CHAPTER 1 – THE MEETING
"Hey Mon!" squealed Lily as she saw her on the doorstep, "come on in!"
"Don't you dare invite me in like a guest! I am here to help with the preparations! Not eat free food!"
"Thank god you aren't like those friends of Mrs. Potter's… you wouldn't believe half their relatives…"
Monica had arrived at the Potter Mansion for Lily's and James' wedding. Lily was chattering away, clearly proving that she was in dire need of some help.
"Let me show you your room!" she said taking Monica's bag from her and leading her up the spiral stairs. James emerged out of a room.
"Why ever did my mother invite my great-aunt's cousin's daughter's sister-in-law's niece I do not know! All that girl wants to do is snog Siri - hello Mon!" he said when he spotted Monica.
"James! Congratulations!" she squealed giving him a friendly hug, "one more week you both will be Mr. and Mrs. Potter!"
"Thank you! How have you been? Long time no see!"
"You saw me last week!"
"Was it really last week? God these relatives are getting on my nerves! See you down Lily!" he said giving her a quick peck on the cheek and rushing downstairs. Monica smiled after him fondly.
"Is he really the same James who cursed Audrey's head to twice its size because she asked him to go out with her twice… because he thought she was nagging him!"
"It's true. He has changed a lot! This is your room Mon! I am sorry but we have only connecting rooms since all the good ones were taking by his posh relatives and all… some ritual in wizard wedding that the invitees should stay in the place where the wedding is supposed to take place!"
"Ya I know that! Thanks Lily… I think I will unpack myself! You don't have to do that!" she said when Lily had started magicking all her clothes into the cupboards.
"Least I can do for all your help!"
"Lily! I am your best friend and if I don't help you, I would be a loser!"
There was silence and Lily was debating on something. She did not know if it was a good time to mention this.
"Sirius has his own place!" she blurted out.
"What?" asked Monica, at a loss of words after hearing his name after a long time.
"Yes! His uncle left him some money… and a motorcycle…"
"Oh!" she paused, "Good for him then!"
There was an uncomfortable silence during which Lily sat down opposite Monica in an armchair.
"So what is going on with you and Amos?"
"Well … we are going on great! Just fine…"
"Oh!" Lily said sounding disappointed.
"Lily! Alice is here!"
"Coming James!" she yelled back and rushed downstairs, giving Monica an apologetic look.
"Get some sleep Mon and come down for the evening dinner." She said before she left, "Oh and Alice will be in your adjacent room if you want to meet her…" she added.
Monica nodded and went to sleep.
*~*
Monica woke up and rubbed her eyes. For a moment she wondered where she was. Then it hit her that she was in the potter mansion. She vaguely remembered Lily telling her that Alice was in the adjoining room and wanted to meet her. She pushed open the door on the side of her room and entered the room.
"Hey Alice… long..." She stopped short when she saw who was really standing there.
Sirius had been putting some boxes up in the loft with his wand and turned at the sound of a voice. He was wearing a black half-sleeved shirt which fell behind his shoulders when he turned. His hair had grown a little longer than it used to be and he pushed it out of his stunned blue eyes.
She suddenly felt conscious of what she was wearing. A spaghetti white top with pink shorts. They just looked at each other without knowing what to say.
"I… I am sorry… I thought that Alice was here…" said Monica after a while.
"Alice is on the other side of your room." Replied Sirius.
"Oh! I didn't see that room!" she said.
There was more silence.
"I guess we had to meet someday!" said Sirius laughing awkwardly.
"I guess!" she said smiling, put at ease when she saw that she wasn't the only one feeling awkward. She stared at how Sirius had grown, if possible, more handsome than before. She felt a familiar surge of feelings for him rise inside her heart. He looked at her with his intense blue eyes.
"Maid of honor huh?" he asked her.
"Best man huh?" she asked him, nodding an answer to his question. He nodded and took a few steps closer to her.
"What's going on with you?" she asked, trying not to think how great he looked.
"Nothing… my uncle left me some money and I have my own place now…"
"I know. Lily told me. It's great that you are standing on your own feet now!" there was silence. Monica wanted to ask something but did not know how to approach the topic.
"Umm…"
"Are you seeing anyone now?" she blurted out and could have kicked herself the moment those words came out of her mouth.
"Naa! Not in any serious relationship… a couple of dates maybe occasionally…"
"Flora?"
"Puh-Lease! We both had nothing in common!"
"Oh!" she said feeling a little pleased.
"What about you?"
"What?"
"Are you seeing anyone?"
Say Amos. Tell him about Amos! She thought.
"Well… no…"
Why the hell did you say that Monica? You should have told him the truth! She chided herself. But she couldn't think rationally then.
"Really?" asked Sirius, his eyes smiling.
No! No! Not really! Amos! I am seeing Amos Diggory!
"Really!" she said.
Sirius grinned widely and walked closer to her.
"It's been a long time…" he said in a low voice, "6 years…" she felt tears sting her eyes and blinked them away furiously. He raised a hand and stroked her cheek. She took in a sharp breath. HE reached out and removed the crab clip that was holding her long, black hair up. The hair fell down in waves and Sirius ran his fingers through them. She looked up hesitatingly into his eyes. He stepped back slowly.
"I always thought that you looked better with your hair let loose!" he said, breaking the moment.
"I had better be going now. I have to see Alice…" she said stepping back and turning to go.
"Nicky wait!" he called out after a couple of seconds. She stopped in her tracks, holding the door to close behind her. It had been 6 years since anyone had called her out. It had been Sirius' special nickname for her as he felt that 'Mon' was too common. She slowly turned her head to look at him, tears glistening in her violet eyes. He placed his hand over hers on the doorknob and gently pulled her back inside the room. She did not protest as he pulled her into the shadows of the door. She was under the spell of his eyes… the eyes that had won over her. He leaned in slowly to kiss her. She tilted her head and kissed him back, throwing her arms around his neck. A tear ran down her cheek and Sirius wiped it away with a finger. They slowly broke apart and Monica pushed past him closing the door behind her with a bang. She leaned against the door on the other side.
Did I just think that I was over him? No way! I still love him. But do I want to go down that road again?
Sirius stares at the door that closed in front of him.
What have I done? I am supposed to be over her! But looking at her, standing in front of me brought back all the feelings I had for her… have for her. I love her so much…
