Even this line, tumhari Umar badhaane ke liye hum tumhare plate se bhi kha lenge. He said this without even thinking, which surprised both of them at the moment, but seemed so natural. With Malini, he said romantic stuff to her which sounded all mushy, but it never felt natural. He either said to overcompensate his guilt, like the one you mentioned, he was feeling guilty about hiding Imlie matter from her, or he said it to just please her because she kept on reminding him that he can never be romantic. With imlie his lines are never mushy and feels natural. It comes from his heart because he loves her, there is no guilt or any expectation attached to it.
Yess he could also have been trying to remind himself it’s malini he chose because he had started to develop feelings for imlie and was trying desperately to hide from his own self, I remember in pd he told imlie ‘humare dil mein tumhare liye feelings ayi bhi hum maaneinge nahi humesha jhutlate raheinge’ I think he wasn’t just talking about his realisations in pd but way before that too all the excessive attention to malini that came out as a reaction to showing concern towards imlie, she rightly called him out on it in that conversation that he’s been doing it since the start, that even a little hamdardi for her scares him. If he didn’t have any feelings for her it wouldn’t scare him and there would be nothing to compensate for. But he clearly starting developing feelings slowly ever since the dil se track (it’s hard to pinpoint exactly when it happened with them but I think that’s when his feelings started to surface slowly) and any attention towards imlie gave him guilt because of those feelings.
