Kolkata, December 12: They have come from Duttapukur, Nadia, Bankura and other rural signposts of Bengal. And they have come riding a shared dream for fame and acknowledgement of their skills. With 11 out of the 15 finalists selected for Bengali channel Tara's Shera Ei To Noi Shudhu Gaan talent hunt show coming from outside Kolkata, the urban-rural divide in talent and aspiration has now made its way to "Bengal's first music talent hunt show".
It is the same drive for accomplishment and distinction that earlier found the likes of Ruprekha and Aditi Paul merge with the national consciousness in reality-based talent shows like Fame Gurukul and Indian Idol. As a Tara release mentions: "For them, watching Abhijeet Sawant, Qazi and Ruprekha rake in fame and fortune in televised talent hunts was always a case of another person having all the luck." Though over 30,000 people put in an application for Zee Bangla's proposed talent hunt programme, Golden Voice, which goes on air on January 28, Oindrilla Ghosh, creative director of the channel, admits that "people living in rural areas are often more skillful than in the city." "It is almost certain that they have bigger dreams and ambitions. And coupled with that they are extremely talented. We expect the response to our show to be very big from outside Kolkata," says Ghosh. Not unlike their national counterparts, a complete makeover of the finalists is something that both shows are focussing on, other than also musically grooming the finalists by singers Haimanti Shukla and Srikanto Acharya for the Tara show, and Indranil Sen and Rashid Khan for Zee. But when it comes to the "360-degree makeover" that Zee is planning for its finalists, Ghosh foresees additional care for the suburban candidates. "Their aspirations often don't match up to their presentation skills, and these days onstage presentation is an important aspect for creating a successful artist. We are building up a team of professionals who will take care of these aspects," Ghosh adds. " Shera Ei To Noi Shudhu Gaan has already received around 50,000 calls and SMSes from viewers and what worked in its case is the trouble the channel took to visit places like Siliguri and Asansol to spot talent," says an official associated with the Tara show. In the clash of ability and ambition from outside the city's border, Debolina Bose from Subhasgram and Sutapa Mondol from Pratap Bhavan, Bankura, both finalists of Shera Ei To Noi Shudhu Gaan, will be aiming to be the first among equals.
