WITH the taking out of an impressive colourful procession of Goddess Shoolini amidst great religious fervour, the three-day long state-level Shoolini Fair started here today.
The fair began with the traditional pooja of the goddess and a yajna performed at the temple of Goddess Shoolini (the presiding deity of the town) situated on the Shilly road area. The devotees sought the blessings of the goddess for the peace and prosperity of the town. The pooja was attended by several prominent citizens including the family members of the erstwhile ruler of the Baghat estate. Notably, the Shoolini Fair was started by the then ruler of the erstwhile Baghat state about 100 years ago to promote trade and cultural activities in the region.
The beautifully decorated palanquin of the goddess was received by the Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh along with Vidhan Sabha Speaker Gangu Ram Musafir, Irrigation and Public Health Minister Kaul Singh Thakur, Solan MLA Dr Rajeev Bindal, Kasauli MLA Raghu Raj, Doon MLA Lajja Ram, Zila Parishad Chairman Ram Kumar, Deputy Commissioner Rajesh Kumar, Superintendent of Police Gyaneshwer Singh and Congress leaders including Arvind Gupta, Surender Sethi, Ajay Singh Chauhan, Mohan Mehta, Sardar Singh and others after paying obeisance at the Old Sabzi Mandi in the Chowk Bazaar area of the town in the afternoon. Soon after, the leaders and prominent citizens of the town escorted the palanquin along with the crowd of devotees for starting the procession.
Earlier in the morning, milling crowds of devotees, especially women, started assembling in front of the temple of the goddess, considered to be an incarnation of Goddess Durga and went ecstatic as soon as they heard the temple bells chiming and hymns being sung. The beautiful sounds filled the atmosphere around the temple.
Similar enthusiasm was witnessed in every nook and corner of the town's bazaars, which appeared to be busting at the seams. Soon after the completion of the yajna in the afternoon, the idols of the goddess were placed in a beautifully decorated palanquin for carrying out the procession through the main bazaars from the temple to the DC office chowk to enable the devotees to seek the blessings of the goddess for a happy and prosperous life.
Thousands of people from all walks of life from Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur and other parts of the state and from Punjab and Haryana, especially women and children dressed in beautiful dresses, joined the celebrations.
As per time-honoured legends, Goddess Shoolini, also considered the younger sister of Maa Durga, appears in person before the devotees during the three days and fullfils every wish of the devotees that is made with sincere devotion. After the termination of the colourful procession at the DC office chowk, the palanquin was taken to the temple of her elder sister, Goddess Durga, situated at Ganj Bazaar, where she would stay as a special guest with Maa Durga for three days. The fair would conclude after Goddess Shoolini returns to her abode at Shilly road area on Sunday. During the three-day-long fair, cultural nights would be organised in which Bollywood playback singer Shreya Ghoshal, Anuj Sharma (of Indian Idol fame), Punjabi folk singer Bhupinder Singh Bhuppi and many other Himachali and Punjabi artistes would regale people. Thoda (traditional Himachali archery), wrestling and exhibitions by various government departments and private companies would be the other attractions of the fair. Governor V S Kokje would be the chief guest on the concluding day of the fair.
