regarding 'singing versatility'

hey guys,
according to u, wud u consider a singer who's almost "flawless" in only a particular genre of songs to be versatile, or a singer who can sing almost any type of song with rather less perfection but still with a pleasing voice? this issue is all the time raised in SRGMP so i wanted to know that what u guys in II3 think abt it.....sry if it is posted before....

ok tell me what versatlity means

i'll give you mainstream singers you can tell they are versatile or not

"a particular genre": that would definitely not be versatile.

only sonu nigam can be considered a versatile in current generation...

voices of Kailash Kher and Sukhwinder Singh make take them in different leagues..more suited to alaaps...
they cant/dont sing for hindi movie heros..

Shaan,Alka Yagnik,kumar sanu,udit can/should only sing for bollywood heroes

mauli in saregamapa is good singer on her own, but is really bad when u compare with other participants!!

In indian idol, there are hardly versatile singers..
puja can sing certain types of songs well, emon and amit can sing more varieties..chang sounds nice with certain songs, so does prashant...ankita.. well she is a dancer!

Alisha Chinoy -Not versatile at all. Onlu songs with western accents.
Kailash Kher- Suits more for Folk songs and alaps

Sukhwinder Singh-Suits more for Folk songs and alaps
Kunal Ganjawala- GOOd voice. to the extend versatile
Sunidhi Chauhan- Most Versatile female singer besides Ashaji


Shaan- more versatile than Kunal ganjawala good voice
Sonu Nigam- most versatile singer in the bollywood today and the best singer ever
Alka Yagnik- onlu for melodius songs. not versatile
Shreya Goshal- nbt versatile at all. but best singer in his own genre

This will more or less be my opinion too.....actually a few weeks ago i tuned in to SRGMP and there's a singer called musarrat abbas from himesh's rock gharana who was in bottom 3 as he sang a song outside of his "rahat fateh ali khan" genre and himesh pointed out that he shudn't take chances next time and shud stick to the genre he's good at.....now if u come to ii3, we see ankita....who's a better performer than being a singer (no offence to ankita fans, i like her too)....so if compared with musarrat, dont we see ankita also falling to a particular genre....the "performance" genre??? i think that if properly trained, she may also have the chance to become like sunidhi chauhan...

In indian idol presently the only versatile singers are emon,amit puja. Prashant's voice only suits specific genre and same with chang. Ankita just does the same thing again and again.

but tell me about alka and Shreya they are not versatile???

alka - fast - ek do teen, peppy numbers songs from saajan, melodious happy and sad love songs. can it be called versatile

same in case of Shreya - how can we forget her jadoo hai nasha hai, mujhe tumse and all other melodoius song.

ok they may not have sung item songs but would that means they are no versatile.but they have sung all other gener like semi classical, gazal,melodious with differenct moods,love songs ,sad songs

Sonu Nigam- is the best singer in bollywood and the most versatile. He has sung the most number of patriotic songs which very few singers can attempt. He can sing anything. His two pop albums were a super success. So undoubtedly versatile.
Shaan- He is amazing in fast songs and more western oriented songs. But his chaand sifarish was also great. So not the most versatile, but a great singer.
K.K - He is the second most versatile after Sonu. He too can sing anything.
Udit- He has never sung any party song/western song, not that I have heard of. So definitely a good singer but not as versatile as Sonu.But he is the best at pure hindi songs.
Kailesh Kher/Sukhwinder- Great voices and suited for specific songs. But these songs sound the best with their voice.
Kunal- Has this western twang to his voice. Not the most versatile, but good singer nevertheless.
Alisha- Not versatile, but definitely has this style in her voice and the songs she sings sound best in her voice.
Shreya- Great at Indian songs. Not that great in songs with a western touch other then Jadu Hai Nasha Hai. Can't remember anymore.
Sunidhi- A versatile singer definitely. She can sing anything, but not given the opportunity.
Alka- Her voice suits melodious songs the best.

Out of the current lot, Sonu, K.K and Sunidhi are most versatile. But having said that the others cannot be categorized as one genre singers only.
