Discards make it to Indian Idol 5

Anu Malik proudly claimed that this years Indian Idol will lay emphasis on the 'V factor'. Indian Idol's resident judge acknowledged that the show faced such criticism in the past, but this year they've managed to unearth 17 singers who've made it to the competition purely on the merit of their voice.

While there's no disputing their quality, as many as five contestants in Indian Idol 5 have made their appearance in a reality show before.

29-year-old Vishwas Rai of Allahabad appeared on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2005, Shashi Suman(Patna) and Manisha Karmakar (Kolkata) participated on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2009, Ludhiana's Arvind Gujral was part of Sony's Waar Parriwar. Delhi's Yashraj Kapil won the unheralded show Choona Hai Aasmaan that aired on the now defunct Real TV.

Inevitably questions were raised as to what is the merit in having reality show discards (except Yashraj) in Indian Idol. Shouldn't such a show encourage just raw talent? Judges Anu Malik and Salim Merchant were quick to defend the presence of these contestants.

"The judges have chosen these 17 contestants purely on their singing ability. We've said that this year, it's the V Factor that we're looking at. When these contestants came to perform, we weren't aware of their history. Even if they've appeared elsewhere, don't they deserve a second chance if their singing has improved? We found them to be good enough singers to make it to the final 17." said Merchant.

Anu Malik adds, "At every audition, we were having thousands of applicants. They get barely few minutes to impress the judges. Then we don't ask them about their history. We had few former Indian Idol contestants too for the auditions but they weren't selected as they didn't sing well. Voice is the sole merit for selection. Besides, I'd like to point out that the rules state that you need to be in the age group of 14-29 to participate in our show. Rules don't bar a former reality show contestant to appear in our show"

We agree with the two judges but the issue here is not their voice but how can you have these guys as Indian Idols when Indians themselves didn't voted for four of them in those shows. Yashraj Kapil may have won Choona Hai Aasmaan, but the only time the show made news was when he fought with a female contestant, who accused the guy of bitching about her. Apparently, before this spat, the two were caught cozying to each other on camera. Now, such tainted figure certainly doesn't deserve to be Indian Idol.

To be fair to Kapil, that footage appeared to be scripted. Despite their reality show experience, if these five contestants have improved as singers, they deserve to be on Indian Idol.

V-factor? With all these Recycled contestants, I think they're really looking for the 'R' factor. 😆

Thanks for the article, SAS. At least they acknowledged that these contestants are recycled and not their findings. As long as they are singing well, I don't have a problem with them. Good singing is all I want from contestants. Anyways, I haven't seen today's episode, but judging from yesterday's episode ... singing isn't the only thing they're focusing on. Even weak performances were highly praised yesterday because of thumkas and jhatkas here and there.

Di, its all just empty words. They will start by saying they are focusing on voice and singing, and then as TRP ratings come into play more and more at the crucial stage in the season (after Top 12), all the drama will start again ... it does every year. Plus, ab Anu Malik ki ghatiya shayari se TRP toh badne waale nahi, they have to think of something!! 😆

Classic article.... Loved it....

I agree with the idea of giving them a second chance... But I dont understand why a winner should get a second chance after he has already won... That doesnt make any sense...

That's what I mentioned in another thread ....Anu Malik changes his tune so fast that the contestants don't know what hit them ....I just hope Salim and Sunidhi would keep him in check...
Anu Malik is kept in the show for those dramas ...watch when the actual gala starts and a particular contestant starts getting lesser votes .....sudden criticism ensues ...the contestant gets nervous .clips are shown to make that contestant look bad ......we have seen it all....My only hope is, all these singers who have already appeared on other shows know what Indian Idol and all these reality shows are all about ..and can keep their minds focused on singing alone....
I have my sympathy for the singers who have been just introduced to this world of drama ...here ur cool head and calmness are key factors too....
At the end of the day ...I hope ,at least this time they keep praising the contestant who have been consistent...Unlike last time..what they did with Shini and Prasenjit ......Don't criticise somebody when they give beautiful performances just because she is married or he doesn't have the looks ( Then why did u choose them in the 1st place ??)
Hope II 5 will prove me wrong.....The contestants are very talented ...But how they improve or deteriorate depends on how channel wants the show to go .....
And this time I hope Anu Malik won't disappoint me because he has 2 very talented , level headed , worthy judges who know a thing or 2 about music !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just me 2 cents...g'night...😛

I already commented on other thread on this topic. Yes, they shuld be given second chance but not to the winner or top 3 contestants atleast for next one/two years. If he/she is the winner or top 3 then I am sure they are recognised and encouraged already and most probably given chances in playback singing.(eg. Amit paul, Karunya, Emon..). The whole purpose of doing these shows EVERY YEAR is to unearth or encourage new talents.

Hi friends

i am new to this forum as a member but i was an old guest of this forum,i was lazy to register myself but today i thought if i have to voice my opinion i need to register. i am music lover and like music shows ,when i saw this topic,i could not resist but comment , i feel they are all talented, but because of public voting ,they had to exit in the early rounds,we always see non talented singers too were winners like prashant tamang. One striking thing is these singers have not given up hope after losing in other shows.they need platform to showcast their talent,nd i feel they can use every possibility they can ,they are not discarded,we liked them before too.
we all should see here that not all are born with silver spoon in their hands.aditya narayan -had he not been udit naraya's son who knows he also would be giving his auditions in such shows.correct me if i am wrong.
