Rishi's converging dialect & diverging personality

Today's episode showcased the linguistic intelligence of Rishi. I know many of you will say that it was already shown when he spoke Uzbek, Mandarin and Bengali. Before posting the title of this topic, I ensured that it exactly refered to what I want to convey.

First an excerpt from Wiki page:
"Convergence refers to the process through which an individual shifts his speech patterns in interaction so that they more closely resemble the speech patterns of his interlocutor(s). People can converge through many features of communication such as their use of language, their "pronunciation, pause and utterance lengths, vocal intensities, non verbal behaviors, and intimacy of self disclosures", but they do not necessarily have to converge simultaneously at all of these levels. In fact people can both converge at some levels and diverge through others at the same time. People use convergence based on their perceptions of others, as well as what they are able to infer about them and their backgrounds."

Focusing on underlined aspects, today's episode very beautifully showed this subtle change. So far it was Rishi, whose dialect was typical Chandani-Chowk hindi vernacular. Today it was Ricky, one who speaks sophisticated language and very different from Rishi. Now you may wonder why is Ricky different from Rishi when they both are same person who loves Indira.
Yes, he was protective about her, her family and house from Sameer. He also confirmed that he loves Indira so he would not let Sameer close to her. But what disturbed me was he agreed to play a fair game. Game? Is this what he considered it? I agree he (probably) truly loves Indira and nobody wants to believe this. Sameer considers it fake because of Ricky's past and Indira considers it fake because of his irresponsible and indecisive nature. So to prove his true love, he accepts the challenge put forth by Sameer and also lays conditions. I wonder how would this turn out when Indira comes to know about it, even if Ricky /Rishi's feelings are true. This seems to me like playing with someone's emotion. Possibly I am hastily concluding but even if one has to just put up an act it's disturbing.
This is not the Rishi we know. Rishi is someone who supports what is right with out bothering about consequence. He just unconditionally wants to support and resolve problems of Indira. But today was only Ricky, who is rebellious brat. When he said that he was loved only by his mother and went to US to stay away from his father, his statement gave a feeling of arrogance similar to that of Indira. Also when he said he loves Indira, it sounded more like an obsession rather than proclamation. May be Indira's rejection has hit him hard that he wants every one to take his statements seriously.
I know most of you would say he wants to save her from the selfish reasons of Sameer but he would not let any one else also come close to Indira or reveal his identity. Today he was shown some what diverging from his real motive to arrive in Sharma house. May be I am wrong but promo gave an impression that he could not accept Indira's affirmation to his statement of leaving the house for ever.
Hats off to Sumit for very well bringing out the contrast in Rishi and Ricky 👏 both in person and language.

Well said Nels..

I agree there are divergences among Rishi and Ricky but more then arrogance I felt it was due to his surroundings along with the individual he was dealing with.. when he stated he never received a fathers love there was pain in his eyes.. portraying his disappointment at not being what his father expected of him.. hence his rebellious nature as Sameer states he does as he pleases because he prefers to be accepted as he is.. Ricky behaves and uses the dialect necessary to deal with an individual like Sameer who only understands the concept of profit and loss ..

I noticed annoyance on Rishi's face when Sameer mentioned their differing expectations as a game.. and anger when he refuted his love as a joke..according to me this is not a game but a method or an opportunity he has taken advantage of in order to keep Sameer within his limits..hence he just as quickly brought a smirk to his face and accepted the challenge.. I agree Rishi is going to have a tough time explaining this to Indira she has been hurt too many times to simply accept what he says..!!

Lovely Post !
We did in fact see another side to the character, and the difference was wonderfully portrayed in that scene.
However, I don't think that this is a game according to Rishi. Like what Binny said above, and the convergence you mentioned, he changes his style and attitude as according to the situation. And yes, that's the best way he could make Sameer understand.
But obviously Indu's not going to listen to what Rishi has to say, and it will contribute to more misunderstandings. The situation's like that. No one's to be blamed for what they conceive of each other.
I think Rishi/Ricky's nature comes from his inner turmoil. People just assume him to be one thing, and set a fixed image for him. They just don't try to understand him and neither is he ready to let anyone in. That's how he's been, and I'm curious to see how that'll be tackled. 😃

Yes, his arrogance is due to his surroundings. And same is true for Indira as well. Indira expected a lot from her father and possibly Rishi wanted his father to understand him.
I don't think he regrets for not living up to his father's expectations, instead he is annoyed for not being accepted by his father the way he is. Probably they have different philosophy of life.
What made me say that he is arrogant is, he is trying to explain Indira not to run away from her family whereas he himself has been unable to accept his family. No doubt he bonds well with his brother but only upto certain level. It is quite interesting to see that what he is trying to preach Indira is difficult for himself to follow. That's why when Sameer said that he comes and goes in-n-out of their life as per his wish without even bothering to inform them, I was amused. I was thinking if he was the same guy who stopped Indira from leaving her family and her responsibilities?

And regarding dialect, I meant about the grammar usage. When talking with Indira or the family members he is formal whereas with his brother it was a casual conversation. The language change was evident.

Nice observation 👏. Just mentioned this in different words below. He feels left out for not been understood and then shuts real himself.

^ Exactly! People didn't understand him when he wanted to, and now he doesn't expect anyone to either. It's like he doesn't want to take that risk. Now if only someone in the show can figure that out.
And regarding his relationship with his father, I guess that is a mixture of both not being able to live up to his father's expectations as well as his father not trying to understand him either. He advises Indu to not leave her family and responsibilities because he's doing that for the sake of Vidith bhaiyya. When he's speaking to Indu, he pretends to be Rishi and not Ricky. And being the type of character Rishi is, that's what he'll have to say to Indu.

I guess Rishi's a cover-up in order to hide his weakness. His weakness is his turmoil, his frustration too in way. And with a light-hearted act to brush it up, no one's even going to think there's more to him than the antics he does.

Oh, wow. Haven't seen today's episode yet, but just reading through this topic is giving me the feeling that the episode is another exciting one! Keep up the great discussions, everyone! Love the post, Nels!
I love the layers and complexities and flaws that both Indira and Ricky/Rishi have...You know, from the general flow of comments in this thread made me think of that time Rishi was absent-mindedly thinking out loud about how a person isn't valued in his own home...when Indira was looking at his drawings...That was a particularly poignant moment when I realized...there's a lot more to this man than we know...He's probably been spurned by his family on some level to be saying such a thing with a tinge of melancholy...He and Indira may be similar in that respect.
Off to watch the episode!

Exactly!! This was the highlight of the day. Must say SV is doing a fab job by showing us this contrast. His anguish of being mis-understood and trapped was evident when Sam gets him under hold over the bike. That rage was so visible.

ps: At first I was confused, took a while to realize that we share our dp with pic of same person 😊 .
