Jolly Das has been eliminated from Indian Idol 2. The decision to do so was taken on Friday evening when the other contestants of the show rebelled against the idea of Jolly being promoted to the top nine, after her absence from the show due to chicken pox. "Jolly hasn't recovered completely yet," says Anupama, senior vice-president, programming, Sony TV. "She hasn't been performing for the last 15 days and has missed out on many gala rounds. Also, this is the second case of chicken pox on the show. The channel and the production house were forced to taken the decision to drop her from the show as of now. But she allowed to come back on the third series of Indian Idol. She will figure straight in the final 12 and will not have to go through the preliminary rounds."
According to Anupama, the reason behind this is that other contestants of the show were unhappy about Jolly Das being given too much time, and importance.
"I know what it is to be down with chicken pox at this stage as I too have gone through this pain earlier in the same contest. But after Yashashree got voted out certain members in the group are upset with the decision of giving Jolly any more time. I feel that it's not fair to Yashashree and the rest of us as we are slogging day and night to put our best foot forward," says Neha Kakkar, an Indian Idol contestant.
This drastic change has become the topic of discussion on the sets of Indian Idol now, with two distinct points of view at play. While one camp is supporting Sony's decision, the other feels that Jolly should have been given a fair chance. Contestant Meenal Jain says: "It is unbelievable! After working so hard for months this is the last thing that one can expect. Jolly is genuinely unwell and hence cannot sing. Yes, I agree that the judges weren't too happy with Jolly in the first round but she could've improved after some rehearsals. She isn't a bad singer. In a contest only 50 per cent of talent is required, the rest depends on luck. Sooner or later we all have to go get out one by one. But what happened to Jolly was damn unfortunate."
We spoke to Gavin Wood director of formatting of Indian Idol about their decision to send Jolly Das back to Kolkata. "This was a decision that we were forced to take. But Jolly is allowed a free ticket in the third series of Indian Idol."
Apparently, this news was broken to her Friday evening. "I think she was taken aback when we spoke to her about it. This short term blow will benefit her tremendously in the long run. Since Jolly has a lot of time on hand she can use it constructively and make the most of it. She can train herself even better and even groom herself. I wish her all the luck,"says Wood.
Away in Kokatta, Jolly is upset about this sudden change. "It isn't fair," she says. "I'm unwell and everyone knows it. I'm speechless and do not know how to react! I can't believe that I'm not going to be part of the show any more."
However, She is hoping for a speedy recovery and promises to be back with a bang in the third season of Indian Idol.
