Mumbai, July 28: There was palpable excitement in the Radio City studio, as Lata Mangeshkar's familiar voice drifted over the loudspeakers and personal stereo sets. A truly momentous occasion for the station, as it was the first to host an extended two-and-a-half-hour tete-a-tete with Mangeshkar. Her only other radio appearance being with the renowned Ameen Sayani.

Star RJ Sonu Nigam mapped her career chart from its inception to her insurmountable success. In the midst of the conversation, Nigam deftly acquired personal facts about the artiste's childhood, for instance, the fact that she had not had a haircut since the age of four—the secret behind those long tresses. The focus of the interview, however, was the hardships she faced starting as an artiste in the film industry and the hit songs that resulted despite those travails.

Dressed in her trademark white sari with gold motifs and her hair braided in two long plaits, the song bird captured the attention of the staff members, as she attempted to sing along with some of her popular songs. Adding to the melodious event were her ghungroo-studded anklets, and the host's enthusiasm as she mentioned that she made this appearance solely on his request, as a birthday present to the star. Nigam even aired his first song that he sang with Lata Mangeshkar on April 1, 1999, Khaamoshiya gungunane lagi.

Overwhelmed attendees, like last year's Indian Idol finalist Amit Sana, accompanied by his entire family, waited eagerly to greet her at the completion of the interview. At the end of the interview, Mangeshkar mentioned that on this day, she missed her late co-artistes Kishore Kumar, R D Burman and Mohammed Rafi.

😆😆 haha i agree he looks scary 😊 its actually very interesting to see the change in his appearance from his album Kismat to present..i remember thinking that he looked like kid on the cover of Kismat and now hes def changed😆

wunder who is inspiring him to put on such weird looks...Does he like himself like this when he luks at the mirror..God knows..I wud slap my brother if he came in front of me like this..Dont his sisters orhis wife have anything to say about this????😆😆😆

Yeah, Sonu looked like a kid in his film, Kash Aap hamare hote, too. His role was sweet and kiddish too. 😆 Maybe he wants to act again and he's trying to look like a Bollywood hero. 😕 But he's an amazing singer and should honestly just focus on his singing and RJ career.

Your hairstyles seem to be as versatile as your music. Well, I am versatile and I try to cater to all sections of the audience. For those who understand music, there is good music. But there might be others who may not be in tune with music, for them, I give them my hairstyle to talk about.

At first glance, his straight hair is disconcerting. The cutesie curls are gone and the new style does take some getting used to. Ten minutes later, his cascading mane seems perfectly fine. "Finally, people are loving it," he chuckles, running his fingers through his tresses. "It was Farah's (Khan) idea. And I said, karne mein kya haraz hai? I think it looks quite good, even on the screen."

But Sonu isn't amused by the extreme reactions his new hairstyle has evoked. Says he, "They're asking, 'Yeh aadmi apne baalon se kya kar raha hai?' But how does it matter to anyone what I do with my hair? As long as I don't roam naked on the streets or disturb society's ideas of decency, how does it bother anyone? At a recent stage show, instead of appreciating my singing abilities and the way I emceed the entire show, they were talking about my hairstyle."

Regaining his sense of humour, he laughs off the articles criticising his hair. He recounts, "A magazine even said that John Abraham's straight hair looks nice but Sonu Nigam's doesn't. Great. Look at it this way-Udit Narayan's hairstyle doesn't get talked about but mine does. If I'm being compared to a handsome hunk like John Abraham, it means you guys think I'm good-looking too. I take that positively.

He adds, "I've learnt to control my emotions. I don't get excited when I bump into celebrities or when I meet my idols. My journey has taught me how not to get super-excited when something clicks and not to get depressed when something doesn't."
