Thursday, December 1, 2005 (Mumbai):

The condition of Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan is reportedly stable and out of danger.

The actor had undergone a five-hour long surgery in Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital on Wednesday.

Doctors say Amitabh, who has been moved to the hospital's Intensive Care Unit, is being fed intravenously.

Operation necessary

The news of the surgery came as a shock to Bachchan's family and friends, as well as thousands of his fans.

The official version, when he was admitted to Lilavati Hospital, was that it was for routine tests to examine a swelling in his intestine.

But doctors at Lilavati say they had to operate on Bachchan because he had diverticulitis or perforation of the small intestine, which leads to the formation of pouches or bags.

In most cases medication is sufficient to cure diverticulitis, but in Bachchan's case surgery became necessary as one of the pouches had burst.

Close watch

The superstar was taken into the operation theatre on Wednesday at about 6 pm (IST) and a team of three doctors operated upon him till 10 pm (IST).

Soon afterwards, Bachchan was taken to the Intensive Care Unit where he will spend the next three days.

Doctors have also clarified that Amitabh's current condition has nothing to do with the Coolie episode.

But because of the extensive surgery he went through during that time, they had to operate carefully and will now have to monitor him closely.

Media gag

Doctors say that Big B's family had insisted on a media gag and hence, there was confusion when the news of operation first broke.

But almost seven hours later, the hospital issued a terse release, saying that the operation was successful and that he was stable.

The operation means that one of India's biggest and busiest superstars will be out of action for a while. What's important, though, is that he is out of danger.
