Chapter TwoOmkara knew that he was going to reveal more things than he ever wanted if he kept talking to Trishna like this. She always managed to make bring him out of his detachment and disconnect with the rest of the world. It was something which only his brothers, Priyanka, Dadi or his mother, Jhanvi if ever she had tried to do apart from boozing away; had the ability of doing.
Now that he thought about it, he realized that he was giving her too much of himself. Whether she knew it or realized it, he couldn't tell. But he could feel it himself. Putting yourself and your heart in somebody's protection was the most dangerous thing to do.
They could play whatever tunes they wanted with it, twist its strings as they pleased, cut them off these strings if they irritated them. He was afraid of giving an outsider so much power over him. She herself had asked him not to come to her father's. It was also good in a way because now he was no longer to blame for anything.
Snapping back to the present, Omkara said, "Why don't you leave me in peace? Why do you keep pestering me? You didn't want me to come again to your father's place, I won't!"
Trishna said, "That did not mean that I wanted you to stop talking to me or being my friend. Plants don't grow beside a big banyan tree. That was how it was becoming with you and Papa. I wanted you to make your own name and career. You are the best and deserve the best."
Omkara replied, "You can't decide each and everything yourself. I decide what is important for me. It's my life!"
Trishna, her voice choking up, "Oh! So it's your life and I have no right to speak or care. Alright have it your way. I won't speak to you."
Omkara banged his foot against the wall. She always managed to gain the upper hand over him in all their arguments. The very fact that she cared for him gave her a strange power over him. Omkara spoke in a slightly softened tone, "I did not exactly mean what I spoke but ..."
Trishna continued, "You know, you and my father are the most complicated individuals I know. I always fail to make head or tail out of what you two say or do. Both of you keep saying that you hate lies and falsehood the most but fail to see the most obvious truths or pretend as if the very truths of your existence are nonexistent!"
Omkara knew that now things were getting serious. She was probably pained by his remarks that she had no right to interfere in his life. He said, "Alright don't get angry! It was just a slip of a tongue.I didn't mean what I spoke. Where can we meet up?"
Trishna said,"You generally speak what is there in your mind. I know you. You're not Trishna to speak things which you don't mean. You either don't speak or you speak very less; and you mean everything that you speak. I know you."
Omkara was surprised at himself. Yes! She was right. It was so not him. It was like her. He was becoming like her.
Trishna gave an ultimatum, "You told that you didn't want to meet me or speak to me. I'm telling you now and I mean every bit of it; if you fail to find out where I am and speak to me before 6 tomorrow evening, I will not speak to you or talk to you again in my life. I will not tell you anything about where I am. If you really care about me, you will discover me."
She held up the phone with that threat hanging over his head. Omkara knew that he had to find her out before six tomorrow evening. He would do it at all costs. He began his search for her immediately. He knew that she was not at her house. Then where else could she be? He went to all her favorite places, places where both of them shared beautiful memories with each other.
He searched for her in her favourite seat in the Chinese restaurant, in the beach where she witnessed the beautiful sunrise every morning, the Shiva temple where she lit 108 diyas every Monday, at her college with her friends, at the old age home and orphanage where she usually went to spend some time with those who had none of their own or those whom their own had disowned or forsaken. Time was running out. She was not to be found in any of these places.
