||CHAPTER-7||
Jhanvi hummed to herself as she, along with Tej, waited for their ride back home. Now that the whole Svetlana drama had been done and dusted, Jhanvi couldn't wait to restart her life with her reformed husband and her kids.
Omkara was going to be so happy. Svetlana was a poison ivy and escaping from her evil clutches alive and without scars could be considered a miracle in itself. And the best thing to come out of it was Tej's transformation.
He had faced the beast behind the beauty; had realized how much he had fallen in his family's eyes and now he was ready to pay his dues.
Jhanvi smiled beamingly at Tej who was looking impatiently at his watch. She almost giggled when her eyes landed on the parcel in his other hand.
"You do realize that our Rudra would have already tasted that, Tej." She smiled, gesturing to the parcel which held a bottle of the traditionally brewed Feni.
"He didn't seem to recall its name when I mentioned it." Tej gruffly replied. Jhanvi sighed. Tej was guilty and he definitely had the right to be. Tej and Omkara's relation had been strained from the start.
When Rudra came into their life, Tej didn't even attempt to try and forge a bond between them.
Jhanvi recalled that it had been the straight opposite. Tej had tried his best to ignore his youngest; he had even completely overlooked his duties as a father. And then the day happened when Rudra had uttered his first word.
Jhanvi grimaced at the memory. Tej had been looking for an important document in his study; a survey presentation for a new branch of the Oberoi industries.
He had literally tore down the whole room when little Rudra came toddling in with the document with crayon doodles all over it.
It was the first time Tej had raised his hand against his children. The four year old Rudra had quivered at the gesture and in a fit of fear, he screamed aloud. 'PAPA!'
And Jhanvi knew that Tej regretted that day; he despised the fact that the word that most fathers' yearned to hear from their children had slipped out of his boy's mouth out of fear and not out of love.
And it was then the biggest hit to his parenthood came. Shivaay, who had heard the commotion from the living room, had rushed in and immediately scooped the crying babe into his arms. And it was then that Tej realized that Rudra had called Shivaay as 'Papa' and not him.
Tej had believed that he had lost his youngest too. She remembered how Tej had cancelled his meetings for a week and had holed up in his room, refusing to entertain any company.
And on the third day, when Shivaay and Omkara had been out, little Rudra had toddled up to his room. The child had relentlessly knocked the door until Tej had opened it and when he did, Rudra had wrapped his chubby hands around the man's legs, uttering a cute 'Owy Papa'.
Tej had warmed up to Rudra from then on. He also refused to pull Rudra into business or pressurize him into studying. He had given Rudra his leeway. And the boy, he still addressed him as his Papa even after his disgusting escapade with Svetlana. And he also knew where Rudra came, Omkara followed. He was the glue to their relationship.
"Mind a few miles away, Jhanvi?" Jhanvi blinked, coming out of her revere. Their car had come and Tej was holding his hand out to her. "Let's go back to our family. Rudra must be raiding my study with his big boy crayons by now and Omkara must be a minute away from throwing a hissy fit."
Jhanvi smiled as she held on to his hands tight. "Yes. Let us."

Shivaay continued to stare at Anika who was leaning over the rails and screaming her heart out at something. He turned to his left to see Om clutching his heart and then running towards the rails. He turned to his right to see his so-called mother collapse to her knees in a sobbing mess. What had happened?
'Shivaay...'
Someone was calling him.
'Shivaay, please...'
Someone was gripping his arms, hard.
"SHIVAAY!"
Shivaay snapped out of his stupor and came face to face with a sobbing Anika who continued to violently shake him
"What's wrong with you Shivaay?!" She continued to weep as she shook him, "He's crashed on the skylight! Hurry up, Shivaay!"
Shivaay blinked at her. "W-w-who?"
Anika stared at him, shocked for a moment. "Shivaay, Rudr..."
And then it hit him like a train. HIS RUDR!
Shivaay gasped a lungful of air at the sudden numbness against his chest. He pushed against Anika and continued to stumble towards the lowest balcony only to stop on noticing a near crazy Om loudly banging against the closed doors.
"Who had closed these doors?!" Om screamed as he proceeded to run his fist against the hardwood. "Dammit!"
"Om, move! "Shivaay hollered before rushing at the door with all his might. The bars barely gave away.
"On the count of three, boys!" Shivaay and Om stared at Shakti for a brief second before nodding their heads.
"It's not even bulging an inch!" Shivaay pulled at his hair in frustration. "Who had sealed it this tight?!"
"Does it matter?!" Om screamed right back at him. He saw Gauri approach him from the corner of his eyes. "Is the ambulance here?"
At her nervous and desperate glance, he felt his temper rise. "Well?!" He barked out loud.
He ignored her flinch. "Omkara-ji, I-I couldn't-"
"-get the number." Omkara finished for her.
He glared her down. How stupid can she be? He mentally sneered. "You don't NEED a brain to know the emergency number." He spat at her in disgust, ignoring the way she deflated in front of him.
"The bolt's coming off, Om!"
Giving her one last loathsome look, Om turned towards the door and gave it one last push. They heard the bolt come off and the door open only to stop halfway. "Huh?"
"Shivaay, someone has roped the door from the other side with a chain". And Shivaay squinted through the open gap to see a thick chain loop over the handles of the intricate door. 'Fhat the wuck?!'
"If I may be excused, Sir..." Before either Shivaay or Om could blink, a sharp axe point swished past them, breaking the chain in one thundering blow. The room's occupants gaped at Khanna who innocently held on to the now-broken axe.
Shivaay did a small mental victory dance and nodded at Khanna before pushing the door wide open. Time seemed to stop as Shivaay stared. He missed the way Om crashed on to him or how Anika and Gauri inhaled sharply in horror.
