Research Finds Harry Potter Descended from Wizards

As if any more evidence was needed, researchers from Oxford University who have been studying aspects of wizarding genes, found that evidence points to Harry Potter descending from a magical bloodline. The Telegraph has a fun look this evening at 'an analysis of wizardry' study on the genetics of wizards from the Harry Potter novels. Their aim is to study wizard lineage in hopes to "address the heritability of magic." They have found, and have published in the British Medical Journal, that magical ability could indeed be passed down from generation to generation. Basing its research on elements of the story contained in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows," in addition to the first six books in the series, such as information on various family lineages including the Blacks, Gaunts, and Weasleys, the study goes into great detail on the topic. Dr. Knight, a Senior Researcher from the Wellcome Trust Centre for Human Genetics, says of this project:
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows provides a lot of valuable information about magical families that strongly suggests a role for genetic factors.

"For example, magic exists in at least seven generations of the Black family and at least three generations in others. We also see twins – the Patil and Weasley twins – with the same magical abilities."

The article details their findings, which, in part, contradict a previous study of wizard genes which 'claimed magical abilities depend on a recessive version of a gene: all wizards and witches thus have two copies of the wizard "W" gene, distinguishing it from the ordinary M, or Muggle, version.' TLC referenced this study here in 2005. Todays new Oxford-based study, however, builds upon the formers findings and says (with mildly spoilerific details in tow):

Rather than being all down to one gene, they believe enchanted skills can vary across a spectrum of strength, depending on the combined influence of a dominant gene for magic, which is turned on or off depending on epigenetic effects, and modified by the influence of a number of genes, along with the environment.

There appear to be three magical skills that are conferred by specific genes. "One of these is the capability to speak to snakes (parseltongue), known to be only a feature of those who are direct descendants of Slytherin.

Another is to be a seer; Sybill Trelawney, although not perfect, has this ability, and her great-great-grandmother was also extremely gifted in this respect.

Lastly, being a metamorphmagus (the ability to change one's physical appearance) is an ability that Nymphadora Tonks passed on to her son," says the BMJ paper.

While this hypothesis may only be based on the fictional world of author J. K. Rowling's creation, the researchers still wait for a full analysis of a wizard's genetic code in the future, and conclude: "magic shows strong evidence of heritability."

J.K. Rowling named Runner-Up for Time's Person of the Year

Time.com's Person of the Year (Vladimir Putin) was announced this morning. Though we knew JK Rowling was on the shortlist, the nominees have all been profiled on the magazine's Web site. J.K. Rowling's profile spans the whole phenomenon, the author's plans, and more.

The article also mentions the HP Alliance's summer podcast (as played on PotterCast), "Becoming Dumbledore's Army." The episode saw more than 100,000 downloads and, "In the days that followed, the student antigenocide coalition stand saw a 40% increase in sign-ups for high school chapters and a 52% increase in calls to its hotline, 1-800-GENOCIDE."

"When asked about the group, Rowling practically levitates off the couch, spilling her coffee along the way. "It's incredible, it's humbling, and it's uplifting to see people going out there and doing that in the name of your character," she says. She's especially pleased by the group's choice of mission, and the old Amnesty International worker in her surfaces. "What did my books preach against throughout? Bigotry, violence, struggles for power, no matter what. All of these things are happening in Darfur. So they really couldn't have chosen a better cause."
TIME has also put up a 10 Questions article in which we learn whom Draco married (more on this is also to be on the next PotterCast) and hear more about those who came from the Resurrection Stone, the epilogue, and more.
This one's good,must read!!

J. K. Rowling Named Among MSN's Most Influential Women of 2007

More news comes today concerning J. K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books has been included in MSN's list of The Most Influential Women of 2007. Included along with Ms. Rowling on the list this year are such influential people as Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, writer Tina Fey, and singer Carrie Underwood. The Lifestyle section of MSN notes of their choice:

This bittersweet year marks the last time anyone will be able to enjoy that most delicious of treats: a new Harry Potter novel. Rowling's wizarding world has not so much influenced modern culture as grown roots deep into the heart of it. From new words (muggles) to new drinks (some fools make their own butterbeer from Michelob Light and butterscotch Schnapps) to a new generation of kids who (gasp) read for pleasure, Rowling's epic fantasy series has made a lasting impact on, well, just about all of us. Her revelation this fall that beloved Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore is gay created a stir among fans that was mostly applauded. Whatever project Rowling has in store next promises to be a hot seller, if not a future big-screen blockbuster.

On a related note, The Associated Press released their annual Celebrity of the Year honor. For 2007, J. K. Rowling came in second place behind TV satirist and entertainer Steven Colbert of the Comedy Central program The Colbert Report. This list of people who AP feels have had the greatest impact on pop culture in 2007 was chosen by newspaper editors and broadcast producers. Congratulations Jo!
