||CHAPTER-5||

Rudra sneezed and resisted the urge to wrinkle his nose in displeasure.

"Now, now..." Anika tsked as she proceeded to gently hold his face and pat off the excessive compact powder sticking to his nose.

Finally, after what seemed like a few decades, Rudra wriggled out of Anika's grip and carefully dogged her prying hands on his way to the door.

"Bhabhi..." Rudra whined, "Any more powder and Shivaay Bhaiya would mistake me for his bride!" He giggled as he dodged the stuffed pillow flying his way.

"Listen to Anika, Rudr." Shivaay continued to type away in his laptop, "The Sangeet will be starting soon and I want you to be picture perfect till the end of it."

"Bhaiya! This is your Sangeet not mine." Rudra pouted at his stubborn brother. He could see what his brothers were trying to do. They were discreetly keeping an eye on him for whatever reasons. This morning, he had woken up to what he would describe as his heaven.

He smiled softly at the memory and the pleasure he felt on knowing that his brothers had sneaked into his room and had sandwiched him in a cocoon of warmth and protectiveness. He had absolutely refused to get up and faked sleep until Shivaay and Omkara had gotten up and left the room, not before placing a gentle kiss on his temples.

He snapped out of his reverie when he felt his phone violently vibrate in his pocket. Rudra groaned and resisted the urge to face palm. He had totally forgotten about her!

"I'll be back in a minute, Bhaiya." Rudra smiled coyly and rushed out of the room before Shivaay could start to object.

He swiftly dodged the guests and hid himself behind a pillar before picking up his phone. He grinned fondly when the expected chide blared through the speakers.

"Listen up Duffer Singh Oberoi!" The familiar voice of his Soumya shrilled out. "What's with you calling me in the break of dawn and demanding me to let you use my stuff?!"

When Rudra's only reply was to break down into laughter, Soumya huffed fondly before continuing in a softer tone. "Really now, who are you planning to play a prank on?"

"Someone who really deserves it, Somu." Rudra could practically feel Soumya melt at the nickname. He recalled fondly how she had given him the terror kit she had used against him as a souvenir before leaving for Australia.

He had kept it safe along with Om's first drawing for him and Shivaay Bhaiya's fitness band. The sticky notes and the tools had come in handy to sabotage any sneaky plans Chote Maa had brewed in her head.

"Rudra..."He heard Soumya sigh softly.

God, he really missed her! Rudra gave the phone a bittersweet smile. "I really gotta be going now. I'll call you later, okay?"

"Yeah, sure..." Soumya sighed in a put out manner. "Goodbye, Rudra. Love you..."

Rudra gulped down the lump forming in his throat. "Yeah...Goodbye, Somu."

Soumya shook her head before dropping the call. "He's still such a child..." She smiled and made a move to get up from the balcony rails of her room. What she didn't expect was the moist floor in the wet dew and almost lost her footing. She gripped the rails and flinched at the sound of her mobile shattering on the floor.

She slowly got down once she felt her heart was beating right again. That was a close call. She sent a quick prayer to whatever God that had been looking out for her and moved over to pick her mobile up. Soumya blinked when her to-be shattered mobile was nowhere in sight.

She gulped and slowly took a peep at the ground, four floors below her. And there was her mobile, in a mess of battery and broken glasses, all over the skylight of the veranda.

Soumya swallowed heavily and slowly slid down to rest on the cold floor. A strange sense of trepidation overwhelmed her heart. A voice echoed in her head and it took her a moment to realize that weight of what Rudra had told her.

'Goodbye, Somu...'

______________________________________________________________________________

Rudra smiled in contentment as he felt Chote Maa's glare on him. So, she had indeed been planning a fake suicide all along. Rudra smirked remembering how he had snooped around and sabotaged every tool he could find. His 'How to suicide 101 ways' book took all the credits.

His Bhaiya and Bhabhi were officially tying the knot for the whole world to see and nobody could break them apart now. He smiled and looked around to see the elated face of Shivaay and the pleased look on Om. Rudra frowned when a certain someone was nowhere in sight and he slowly walked away from the crowd and towards Om's room. His Chulbul Bhabhi was missing...

