'Cut!', shouts Idol contestant
Sapana Patil
It has never happened before… in fact it's not supposed to happen on a reality show. Yet, it happened on Indian Idol 2.
It was like Varun Badola going blank and asking for a chance to re-shoot his performance at the semi-finals in Nach Baliye. Only this time, Panna Gill was allowed this favour by SET EVP (Executive Vice President) and business head Tarun Katial, who permitted a re-shoot of his performance.
Apparently, when Panna was shooting for the first gala round (telecast yesterday) on Saturday, he called out 'cut' in the middle of his performance. This infuriated Katial so much that he came down to the stage from the editing studio (where he monitors the goings on) and yelled at Gill.
According to sources, Katial was heard saying, "This is a serious show. This is not some film shooting that you ask for a cut." It seems he was so enraged at the contestant that Gill stood a chance of being expelled from the contest. When contacted, Gill explained, "When the audience started clapping, I couldn't hear the background music, and lost track of the song. I got so confused that I couldn't sing further. It was just god's grace and Mr Katial's generosity that I got a chance to sing again." Before the gala rounds are shot, all contestants are given enough time to practise with the background music. Hence, not being able to perform to something he had rehearsed could be contested as a genuine cause for complaint. About allowing the re-shoot, Katial, for his part, said, "There was a technical problem!"
