Part 6:
Alexandre watched closely as the journalist blinked back tears and turned back to him with a serious face.
Alexandre stood up and glanced at Emily: All yours.
Emily nodded and came to take his seat. Alex gave her arm a little encouraging squeeze and left.
Imlie sat down across Aditya with a grace of a lithe dancer.
Aditya kept his eyes steadily on the table between them, his head was filling with a zillion different questions, but what held it all back were those two rings. She was married now. The gulf between them was as big as the ocean, but his heart still raced.
Imlie inclined her head to one side to make eye-contact with him. It had taken her every waking hour to muster up the courage to see him since Alex announced that he had to be brought into the headquarters. She was going to give her best performance of having it together. Aditya Kumar Tripathi didn't affect her anymore, not in the way he affected that know-nothing teenager she once was. Aditya Kumar Tripathi was a married, family man and she was his interrogator who was merely doing her job.
It didn't matter that she noticed the faint sparkle of the few silver strands in his glorious hair, that was just Sita Maiyya's blessings of tinsel on his head. The years had been kind to him, the groves in his cheeks deepened a bit, giving him a look of distinction. What the, this guy was better looking than when she had met him! But he was Malini Didi's luck.
Imlie decided to keep the conversation in English: I hope you realize what a soup you have gotten into this time, Mr. Tripathi. Not only did you get in the middle of a coup, but you also nearly exposed my identity. We will need to put you in witness protection, in case any of the PM's aides saw you and you will need to sign a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) regarding my identity.
Aditya stayed quiet.
Imlie: This will not be a normal NDA, it is binding. If you sign it, you will agree to keeping my identity a secret or risk being taken out to save the operation's integrity. It doesn't help that you already told your cousin about your doubts, now he will have to sign the same.
Aditya finally looked up at her, betraying alarm: I will tell him I was mistaken.
Imlie gave him a tight smile: Good. We can arrange for that. You will still not be off the hook though. You will have to stay in witness protection until this Hungarian crisis has played out. We don't want you getting in the hands of the right wing government. Can you manage that?
Aditya looked away: Do I have a choice?
Imlie: No, you don't. We will let your boss go, he seems to know little about the whole matter.
Aditya: Thank you.
Imlie: Will you be signing the NDA? (She pushed the clipboard she was carrying toward him) Here you do have a choice.
Aditya took the board and signed it with a flourish.
Imlie: Read it first!
Aditya turned the page and signed again: I don't have to, I have nothing to lose.
Imlie's voice now betrayed annoyance: You could be signing off all your rights!
Aditya stared blankly: I don't care.
Imlie took a deep breath to steady herself: Will you be able to keep your journalistic zeal in check to keep my identity a secret? Afterall, you are the guy who ran straight into a clandestine coup with nothing but your camera. One couldn't think of anything more foolhardy if one tried.
Aditya shrugged and looked away, his temper rising. Now he was a fool to her, was he?
Imlie: Fine. If that is how you want to proceed, we will do it your way. What did you know about this coup? And before you answer, keep in mind that your brother is still in our custody.
Aditya glared at her now: You wouldn't.
Imlie: You don't know what I am capable of...
Aditya: Murder, probably.
The side of her lips twitched in a smile.
She scoffed: I work for Interpol, we are just regulators trying to keep the balance of power.
Aditya smiled slowly: Interpol does not arrest, kidnap, or do ground operations. You are not Interpol. You are something altogether more dangerous than that.
Imlie lost her cool: Shut up!!! (She looked surreptitiously in the direction of the glass she came in through). I would be very careful before saying another word. You already signed the NDA.
Aditya sat back leisurely: Then, you have nothing to lose. Just listen to my theory then. You have more than one weapon on you, I am sure, whereas I don't even have my phone. Shoot me right through the heart, whenever you feel like it, but listen to what I discovered so far.
Imlie gritted her teeth, willing him to stop talking with her eyes.
Aditya defied her just out of spite: You are the regional chief of RAW here in Lyon, France. The youngest female intelligence chief since Noor Inayat Khan, the World War II spy. We are at Interpol's headquarters here in Lyon, aren't we? Interpol is cooperating with you as a RAW agent, you are not working for them so much as they are working with you. That blond agent who is observing us from behind the walls right now is your French counterpart. The two of you worked your heads together to take down the Hungarian right wing government and install the caretaker government which is more sympathetic to your goals. And now, since I am the only witness to this operation, unintentionally compromising the political integrity of both India and France in the process, I am a major problem. Interpol, India, and France will want me dead rather than have any of this out regarding how they played their hand to control Eastern European politics. The overthrown Hungarian government is the least of my problems. RAW and the General Directorate of External Security however... (He smiled) Now you have a case to put me away in witness protection for as long as you want or worse...
