Preah Vihear Temple – A Hindu Shrine of Dispute
Location:
Cliffside in the Dângrêk Mountains, near the Cambodia–Thailand border.
Deity:
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this 11th-century temple is a prime example of Khmer architecture and Hindu devotion.
Why the Controversy?
Cambodia claims it as a part of its ancient Khmer heritage and currently administers the temple. Thailand disputes the territory surrounding the temple, arguing over a 4.6 sq km area near the complex. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) awarded the temple to Cambodia in 1962, but tensions flared again after the site was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008.
Cultural and Religious Significance
Though the temple is now in Cambodia, it reflects Hindu influences, particularly Shaivism, that spread through Southeast Asia during the early medieval period. Its position on a mountain signifies its spiritual link to Mount Kailash, Shiva’s mythical abode.