His world zeroed in on his baby brother lying in a pool of his own blood; his face deadly pale and his body seizure in pain.
He felt his feet mechanically take him towards the scene that he had prayed to never even dream of in his worst nightmare. He stopped when a sharp crinkle reached his ears. His eyes travelled down to the blood stained glass to note the fine, spidery cracks.
"Rudr..." He heard Om choke out beside him.
"Om." Shivaay croaked as he slowly fell to his knees. "Om, the glass is starting to break; we got to get him out of there..."
He heard Om hiss softly before getting on his knees beside him. Shivaay bit the insides of his mouth from sobbing right away. His baby brother was a few feet away and Shivaay's and Om's fingers barely brushed against Rudr. If only he would wake up and reach out to them.
"Rudr... "Shivaay pushed through the lump in his throat. "Rudr, please wake up..."
"Rudr, please." Om parroted on. "Wake up and give us your hand and then you can sleep all you want. Shivaay Bhaiya and O won't bother you for the whole day."
But Rudra seemed to ignore them. He seemed to be deadly still, his face turned and away from them. His sunshine was fading. And Shivaay sobbed as he screamed out to his brother. He felt Om's body tremble against him; felt two different pair of hands hold his shoulders in a comforting grip but nothing gave him the comfort he needed; only his Rudra could give him.
___________________________________________________________________________
He always wondered what flying felt like. He had once begged his Shivaay Bhaiya to take him Bungee jumping. That was the first request from him that his Bhaiya had vehemently denied. He had shrugged it off and had offhandedly commented on going out with his friends someday.
Rudra still fondly remembered how his Bhaiya had bristled up like a Billu and had seized his mobile. Rudra had found himself grounded for the whole month.
Rudra almost smiled at the cloudy sky before him as he let the wind rush past his ears. He felt weightless against the air whizzing by; his hair flowing in black tendrils around his head. For a moment, he felt a strange peace surmount him and he had the urge to relax and give in to the flow.
And then the feeling came to an abrupt halt with a resounding crack. He more than felt his body hit a solid ground and bounce back an inch and his spine arch on force of the impact before sprawling out on the floor again.
The agony was instantaneous, sudden and sharp. Rudra felt his body involuntarily tremble and spasm under the sudden assault of pain from broken bones and torn muscles; he felt his punctured lungs burning for air and his chest hurting with the strain of breathing.
For what felt like eternity, he laid there wondering perhaps this was all a dream. And that's when he heard it. A faint yell and then the world seemed to blur as he saw his brothers a few feet away from him.
His Shivaay Bhaiya and O were reaching out to him. Rudra smiled as he felt his eyelids grow heavy.
"B-bhai..."
Shivaay's focus immediately snapped towards his brother. His heart soared when his kanji eyes met a pair of glazed, almond ones.
"Rudra!" Shivaay hastily wiped his tears and balanced his left hand against the glass as he reached out as much as he could towards Rudra's yearning hand.
Rudra giggled as he saw his brother's finger reach out to his own and immediately grimaced when his body started to violently wrack in coughs and a rush of warm, coppery blood gushed past his lips and oozed down his cheeks.
Was he dying? He better hoped he was not or he wouldn't hear the end of it from his brothers if he broke their Obros code. Rudra gazed lovingly back at them and smiled at the beautiful vision he was presented with.
His Bhabhi was holding onto his Bhaiya for support as he tried to pull him towards them but the best of them all was his Chote Maa with her hands on both Shivaay Bhaiya and Anika Bhabhi's shoulders. They were finally together...
Rudra felt a soft, bittersweet sob wrack his frame. It was so beautiful; so beautiful that it hurts! And he shamelessly let hot tears stream down his cheeks as he gave them one bright smile.
"There! "He heard his Shivaay Bhaiya give out a hearty laugh as he wrapped his index finger around Rudra's pinky finger.
"S-see Ru, l-look here." Shivaay pointed at their linked fingers. "Bhaiya got you, sunshine. Don't cry!" He smiled to put on a brave faade. "Bhaiya won't let go. Don't be scared!"
And Shivaay held his breath as he heard the glass crack more; saw the light in his baby's eyes grow dim; felt the grip on his finger go lax and the bright, serene smile Rudra flashed at him that said, 'Good bye.'
"N-no no no no no nooo...!" Om screamed in anguish and leapt towards Rudra as the glass finally gave out only to be held back by Gauri.
"LET ME GO! "He screamed and pushed off her and rushed towards the veranda. He jumped through half the stairs and rushed to his baby brother's side. He collapsed to his feet and almost gagged at the sight. Shreds of glass had torn into his skin but Om stared in horror at the single piece of glass the stuck to his throat.
FLASH!
He had stepped on a photo frame; a photo frame with the three of the together. And now, a side of it was broken.
Om's fingers trembled as he moved the broken pieces away from his baby brother's face. Rudra's side of the frame was crushed and a long piece of glass had itself logged right in his throat clearly beheading his brother.
FLASH!
His hand's trembled as he carefully balanced the prone body of his baby brother. His Rudra. His always smiling, carefree duffer. His light.
He cried out in despair and scrambled to reach out to him as paramedics rushed and snatched him from his hands. He desperately held on to the warm arms of Gauri encircled around his neck and screamed at the Gods looking down on them in anguish just as a sharp crack of lightning lit the sky.
The memory of his baby brother, broken and covered in blood with his arms limply hanging out to him, was etched in his memory forever.
And all through this, Shivaay sat and stared down the now broken skylight as Anika clung onto him and sobbed into his shoulders.
He clutched his aching heart and silently told himself that as long as Om and Shivaay were alive, so was his Rudra. For the Obros never broke their code.
Never.
