A total of 577 players are in the fray as all ten IPL franchises attempt to fill their roasters, which can consist of maximum 25 players and a minimum of 18 players.

201 slots are available across the franchises after 46 players were retained on October 31, 2024.

Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals do not have the option of right-to-match card as these two franchises retained a maximum of six players heading into the auction.

However, all the eight remaining franchises do have a RTM option available. Mumbai Indians can only use the RTM option for an uncapped player in the auction, as they have retained five capped players.

IPL Auction 2025 LIVE UPDATES, DAY 1: Yuzvendra Chahal

Not part of India’s white-ball set-up, Chahal has been one of the most successful bowlers in the IPL. A slightly unorthodox leggie – in terms of the line he operates – the 34-year-old would definitely garner interest. Punjab Kings and Gujarat Titans, who play on venues with big outfields, would suit Chahal and if Royal Challengers Bengaluru believe his experience of bowling at M Chinnaswamy is key, then his bid could end up in double digits.

-------------

R Ashwin

At 38, the off-spinner has been reinventing himself in T20s, and it would be interesting to see how much interest he generates. Most teams don’t fancy an off-spinner, but having said that there are franchises who rely heavily on match-ups and prefer having one. A return to Chennai Super Kings looks highly likely, but surely they would face competition.

--------------

Bhuvneshwar Kumar

He hasn’t been part of the Indian set-up for a while and there are signs that the world has already seen the best of him. However, if he is managed well, he could end up being a bankable bowler. Apart from offering wickets with the new ball, Kumar has also evolved into a good death-over bowler. Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals could go for him.

Mohammed Shami

Indian seamers are always in demand, but given his recent injury struggles, it remains to be seen if Shami can generate interest from all corners of the auction room. Still a proven operator with the new ball, teams like Chennai Super Kings, Gujarat Titans and Sunrisers Hyderabad would prefer him in their ranks.

10 teams, Rs 641.5 crore, and 204 slots up for grabs

The 10 franchises will collectively wield Rs 641.5 crore, aiming to fill 204 slots. Punjab Kings, with the largest purse of Rs 110.50 crore, are favourites to lead the charge for Pant. Meanwhile, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Rs 83 crore) and Delhi Capitals (Rs 73 crore) are also expected to be serious contenders. Delhi holds a Right to Match (RTM) card, but Pant’s strained ties with the franchise may deter them. Pant’s recent comment, ā€œMy retention wasn’t about money for sure,ā€ hints at a reluctant reunion.

Pant poised for mega payday at IPL auction

Rishabh Pant is set to be the highlight of the IPL mega auction starting Sunday, with his name expected to spark a bidding war reminiscent of his audacious no-look six at Perth. Among the 577 players going under the hammer, Pant seems poised to become the highest-paid player, with franchises gearing up to break the bank for his signature. smiley4

Pant’s big question: Breaching the Rs 25 crore mark

Can Pant become the first Indian to surpass Rs 25 crore in an IPL auction? Much depends on how franchises strategise their team composition. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, with only Rs 45 crore each, may not have the budget to pursue him. In contrast, Punjab Kings, under coach Ricky Ponting’s guidance, are reportedly saving their entire purse to secure the star keeper-batter.
