SHATTERED
She kept on looking at the screen of her mother's phone which read 'DAMADJI' as the caller. She could hear his restless apologies from the other end, she knew he was crying too. A lone tear stubbornly escaped her eye and she disconnected the call and switched off the mobile phone. It had been hours, nearly a whole day that he was trying to contact her, he sent so many messages and called so many times that the battery of her phone succumbed and then she did not care.
For everything he did to her in the name of a surprise, she was heartbroken but could she be angry, Rightfully angry? Her mother kept asking her about Omkara from the moment she stepped into her home, she did not like the love and affection her mother possessed for her Son-In-Law. It was when Omkara called her, she happily talked to him for more than ten minutes and asked him to pay a visit. When she handed over the phone to Gauri ... Gauri walked in her room and shut the door.
Is she worth any apology for him? He has always been such a rigid and judgmental man, He never trusted her, He never got his facts right and now he is apologizing for whatever he said and did to her in the specifically special night. She was never worthy of him, Gauri had admitted to herself after the exhibition Fiasco but now she did not want to be worthy of him. Worthy of a man who can ruin himself thinking about how his wife can have an extra-marital affair.
Growing up without a father and surviving life with meagre resources, dropping out of school to being the bread earner of the hearth, taking care of her ailing mother and also her uncle and aunt who sold her to a malicious land lord Kali Thakur ... That day she knew she would die, Kali was behind her to kill her and if not she had planned to consume poison. Her Shankarji knew that in Twenty-two year old life, she had been through more vigorous kind of pain ... But how did the only man she dared to love accuse her of infidelity.
She knowingly unknowingly chose to love Omkara, the man who saved a stranger from death, the man who took good care of her mother, the man who was becoming habit for her. She was devoted to Omkara for giving her a new life, devoted as a wife like her mother always taught her.
Then why did he not accept her, why did he not honor her, why did he not tell the world that he is HIS wife. She knew he is an unhappy man and she held herself responsible for some part of his grief. She was certainly someone he would not accept in matrimony if the circumstances would have been normal.
She felt hopeless, desperate, despondent. It was the worst emotional pain even when she had been through worse in her life, she was traumatized. She felt like she will never be okay again, he is irreplacable. Why did she love him so much? Why was he so important? Why did she let him have the power of hurting her so much?
It is today that GAURI KUMARI SHARMA felt weak, she felt like giving up. She knew he did not like her ... Love then being out of question. She knew his escapism, She knew the kind of effort to win him as a husband and she tried without any complaints. A sacred relationship like marriage is always meant to be... Two individuals even when mere strangers come closer ... Gauri wanted her Omkaraji to be closer, she wanted to be closer to him but now she knew he did not love her, he could not love her ... He did not want to love her.
Gauri was indeed a heartbroken loser today, all her effort ... All her belief and all her prayers were meaningless. She accepted him as a husband proffesing her one-sided love for him. She lived difficult being emotionally distant from him ... She knew his mad rage, his fits of anger could range from shattering glasses to burning paintings to hurting himself, she was trying to deal with all of it but what she could never deal with is baseless frustration.
He did not look at her the way a husband admires his wife. He did not consider her when it came to making decisions, he always pushed her away, he did not care of wether she ate, or she slept or she was okay, he did not care to call her when she came to Bareilly to see her mother, he did not even ask ... He so easily accused her of infidelity ... Of cheating ... Of crime. For him she was always a gold digger, a vile woman ... He did not love her ...
Her stomach was aching and her body quivered.Tears drenched her pillow and Gauri did not realize when she drifted into sleep.