He breathed a sigh of relief when he saw his Bhabhi in a gorgeous satin lehenga, sitting in front of the mirror with his back to him. Rudra's forehead wrinkled as he observed her. Her lush hair was all over the place and she seemed to be frantically looking at something in the phone.

Rudra slowly walked towards her and placed a hand on her shoulders. He quickly swooped down to catch the phone when Gauri flinched and accidently dropped it.

"What are you doing, Bhabhi? Shouldn't you be-" Rudra stopped when he looked at the video buffering in the mobile. A tutorial, to be exact. A 'How to do a mermaid braid?' video.

"Bhabhi, what is this?" Rudra softly questioned. He could feel a wave of sadness wash over him as his delicate Bhabhi's shoulders drooped in defeat.

"It's a tutorial, Rudy Bhaiya". She gave him a watery smile. "It makes you look, you know, more stylish and..." Rudra held his breath as he heard Gauri's voice break. He heard what had happened at the exhibition Om hosted. He had felt absolutely disgusted at the prospect of other women commenting on his Bhabhi's dressing sense.

He had thought that Om would have pacified her or his Chulbul Bhabhi would have shoved the comment outside the window. But he could see the damage it had done to her morale. He knew without a doubt that his Bhabhi was strong willed and held tons of self-esteem. But it was never about her. It was about Om...

"It's better if I stay here until Omkara ji's associates leave". She sighed softly and sat down in front of the mirror with her head bowed.

Rudra breathed down to cool his temper. "I guess you are right, Bhabhi". He cringed at the sad and betrayed eyes that snapped at him.

"If you go out there with that lush Bareilly hair of yours, then O would have to go from being the groomsman to a watchman". He grinned at the look of perplexity on his Bhabhi's face. She was so cute.

"Yes, Bhabhi!" He insisted playfully and made her sit back on the chair. "Here." He said as he cautiously pushed her bangs behind her ears and clipped a hair chain on it. "Now, that artificial clip would lessen your natural beauty a little bit and save you from all the men waiting below."

He dusted his hands as if accomplishing a great feat. "Now my Chulbul Bhabhi, since I've done my task of protecting you from the envious eyes of those so-called beauties down there, you are free to make your dramatic entry."

He squeaked in surprise when an emotional Gauri pulled him into a tight hug. He quickly recovered and hugged back just as tight. However, in his haste to console his Chulbul Bhabhi, he had failed to notice Pinky Singh Oberoi smirk at the pair and slip past the room.

______________________________________________________________________________

Om smiled softly as guest one after the other blessed the lovely pair and gushed over them. He revelled at the look of utter serenity on Dadi's face. Chote Papa looked proud of his son. His own mom and Mr. Oberoi were nowhere in sight. Om grimaced. It was Peter D'Souza now. Who was that man trying to fool?

Soft murmurs suddenly erupted around the room. Om frowned at the guests turning towards the stairs. What in the world had drawn their attention-?

Om started, transfixed as he felt the world around him fade into oblivion and his focus attune on the goddess slowly climbing down the stairs. Words failed him as his hand subconsciously reached out to her. The lehenga did no justice to the beauty that was Gauri. He felt Gauri take a hold of his hand and smile gracefully at him. It was the closest thing to perfection he had seen thus far.

"Omkara ji..." He saw Gauri mutter through her luscious rosy lips.

"Um..." Omkara swallowed thickly, his throat suddenly very dry. "Where were you?" He croaked out uneasily.

"I was with-"

A soft shuffle alerted the two towards the door. Om immediately let go of Gauri and turned to face a frantically approaching Khanna.

"What's wrong?"

"It's terrible". Khanna started as he struggled to catch his breath.

Before Omkara could question him further, he saw the crowd scurrying outside. He noticed Shivaay and Anika follow suite. What was going on? Omkara's trail of thoughts came to an abrupt halt. He frantically looked around. Pinky Singh Oberoi was gone and so was Rudra.

