I always felt that its three different stories interconnected in some parts. According to me each individual has their own story (however boring it might be for some others) and they are the hero of their story and everyone is supporting characters, but each supporting character has their own story where they are the hero.
Shivay is the hero of his story but he plays the love interest and later supporting husband in annika's story (and vice versa). He plays the supporting elder brother in om's and rudy's story (and vice versa).
But in his story he is the main character.
Since this story about three brothers so it was obvious that the centre stage will be divided into 3 parts. First the centre(middle) of these three stages will be taken by Shivay's drama and then Omkara's and lastly by Rudy. Yet in the same time the other 2 stage will have their own drama of other 2 brothers respectively but no, it did not happen (sigh).
After watching ishqbaaz for almost a year this is my pov about characters and their journey. (at least what should have been)
Shivay
Eldest son of oberois grew up with nkk instilled to his core by his mother but also family values instilled by his grandmother. Grew up watching a dysfunctional family sticking together only because of the money and power but also grew up watching his grandmother adore him and his cousins not because they will grow up and bring more money and power to the family but because they are her kin, her blood, simply hers.
He took care of his cousins made them his siblings. He became parent to omru and prinku even though he was a child himself. He practically raised Rudra (it was mentioned in one epi that omru's first word is bhai). He became the great wall to protect his family, mainly his siblings.
(I feel like rolling my eyes at few who says that Shivay doesn't have a past tragedy, yes compare to others it might seem nothing but growing up in a dysfunctional family where his mother is only after money where his father is distant where he had to grow up fast so he could provide somewhat decent childhood to his brothers and sister. No child should grow up before the right time. No child should bear the responsibility of an adult. In this I find Shivay and Annika are somewhat equal. The difference being Annika was poor whereas Shivay had money.)
For me Shivay journey was along with shedding nkk it was also about going away from family and its roots. Shivay Singh Oberoi is because of Oberoi family. His journey for me is towards individuality with the help of Annika.
Moving out of the house away from his family so he could find himself, struggling to find himself losing everything yet finding something new a different experience which would help him become the real Shivay Singh Oberoi not because he is an Oberoi but because he is Shivay. Becoming powerful in the true sense; becoming great in the true sense.
So I never had doubt about Shivay leaving home (vanvas).
Shivay the mind they said, yes minds jouney towards his heart (Annika shedding of nkk) and his soul (individuality).
Omkara:
Every artist has a tragedy. I heard it a lot growing up and I agree to some extent. Art is not the product of mind or body art is the product of soul and to evoke it something great must have happened. An artist takes every incident to the heart. They cherish the happiness more and they feel the sadness to the core.
Waking up daily in the middle of night to fighting parents, a father who prefers a mistress over his wife and children and a mother who prefers to drown herself in alcohol, left a wound in his soul which was never healed and most probably never will.
His solace from this was art and also his brothers. He had a bad childhood thanks to his parents but there were many moments of happiness as well due to his siblings.
Remember his shayari to Shivay,
Kuch pareshani ke pal, kuch hai malaal ke
Kuch bechaini ke pal hai kuch hai sawal ke
Inse todi fursat mile toh humse mil le
Hum gullako mai rakhte hein khushiyaan sambhal ke
The last line, he has been doing that his whole life.
For me Omkara's journey is towards his family, its roots along with learning that intention of a person matters not the route. Lying is okay in some situation.
He hates his father thus he hates his roots. He is proud of his individuality not of his family name.
If Shivay's journey to leave the family to find individuality, Om's journey to find his family, acceptance of his family, taking responsibility of family as a whole(not just some members). Acceptance of his father, understanding of his father that he is also a human being and he was wrong yes but family is there not just to punish you but also forgive you and love you. It goes both ways.
Om is the soul they said yes it is his journey towards heart (Gauri and shedding of belief that truth is the ultimate right) also his mind (thinking rationally, coming out of his sad past and acceptance of his father thus family roots with a rational thinking)
Rudra:
Rudy is the most sheltered obro, even though prinku is the youngest. But that doesn't mean he doesn't know the shortcomings of his parents, but he is not bothered about it. For him tej and jhanvi gave birth to him but Shivay is his parent. Every time he wants something anything (materialistic or problems) he comes to his brothers mostly Shivay because that is what a child does. He goes to his parents.
That does not mean he hates his parents. No he is also not bitter that they prioritized their own issues over their children. he simply doesn't care.
His issue is not family based, his is based on outward beauty (in the beginning) which later turned into age drama (somewhat relatable to outward beauty as it will soon start to fade because of age the usual society thinking (which is changing rapidly)).
Another is he is irresponsible (may be as both Shiv and om had to grow up before their time so they babied Ru so much that he remained so even though his time grow up has come a long back). I am not going to talk about childishness as most of the younger sibling like me agree that we remain childish no matter how much responsible and independent we become. It is natural to be childish with your family.
For me his journey is towards being responsible and taking care of business and becoming the true heir of Oberoi Empire and also opening of his eyes about inner beauty is what matter not the outer one.
Rudy is the body they said; yes it's his journey towards his heart (____ya and shedding of belief of only outward beauty is true one) and mind (taking care of business and being responsible).
Ps: still not sure whether it is Bhavya or Sowmya...
Annika
Once bitten twice shy..
Fate played a cruel game with her yet she remained strong facing the fate with her head held high.
She was broken, scarred, afraid to let anyone inside..
Yet she loved, cared, and made friends.
She hid under a persona, bubbly girl, and that became her fortress which no one could penetrate. She is independent but she never learned to be dependent. She worked alone but she never learned to be a part of team. She always fought her battles alone without an army.
But then she met him. The one who questioned her existence, the one who questioned her morality the one who called her roadside trash.
She never knew it was his journey from shivay Singh Oberoi to become Annika's shivay. She never knew she will become his pride, she never knew she will become the most precious in his life.
Yes she was the catalyst in/of shivays journey but she had a journey of her own.
It was her journey to become dependent, it was her journey to become part of a team, she now has a army, she now finally has a home.
Fate took her parents, it is giving her in some other forms, fate took her sister, she doesn't know yet but fate already returned her sister, fate took her childhood but it made sure that her present and her future will be beautiful. Fate finally apologized and like always she forgave it whole heartedly.
