Part 2

Shivaay was telling Khanna to keep a close eye on Romi, when he turned and saw Annika getting ready. She was a sight to behold. She reminded him of how she looked at their own wedding, simply stunning despite the tragedy in her eyes. He watched as she struggled with a decision.

Whether she should put on the sindhoor or not?

Her eyes were puffy from all that crying last night. He had stood nearby the whole time she cried, taking in her agony as his own. Yes, she cared. A lot. Perhaps even more than he did.

He stared hard at her. Hypnotized, she gently marked her the tip of her forehead with vermillion. His eyes fixed on hers, she reached for the wedding chain, shivering to fasten it. She was finding it a struggle to put it on, he could see it. Why bother, when this is all going to end soon? It's not like anyone is going to notice I'm not wearing it.

Shivaay stepped up to catch the chain as it fell. It matters to me that you wear it. It's the only thing that binds me to you right now. And I want it that way. It's fated, you can't escape it. You can't just walk away, because there's this chain that binds you to me. Until I have the words to give you. This, gives me time.

He steadily fastened the chain around her neck. Looking deeply into her eyes, he wanted her to see, there was no hiding.

I am tying this ceremonial chain around your neck. Because I want to. This is our union. You can't leave me. I won't let you.

She turned around to him, her feelings about to tumble out , like the surface tension of her tears about to fall. He couldn't let her crumble now, so close to the end of their mission. She needs to stay in character.

"No, Annika. It's too late for that now..." Later, Annika. Later. There's all the time for this later. I promise.

He watched as she struggled for composure, and his mom walks in with Om and Rudra. More taunting, and his brothers grit their teeth in irritation. Annika gave him one last look, Here goes nothing... and she left.

He glanced at his brothers. Now, let's get this show on the road.

Shivaay sat at the mandap grimly.

This is it, he thought. The plan was coming to the summit. Om and him shared a look and an imperceptible nod. Looking at Rudra, he struggled to keep his poker face on, because the fellow was positively shivering with excitement, he can barely contain it. Om rolled his eyes heavenward and shook his head.

Turning to Dadi, Shivaay sobered. Dadi was looking at him speculatively, steadfast by Annika's side. Badi Ma too stood glumly with her, obviously not happy with what was happening. His mom, however, made a fool of herself flitting from one guest to another, totally immersed in her happiness for the union of ,God forbid, Shi-Tia...

He scratched an absent itch on his forehead and shook his head. Tia appeared with her mother, in full finery. The atmosphere thickened with anticipation, half happy , half with determination.

Game on, guys. Let's pack this up.

***

Hours later...

Annika ran away from the hall, where all the chaos had unravelled. She stepped into Shivaay's room, feeling cold all over, tired to the bone. Of the pretense, the acting, the little line she had been balancing on the whole time. Wondering which parts were part of the plan, or were genuine. Which words were real , which were just pretend. I am just so tired.

Today, she was thrown out of the house by Shivaay. Yes, she needed to get out of the house undetected, so she can go get Dushyant. They needed Mrs. Kapoor fully distracted so she could do that.

But the emotional girl deep inside couldn't pack away the cruelty with which he executed it. He dragged her across the hall , in front of everyone, and threw her onto the floor outside the house, yelled at the top of his voice. Her ears were still ringing with the cruelty.

You and me, WE'RE OVER !

She shut her eyes.

Annika, he was pretending. Try to understand. Come on.

But it hurt. It didn't make sense that she was hurt. She couldn't push it away. In anger she tore at her jewelry, pulling them all out and throwing them at Shivaay's dresser. She pulled at the pins in her hair, making her hair tumble out in a fiery mess. The sindhoor red color mocking her, shining on top of her jet black hair.

She smudged at it with needless violence. Sha hated the wedding clothes too. Tearing at it, she took it off and wore her own clothes. Feeling outwardly like herself again, she sat fuming by the poolside, the moonlight silence calming her frayed nerves.

She felt his presence behind her like a ghost.

"Bohot gussa hai mujhpe?" Shivaay said softly. She refused to look at him, instead just a deep sigh and an inaudible Hmmm.

