Saahir Azim Choudhary to me is a man who is pained. In his pain I see the depth of his love that sees no bounds. To him there is no wrong and no right, he loves. That is it. He loves to the point of destruction, perhaps self destruction. Yet, he does not blame the very person who takes him to the edge, to the very brink.
They say love knows no boundary

A metal casting, a foundry

Solid yet brittle, a reality yet a fable

Once cast, the mould is unbreakable

Only perhaps fire that makes it, to does it be malleable

Cold as ice but it is burning that brought about its being

Love a feeling, an emotion beyond seeing

What makes Saahir Azim Choudhary the man he is today?

From one Sahir to the Other... A beautiful coincidence.
That is what struck me the minute I listened to the poetry in the video... The poet being Sahir Ludhiyanvi...The People's Poet... and one of my favourite lyricists of the old hindi songs.

The day I heard that Harshad Chopda would play the male lead with the name Sahir and his hobby of penning down poems ...Sahir Ludhiyanvi is the name that kept resounding in my head.

Sahir Ludhiyanviji's poems and songs...takes us into the world of tragedies that have reflected his own life... Some times I wonder if some chapters from this poet's life will be recreated as Sahir's life in Humsafars... There are some striking resemblances between story of the real poet (Sahir Ludhiyanvi) and the reel poet (Sahir Azim Choudhary)... that I could go on listing the but then I guess it is against the rules of the forum to discuss the life of a person so this is where I stop revealing much. For those who have read the autobiography and biographies of the poet would know what I' talking about.

And now coming to this video... My take on it...

One word: Poetry in visuals !!!...Hats off to Gorky M!!!

But when have I just stopped at one word? This video has stirred up so much in me that I need to express it...So here I go...

The first shot with the close up of the eye...a perfect start to the video. Aren't eyes aptly called the windows to the soul? Through these very eyes we see the glimpse of Sahir's soul.
The shots that followed mirrored the poetic lines, showing Sahir in deep thoughts... frozen in time.
And then came the last shot where that subtle move of Sahir... with him leaning back and putting his hand below his chin kind of gives the thoughtful "If Only..." feel.
No wonder these shots struck a cord with me.

Shot in monochrome(shades of one color) here grey-scale to be precise... kind of sets the tone for the poem...each frame reflects the pathos of Sahir. Technically it was a good move as when shot in monochrome the subject gets the needed focus. And not once did my eye leave its focus from the subject here... Sahir.
The grey-scale lets us read more into the messages on the subject and encapsulates a mood better. Well I do love colors but then color will always be about fun and reality but black and white, that is where the soul lays. ... at least in film making and photography... and a surely needed element for this video.

I personally felt that use of monochrome gave the video an extra edge as the color white "reveals" and color black "conceals"... Just like Sahir reveals his pain and desire... he conceals the person who gave it to him. The deed of "revealing" is only for him and his sole companion -his loneliness... while the deed of "concealing" is for the world.

The video gives us a glimpse into Sahir's world which is embittered with what life and love has done to him... and how he wishes if these things are set right. It was all about the yearning of Sahir...the yearning for a better tomorrow... for companionship... for clarity of mind and for love.

I know it has been said umpteen number of times by many ... but I would like to repeat... Harshad Chopda dons the garb of Sahir like a second skin... Thanks for giving us one more character to dream by and love.

So moved was I after viewing the video that all I was left to do was to put forth a prayer for this very soul... For Sahir...

Sahir ki ye Arzoo... sun le tu Ae Khuda,

Kar ghamon se door ise... kar shikwon se juda;

Zindagi mein rang bhare... umeed ki ada,

Mohabbat ki jannat mein rahe... mehfooz ye sada.

Translation:

Oh Lord please listen to this desire of Sahir,

Take him away from sorrow... Detract him from reproaches;

Let the style of hope fill colours in life,

In the heaven of love... Let him be safe forever.

Word Help:

Shikwon se = from reproaches or complaints ; Ada = style ;
Jannat = heaven ; Mehfooz = safe ; Sada = forever.
