IKRS Monday 8th February 2016 ep 158 My Take the clay cat outweighs the gold cat
In taxing traumatic times many turn to their faiths and believes to draw personal and emotional strength. Apart from their personal deity , to have ones loved ones close by, also helps to alleviate the personal crisis. The episode shows Dhani in a sticky situation. We see how her personal faith equips her to fight injustice and how her ever present loved ones help her to cross the sea of insurmountable torrents.
At the end of the day her goddess Tulsi is there to listen to Dhani's plight. However during the end of the day prayers Dhani tries though she may, but cannot rid herself of emotional baggage heaped on her heart and mind by Phool Chand's accusations of killing a cat that she often fed before , but today..? she recalls even though vakeel babu said it was an accident . May well have been ? but she ends up being the one who killed a cat and the one to be punished with something which is beyond their means and next to impossible. Still apart from the punishment, lies the restlessness in Dhani that the truth is she hadn't killed the cat. Thank god for mothers ,hers turns up ! just when Dhani needs her ! spontaneously Dhani cries out to her , she has to believe her she didn't kill the cat. Dulari consoles her , things happen can't be helped , but pity it happened on her birthday ... but don't give it much thought, as, if she's upset as her mother she too gets upset..just go to bed, dulari recommends. Dhani replies she will after she's turned out the lights.. was the cat sent by providence to protect Dhani from her death? looks like it. For the truthful and pious there is no shortage of supporters, and as soon as her mother leaves. The one closest to Dhani's heart phones to see if all is well..yes nani suddenly got ill , but she's fine now. Viplav teases her ,and you thought it's all due to the cat dying! What did they say, the cat's curse.. look Dhani it was merely an accident .besides he's had a word with dadi she says, she'll get a gold cat made and you can give that in the mandir, says Viplav offering easy solutions ,but Dhani declines the idea as before, noo why should he have to pay for something she's done and he argues, because now she's his responsibility! the idea is that they'll share all the suffering, sorrows between each other! besides if he doesn't help her ,where is she going to get the cat from pray tell me?off handed Dhani him politely vakeel babu , better not get involved in such affairs it doesn't seem right. But then Viplav is no young Charlie either to be fobbed off by her weak excuses. Look Dhani what's not right is upon one cat's death , forcing people to offer a cat of gold to the temple ,as its replacement! Viplav attempts to steer Dhani towards the key issue of injustices aimed at the susceptible and vulnerable, but Dhani fears and he bucks her up , why is she afraid? She shouldn't be ,as its only a minor issue! listen to him , he's saying all will be well ..ok! and they end the call. For him it me be a minor issue as he has the money to produce the pricey cat.. but not for the widows of the ashram..
Kanak watches like an evil black cat ,as the widows all pool whatever they have to make up the amount they need to buy the cat of gold according to the command of Phool Chand. While the widows worry at the collective sparse amount. Much to Kanak's ungodly delight Phool Chand barges into the ashram and throws his weight around the poor widows. He threatens them they'd better get their act together and deliver the gold cat at the afternoon worship at the mandir. Chaiya was polite enough to offer him a drink of water but he spurns the glass from her hand and yells, time is not that bad for him !that he would accept water from the hands of an untouchable widow! His dismissive dehumanising words yet again strengthen kanak who shares like wise belief and attitude towards widows in particular those at this ashram.. before leaving he warns Dhani she'd better turn up with the gold cat otherwise ,because of her this whole ashram will be pulled down! Kanak latches on to all the key threats he bashes Dhani with ,they may come in handy later on..
The evil black cat of hell pounces on the young innocent chick! Dhani retires to her room cowed down with the bully phool chand s about delivering the cat. Kanak enters the room closes the door behind her and fumes as she is hungry to tear this chick from limb to limb pluck every feather of her tiny delicate body. Like a cat she looks Dhani in the eyes ,wants to know where is her help coming from? Dhani replies Viplav and Kanak scoffs, she sure picked the right lover! any problems! no problem! she has her lover to sort them all! you create problems and the poor lover pays for it she taunts Dhani! my son was living his life peacefully, because of you he has ruined his life! Tell me something Dhani do you derive pleasure from ruining someone's life?dhani defends herself , you misunderstand chotti malkin as I never meant ill for her or Viplav.. I always mean well but don't know why? Kanak reels Dhani and begins to assault her, behind closed doors, what good to do? my husband died! I gave up everything and took on the role of widow hood! So much so came to live in this ashram ! Kanak turns ballistic and squeezes Dhani's face and sneers, just take a look at my daughter in law's arrogance! and she hurls her across the bed and grabs Dhani's wrist cruelly with tirpathi household gold kangans , and snarls I know you and your mother very well! You wont let go of Viplav!he's your gold mine isn't he?she digs in the kangans on Dhani's wrists! Cat died at your door and my son gets grief! Ayeee Dhani!remember what happened at the bell incident saving your life my son ended up nearly giving his life!now if something happens to him what will I do? Kanak pulls her up and hisses in her face , you ask my son for help , couldn't you have asked me you beggar! she grabs Dhani's head and gives it a good shake and screams in her face , what am I to you ?your mother in law then why didn't you ask me? all that money tht Viplav spends on you where do think that all comes from? It all my money she beats her chest! Dhani looks at Kanak pathetically .. pitifully , but Kanak carries on I knew full well that like a beggar that you are ,you will beg Viplav for the money! So I have already asked the jeweller to make a cat of gold already! now why the hell are you crying ,come with me to the mandir! and take the charity we offer! She insults Dhani! but Dhani cries bitterly and refuses to which Kanak hisses what did you say? Oh I see your trying to be self respecting and she slaps Dhani on the side of her head. I know well about your self respect! nothing is hidden ,besides it not you I am saving from insult but your ashram! before the afternoon worship the cat has to be given to the temple ,and yes don't worry about the money I'll give it you beggars!!.. and Kanak mocks Dhani and finally leaves the room!dhani cries bitterly but then suddenly wipes away her tears.. Kanak's tirade , physical and emotional assault on Dhani is based on the fact that her feeding Dhani poison halwa back fires. Moreover ,Kanak never accepted an inauspicious widow for her son, she is a dangerously greedy woman who hates the idea of letting Dashrant's wealth to seep out to anyone other than her and her immediate family .Recall how she pushed durga out of the out house too. By humiliating and disgracing Dhani by mocking her self-respect calling her a beggar ,is to frighten Dhani from marrying Viplav. She assumes that such assaults on Dhani will cripple her love and eventually she will herself leave Viplav if she has any shame.