"Annika..." he appealed for her understanding. She pursed her lips and maintained her silence. He tried picking up her hands but she slipped them away. He met her cold silence with his own stubborn insistence. Tired of struggling to keep her hands to herself, she moved to leave, only to have his hand blocking her exit.

"We talk, when we have problems, Annika... Talk to me." his soft tone was in contrast to the stubbornness refusal to let her leave.

She turned her back to him, and she actually felt him seethe. Before he could grab her hand and turn her back, she took a few steps out of his reach.

"You enjoyed it all, didn't you? Torturing me?"

"What torture?" he replied innocently.

She turned onto him with full rage.

"You enjoy presenting big huge rings to Tia , don't you? Big, grand gestures , compliments on her beauty , Your "Dil" in a diamond ring box worth many lakhs."

He smiled slightly at her jealousy coming at him in spades. That, was a worse thing to do at that moment.

"You find it funny? Really? You think I want a diamond ring from you? I don't. And what about all the times you held her hand, blew in her ears, put your hands all over her, huh? What?"

When he still couldn't stop smiling, she pushed him hard, and he stumbled backwards a few steps.

"And when you had her massage your head, how were you appreciating it? Her hands had magic , yes? Magic?! Oh, magic ki bacchi! I'll take that magic and stuff it in your mouth, and see if you can smile then. Feeling really smug about yourself aren't you? Huh?!" she continued to rant angrily, advancing forward as he retreated step by step , leading her a certain direction.

"How did you dance with her? Your hands were EVERYWHERE ?!! Why did I have to see all that? You think this is FUNNY??"

He tried to make a poker face but failed miserably. He had been dying to see this response all of the last few days, and felt ridiculously elated that he was not wrong about how she felt about him at all. That sweet victorious smile, earned him a punch in the chest. It knocked a cough out of him, surprised at its strength. She does not punch like a girl. There's a lot more strength where that came from.

Bam! Came another punch. That one hurt. He caught the next one and trapped both her arms. They were in each other's faces with an intensity.

"Faraq padra hai , Annika?" he drawled. The answering violence in her eyes was a little scary and he surprised her by turning her around and backing her against the wall behind him.

He was only using enough force to keep her from hitting him, and frustrated tears started to well in her eyes.

"Do you care, Annika?" he repeated and watched for her answer intensely. A mute but heavily distressed Annika stared back at him.

Leaning into her, he blew roughly into her ears. Static electricity , travelled through her entire nervous system making her shiver, she let out a jerky gasp and turned her face away from him. He grazed her smooth cheek with his beard, letting the tip of his nose nuzzle hers.

She was having trouble breathing, and kept her eyes closed.

"Annika..." an urgent whisper , deceptively soft, demanded her answer. He pressed his lips to her temple. "Answer me..." his voice low and tremulous. He continued to press small kisses in a line, and she still refused to open her eyes.

"I'd buy a whole jewellery store for you, Annika.." he whispered and Annika made an unpleasant face.

"I don't want anything from you." she bit out angrily and stormed out of the room.

Later, at dinner, thanks to Rudra and Omkara, the family was in a celebratory mood, because they had united and saved each other yet again, as a team. Annika was properly thanked for her important role, and she blushed with all the appreciation but refused to look his way.

Even Mom, had grudgingly admitted what a fool she had been made of by Tia and her family. But graciously the family forgave her innocently cantankerous nature. She had truly thought Tia was the best for Shivaay, as he himself had trumpeted it aloud for the last 3 years.

Finally, Rudra came to him and whispered, "Is Billi fighting with her Billuji again huh?" he asked with a snigger. Om joined in and replied, "It's kinda obvious Rudra, if she rolls her eyes one more time at the mention of Shivaay's name, her eyes will tumble out loose!" he laughed, exchanging a high5 with Rudra.

" If you guys are done laughing at me, can we please focus at the problem?"

"What IS the problem, Bhaiya? How did you manage to fight with Bhabhi so quickly?"

"She thinks I went overboard with my acting during my fake wedding to Tia..."

"Hmmm... I see. Big engagement ring, announcement, engagement, compliments, photoshoots, swing ritual, gifts, mehendi, Sangeet, walking under flower petal shower, Lady Baba's reiki and head massage and Jagrata. And Bhabhi had gone straight to the mandap under a ghunghat. "

"Yes, thanks Rudra for that helpful bucketful of salt in the wound."