"SHIVAAY!" That sounded like Chote Maa. But why did that sound like it came from some floors above. Dread overtook his heart and Omkara sprinted outside to join Shivaay who was sending vicious death glares at someone above.

And sure enough, there she stood, his Chote Maa on the edge of the topmost balcony, her torso leaning over the rails with a mocking smile on her face and a mad gleam in her eyes.

"DON'T YOU DARE?!" Shivaay bellowed beside him, his voice trembling with fury.

"I dare..." Pinky smirked calmly. "If this is what I had to do to get rid of that filth from taking your name, then I dare, I DARE!" Pinky screeched back like a deranged harpy.

"MRS PINKY SINGH OBEROI! "Shivaay's voice reached new octaves as he made a move to march inside the house when a delicate hand stopped him.

His eyes followed the tender hand gripping his own to travel across a bangle adorned arm to a chiselled jaw and finally to land on the tear filled eyes of his Anika.

"Shivaay, please..."She hiccupped softly.

"Anika..." Shivaay slowly reached out to cup her face. "Listen to me, Anika..." he hissed desperately. "Don't mind-"

"I'll give you a minute!" Pinky interrupted them. "One minute, Shivaay!" She pointed one finger at him. "It's either me or her..."

"PINKY!" For the first time since Shivaay had known him, Shakti Singh Oberoi roared at his wife in disgust and rage. "Have you gone completely mad? Shivaay's our son! What is the matte-"

"No, Shakti ji, No. He hadn't been our son from the day this low class urchin crawled into our house!" Pinky turned her glare towards Shivaay. "Well? You time's up! Who is it gonna be Shivaay?!"

And Anika looked on with grief as the love of her life broke in front of him. Shivaay, for everything Pinky had put him through, still loved her. He had hoped that Pinky would start to accept them, accept Anika, for him, her only son. The Haldi had given him false hope and Shivaay regretted the fact that he had thought there was any good in his mother at all.

He blinked when he felt Anika gently cup his tear-stained face. "I know you love me Shivaay." She smiled at him. "And this very truth would feed me for a lifetime."

Shivaay closed his eyes, willing his heart to stop right there and put him out of his misery. He felt Anika lean her forehead against his own.

"Shivaay, I-I l-lov..."

And before he knew it, Shivaay's eyes snapped open and they were staring deep into each other's soul. And then, without a word, Anika pushed off him and slowly began to walk away from him.

Suddenly, she jerked when she felt something pull her from behind. She turned around to see her bracelet caught up with Shivaay's cuff links. Anika and Shivaay stared at their interlocked hands for what seemed to be the last time.

"That's enough drama from you! GET OUT!" Pinky shrieked from the balcony. To be honest, she was scared; she didn't do well with heights. This was her trump card for she knew that everyone in the house believed the balcony to be locked for years and the keys lost.

The balcony was deemed dangerous for the winds blew hard and could almost trip a full grown man over. Today was no exception. She could feel the rattle of the polyester curtains behind her. She couldn't wait to get back to the safety of her room. Pinky smiled as she saw Anika try and pull her bracelet off. This will teach them never to challenge Pinky Singh Oberoi. She had done it.

"Chote Maa's right. No PDA in the public, Bhabhi." Pinky froze and so did the rest of the crowd. A hushed silence fell across the place and Pinky slowly turned towards her far left.

"At least not in front of the guests, Bhabhi." Anika inhaled sharply while Shivaay and Om screamed and almost pulled their hairs out in terror.

For there, sitting on the rails with his legs thrown over the edge and swinging playfully to and fro and his thighs hovering over nothing with only his hands gripping the rails for support was none other than their baby brother, Rudra.

I was literally 'over the edge' while reading this, so frightened that I couldn't even focus,
It startled with a playful tone and then I went through dozens of emotion while reading it and ending while having tears, now that's what I call a fabulously written piece, very intriguing and captivating writing style
Loved it
Very eager to know how Rudy will end up in a deadly state.
Pinky is completely inhuman, forget about being a mother

Will be waiting eagerly for next update,
Much love!