Dhani suffers the same shame of accepting the gold cat from Viplav like her mother. But she knows when to stand by loved ones.Dulari shaken by Phool Chand bullying tactics plus accepting charity from her son in law packs her bags to leave . Dhani reminds her surely they cannot desert their ashram family like cowards and take the easy option and run. Bravely she takes a stand and bids her mother to trust her..
Phool Chand gathers a crowd , as he plans to yet again humiliate Dhani before all. Dhani and Rajlaxmi arrive with the gold cat. Phool Chand mocks her, hope its not stolen property as that is not accepted. She confirms its not stolen . Dashrant arrives for the unveiling of a rather large cat of gold. Phool Chand unveils it and a clay model of a cat is revealed. He is livid and Dashrant too, looks at Dhani for an explanation. Phool Chand yells look at this murderess! asked for a gold cat and she brings a cat of clay! phool chand loses it! his greed for money which comes here as nothing short of extortion! is hard to conceal .But being a bad loser he winds up the crowd again ,she needs to be punished! Dasharant watches aloof.. waits for the right time to intervene. Then as usual when the crowd gets noisy, he uses his authority, for special effects to shut the crowd, asks for time to investigate the matter of the clay cat! But Phool Chand adds to Dashrant's effect and frightens Dhani , that he wants instant justice! Dhani will be meted out the same treatment as she gave to the cat! Poison her! and then he defies Dashrant, if he cant give justice then resign from the post of being the chief priest maha pandit! Because this girl has mocked our traditions so she should be punished! Phool Chand incites the crowd! and warns Dashrant she will not be spared!
The knight in shining armour Viplav arrives! bearing that which will shut the biased ,bigoted, instigator Phool Chand! walks up and uncovers the gold cat! With a defiant look on his face! And comes and stands next to Dhani with the uncovered cat. Phool Chand asks ,she did the crime why are you compensating on her behalf , dryly he replies, because I am Dhani's husband to be . No one dare defy Viplav not even his dada ji. Mockingly he offers the cat as a tip to Phool Chand , take it then your cat of gold..accept it then offer it in your temple, and get off Dhani's back! phool chand smiles greedily at the cat.But Dhani is unconvinced by this whole proceeding ..and she steps forward and pleads before Phool Chand ,I cannot offer a cat of gold. Chotti malkin and vakeel babu offered to help me. but I refused. I am aware that if I have committed this sin ,then I have to pay for it . But I am a poor widow, where am I going to get the money to give you acat of gold. Also I did not steal ,why would I heap sin after sin upon myself. I believe in all the norms and values , but pardon me but I cannot believe in such norms and standards that is based on money! I cannot accept debt or charity because, my principles don't allow me to compromise. Hence according to my class ,what I can afford I can only offer this cat made out of clay! Phool Chand snarls with his huge teeth oyeee you haven't come here to listen your lecture on traditions and values what you have done you will get punished for that! And Viplav pulls Dhani back from a Phool Chand wagging finger .. and do you know what the punishment is? as soon as its dawn, you will have to leave Banaras! and the crowd yells in his support! Viplav replies icily and who's going to kick her out of Banaras you? over my dead body! These traditions and values you are rubbing in.. they have been made to support ,assist and enlighten human beings! That is why our ancestors have followed them.. traditions and values that strangles the poor, those norms themselves should be choked !and that too immediately! If god himself treats all humans equally , refrains from differentiating than who are you? what's wrong has she committed by offering a cat made out of clay?which book out lines that if a cat dies ,to get rid of it ,one must offer a cat of gold? No where is it written.. its humans who have made it to feed their greed! ifyou want to accept the clay cat ,than do so ,otherwise change your norm! says Viplav to phoolchad! Erhh I have another option too ,here accept the cat of gold and be happy! the truth and value of the words that Viplav speaks outweigh the precious metal gold. In fact its enlightenment that is priceless. That which removes barriers of all types created by caste ,colour or creed. To love..
Fine episode with substance. Suddenly kanak ,phool chand ,dashrant seemed dwarfed in thought word and action, before the simple logic of dhani and viplav.. simple yet turbulent.. hamlet53 9.2.16