"Then you had to drag her and throw her out like that after signing divorce papers in her face. Yeah, I can see why you're her favourite person right now."

Shivaay's face had taken a glum look and the brothers took pity on him.

"Relax Bhaiya! OmRu is here! You'll make it up to Bhabhi right?"

The two then spent the rest of the evening well-meaningly pushing them together. Annika was increasingly irritated and Shivaay just plain awkward. Pinky wanted to interfere, but Dadi stopped her.

"These two are extremely private about their relationship. Their ishqbaazi is intense but not for the public to see. Look right now, you think they are fighting right? Look carefully, Pinky"

As the two older women watched, Shivaay rubbed his forehead as though he was having a headache, while Annika watched. When she suddenly got up to leave, he jumped up and stood in her way. What ensued was a silent contest of who got their way, Annika tried to slip sideways but lost balance and almost fell, but was caught by Shivaay. Bristling at the contact, she tried to push his hands off, but he sternly frowned at her. She frowned right back, and rolled her eyes at him, successfully evading him. He turned and watched her walk out of the living room before mumbling under his breath.

A few minutes later, she marched right back and put a couple of tablets beside him with a glass of water. He stared at her mutinously and tried to take her hand again, but she still refused , going diametrically opposite to sit with Dadi.

"Silly man. Trying to be a martyr and suffering through a headache. Bhagad Billa..." she mumbled under her breath, and both the older women stifled a laugh at them. Pinky and Dadi shared a smile and a wink.

The family grapevine found out early the next morning, that Annika had spent the night in Prinku's room, and Shivaay had been standing outside knocking every few minutes for some excuse or another. Finally at midnight, the extremely genteel Prinku had lost her temper and slammed the door shut after what was the loudest scolding she had ever spoken to her eldest brother.

Annika was shocked when she came down for breakfast and found the hall decked with fresh roses. All the bouquets were addressed to Annika and it had filled all the surfaces of the room. Finally the man himself appeared in a powder blue suit, stood in the middle of the hall, grabbing the attention of the entire family who had gathered.

"Annika..." he called out to her grandly. "today in front of my family, I would like you accept your place as my wife." Leading the stunned girl to sit in a chair at the center, he stood by as Dadi came, kissed her cheeks and gave her the ornate bangles that were her gift for the wedding. Next Pinky came with a beaming smile, presented the ancestral necklace for the Oberoi Bahu, and put it on her neck. Jhanvi aunty draped a gold thread embroidered ornate shawl over Annika's head. One by one, each smiling Oberoi came with their gifts for their newest member of their family.

Annika's eyes glistened at the grand gesture. She felt sorry for making such a fuss, she didn't mean to demand so much attention. After everyone was done, Shivaay walked up to her, pulled her to stand. He took out a branded jeweller's ring box from his jacket pocket and opened it to reveal the most beautiful diamond ring she had ever seen.

One look in her wide eyes, and he knew she thought it was too grand. Smiling with his eyes, he took her hand and slipped the ring on her finger, as the family clapped happily around them.

"Welcome home, Annika Shivaay Singh Oberoi..." he whispered, as she blinked, overwhelmed. The family was so happy , but soon they started moving towards the breakfast table, leaving them alone. Pinky and Dadi peeked at them from the dining hall, and they saw Shivaay look at her with the softest look in his eyes, wiped all her tears away and engulfed her into his embrace. Happy with the sight, they left the two to themselves.

"You didn't have to do all this, Shivaay. All I wanted was some time to myself." Annika said softly. "The past few weeks was too much drama for me. My mind was so cluttered, I just needed some time alone. I'm so sorry you had to do all this. I..."

"Time to yourself? Why? You better get used to me , Annika. Because I'm not going to let you go anywhere away from me. Whatever it is, no matter what, you deal with it, with me, against me, whatever. But we talk. I cannot bear silent treatments from you, do not do this to me. I adore you, Annika. " he said this and put his forehead upon hers, closing his eyes because the feelings became too much.

He felt her hands go around his body as she hugged him back tightly. She burrowed her head in his neck and she sniffed.

" I love you too Shivaay...Thank you. For sharing your family with me." and they stood like that for awhile, neither wanting to break the proximity.