Alexandre was impressed. This journalist had turned the table on Emily to his own detriment. The unflappable Emily, who had been doing her utmost to paint this guy as a clueless bystander, was clearly enraged.
Alexandre turned to the agent next to him: I need a thorough file on this guy.
Imlie sat back, seething: You are your own worst enemy.
Aditya sighed: If I am being imprisoned, there might as well be a good reason. Where am I being sent off to?
Imlie spat: What is WRONG with you!? Don't you think about anyone!? You have a family to go back to! What will you get by getting involved in this mess!?
Aditya just went back to his silent phase.
Alex walked back in: I think we have everything we need.
Emily was fuming: Yes, we do.
She took out the cuffs from her pockets and snapped one on Aditya's wrist. Then, she pulled hard and dragged him out of the interrogation room before Alex could say another word.
Imlie stopped in front of a black car and unlocked it with a remote.
Imlie: Get in!
Aditya, quietly: I want my phone.
Imlie scoffed: You have got to be kidding me. You are never getting your phone again. Get in or I will put you in.
Aditya looked down at her: Try.
Imlie saw him digging his heels in like the overgrown baby he often behaved like whenever he didn't get his way. She opened the door and snapped the other cuff next to the seat lock, then pushed him in and slammed the door shut.
Imlie got in the driving seat and started driving as fast as she was allowed.
Imlie, screaming: What were you trying to prove in there, huh!? Why do you always have to show off? You have literally put a bull's eye on your forehead! Alex will not let this be now. What did you get out of that other than losing all contact with your family!!!? You moron! You could have just pretended to be clueless and be let off the hook in a few weeks. Now, I don't know what to do with you (she raged at the car ahead by honking her horn).
Aditya calmly: Could you lower the volume a bit? I am still recovering from a concussion.
Imlie: I can give you another one, if it helps!
Aditya pouted: You shouldn't have pushed me by calling me a fool, if you cared so much about my wellbeing.
Imlie: When did I do that!? You are not a fool, you are an verified idiot with a death-wish!!!
Aditya: You drive nicely.
Imlie's jaw dropped, she just stared at him in exasperation.
Aditya: And you are fluent in English and French now. You have done a lot in ten years.
Imlie gritted out through her teeth: This. is. not. the. time. to reminisce.
Aditya eyebrows arched: It is the perfect time. I am about to be silenced, so it is now or never. I will take this chance to say I am very proud of you. And I would much rather it be you than that blond, taser-happy smirk-face. What was he called? (He said it slowly to annoy her more) Alex.
Imlie: Stop taking his name. You don't know his name.
Aditya: You just called him Alex.
Imlie screamed: STOP IT! Learn to be blind to things, if you know what is good for you. (She cooled a bit) And I am not about to kill you.
Aditya looked chest-fallen: Why not? I would rather you put me out than put me away in some basement somewhere. I really can't do without sunlight. That last time when I got kidnapped, the vitamin D deficiency really had me feeling depressed.
Imlie stopped the car: This is not a joke!
Aditya looked straight at her: I am done with this life, so I am perfectly serious.
Imlie was confused: You promised me you will become a good father to your child. You cannot wash your hands of all responsibility now. (She looked out the front) We have to think of a way to get you out of this self-made mess. Until then, you will cooperate with me. Swear it!!
Aditya looked out the window: Rather not. I am done swearing and making promises.
Imlie: Why are you being this way!? This is not the time to be childish.
Aditya, angrily: Ha, so now I am childish.
Imlie: Yes! Why are you digging your own grave like this? Do you realize what a dangerous operative Alex is? He will not have you compromise his mission. If he tased you any longer that day, you would have fried and that was before he knew how deep you were in this mission.
Aditya: No more dangerous than you are, I gather. So, just make it easy for him.
Imlie's face softened: You know I can't, I have to send you back to Malini Didi safe and sound.
Aditya rolled his eyes and sat back, arms-folded: First sign of humanity in you and it is all about Malini "Didi."
Imlie: I can't sit here and I argue with you. I am late for the pickup as it is. Sit right here. Alex will not touch you as long as you are in my care.
Aditya: Where are you going?
Imlie: I will be right back.
Imlie came back with a car seat in tow. There was a baby in it, Aditya realized with a sinking heart. Imlie had a baby. Aditya wished he was killed off during that electrocution before he saw this day.
Well, what do you think? Is Aditya keeping with his character?

Bold: This, but for all the wrong reasons. The best way to deal with problems is to look past them and ignore them has become his motto.
Great update MaryBarton. Loved the pace of this part and I could feel the palpable tension playing out in the interrogation room. I could picture the scene playing out and enjoyed it thoroughly. Loved the build up for the next part. Thankful for an Adi with working brain cells, you know him being an investigative journalist and all.
