please update. it's a really nice story.

I do not have any words to apologise. I have been busy and have had a brief writers block. I know I have written and rewritten this chapter at least 10 times!! It has not come out as well as I hoped but is much better than some of the versions.

Thank you for still bearing with me and continuing to read. I must warn you that the story has not progressed much.

Now I am considering two options with the future of this story, have explained them after the chapter. Please let me know which one you would like to read.

Next chapter will be slow, but I promise not to try my best and not make it as much time as this one.

Other than this - the usual - I do not own Harry Potter.

Chapter 22 - Heir or not

The brief spell of silence was broken by a shrill voice screaming at young Salazar

"How can you be so calm about this? That ... That being ... That murderer is writing you a letter ... The audacity of him... And you are acting as if it's nothing? Did you forget that he killed your parents and Sirius and Remus and...

But no one found out who else she was going to list as the look Salazar gave the Ravenclaw founder was enough to stop her from ranting.

"I know what he did and who he killed. Thanks." Replied Salazar icily

All traces of kindness, on Salazar's face, were replaced by the coldness that made others want to run in the opposite direction. And for the first time they realised why Salazar Slytherin was one of the most feared wizards in history.

"It seems the inevitable has happened, although it is a little later than I expected..." Salazar started in a grave voice before looking into Ravenclaw's eyes directly

"Do you think Voldemort is a fool Hermione? Is he a fool to write such a childish letter and expect a positive reply from the 'Salazar Slytherin' founder of the house known for its cunningness?" Having asked this, Salazar looked at Ravenclaw in the eyes until she looked down and shook her head.

"I thought so. Now, to answer your question regarding my calm behaviour; Well Hermione, I can get angry, and rant like a child, but that will neither solve the problem nor help in any other way. Instead, by being calm and reading between the lines of that letter, I can analyse the situation and react accordingly."

However before he could continue Rowena interrupted him, "that letter is full of arrogance, what hidden meaning could it possibly have?"

"It means that he not only wants to duel his great ancestor and the mighty Salazar Slytherin; but also defeat him and prove that he is greater than 'the Salazar Slytherin'. What concerns me more is not his intention, but the careless way he is handling this. This childish letter, as you so eloquently put it, proves that he is sure that he will live to tell the tale of his victory over Salazar Slytherin. Now the question to ask is why? Why is he so sure of his victory? Did he take the same steps to immortality, which the Voldemort in our world did? If so, then we might be able to defeat him quicker than we did in our world.

"How can we defeat him quicker than our world if, this Voldemort has done the same ritual to be immortal? I mean would it not make the task of defeating him become much more difficult?" Helga gently asked the question that was on everyone's mind before Rowena had a chance to argue further.

This question however made Salazar look at the confused faces of the people from this dimension and also his friends

"Well it seems that before I go into details I must explain what the Voldemort of our world did, so that everyone here is on the same footing." Salazar started before gesturing everyone to sit down.

Once everyone was comfortably seated, he began, "The Voldemort in our world created seven Horcruxes. Yes Headmaster, seven."

"What exactly is a Horcrux, and why is it so important?" asked Lily

"Ah, I was wondering who would ask that. A Horcrux is the word used for an object in which a person has concealed part of their soul. By putting a piece of their soul in a container outside their body, a witch or wizard ensures that they still live on even after the body is attacked or destroyed as a part of their soul still exists on this plane, undamaged. However, few would want this. Death is more preferable. It is the reason why you won't find much detail on making Horcruxes in many Dark Arts books. Splitting the soul is unnatural, an act of violation as the soul is supposed to remain whole."

He looked around to see if anyone had any questions, when he was met with horrified looks from people around him.

"To split one's soul, one must commit the supreme act of evil: Murder. Killing rips the soul. A wizard wanting to make a Horcrux would use this to his advantage. He would encase this torn portion in an object, by using a spell. Now if a witch or wizard who has created a Horcrux was killed, their body will be destroyed and they would be reduced to little less than spirit. They will have power to possess animals and other humans. However, by doing so, it will deplete the life force of the host and reduce their life span." Salazar took another pause to make sure that everyone understood the situation as this was critical. When he did not find any confused faces he continued.

"Voldemort, however, decided to go further. One Horcrux was not enough for him. He wanted to push the boundaries, go beyond what many would call conventional evil. He split his soul into seven parts.

"Now there is only one documented way of killing a Wizard with a Horcrux. That is to find each Horcrux and destroy it, before going after the wizard himself. Destruction of a Horcrux is difficult, but not impossible, and it requires that the container to be damaged completely beyond physical or magical repair."

"However, there is a danger in this method. If the wizard has made more than one Horcrux, and if even one Horcrux survives, the wizard will not die. In my previous life I had come across this problem and developed a ritual that needs only one Horcrux and by destroying that one piece of soul, all other Horcruxes will be destroyed. I never actually got around to making this public but I have documented this. The key to this method is that the wizard must never have been hit with killing curse or be reduced to the spirit form.

"It seems that in this world, Voldemort has not been hit by the killing curse thus, we should be able to use this method. It only requires one of his Horcruxes and a potion. And if this Voldemort used the same hiding spots as ours..."

Salazar trailed off as Helga finished his sentence

"...then we should be able to find the required Horcrux in Hogwarts itself and then it will only be the matter of brewing the potion. That's brilliant Sal."

Even Godric and Rowena beamed at this piece of information.

However, Salazar was looking around the people from this universe before asking them if they had any questions.

Just as he expected, Dumbledore had lost the twinkle in his eyes and was now staring at the founders (especially Salazar) with wide eyes.

"There is a Horcrux within Hogwarts?"

"Well, it was in our world so wouldn't hurt to check here as well now would it" Gryffindor said.

"But we need a plan... and you need to write a reply to Voldemort, Harry" as always Rowena tried to organise things.

"No I am not going to write to him, if I am right about my research, I know exactly how I am going to reply to him. Once we destroy all his Horcruxes together, he will feel it. It will be similar to the feeling of being disowned from a house." Salazar smirked.

"So he will think that due to his reply you have disowned him and he will get an opportunity to attack" Sirius spoke for the first time - with a mischievous glint in his eyes.

"But then why don't you disown him, wouldn't doing that take away some of his powers?" the ever level headed Remus responded.

"Disowning a person will strip him of the family magic and hereditary gifts, yes. But Voldemort will only get it if he is a descendent from my heir. And as far as I am aware, I did not have any heir." Salazar replied smugly

"What do you mean? Voldemort's family are the last known descendants of Salazar Slytherin." James asked slowly coming out of his shock.

Except raising an eyebrow, Salazar did not acknowledge the seemingly rude tone of the question.

"Well Helga here is my wife, but she comes from a Matriarchal family. It means that any daughters born to her (and their subsequent children) will not be eligible to carry forward their father's name, legacy, or become the heirs of any other family. Hence, Tom may be a descendent of my children, but he will never be my heir. At the most he might be able to claim being an heir of Hufflepuff, but I doubt that. You see, Helga and I only had two daughters. So for all purposes, the Slytherin line died with me."

A brief silence enveloped the room after this startling announcement. This gave everyone a moment to organise their thoughts.

Dumbledore was the first to break this silence that had encased the room.

"Lord Slytherin, how long will it take complete this ritual?"

"The Ritual is very simple; it only requires us to brew a potion. This will take about 6 hours; maybe less if I have some help to prepare the ingredients."

"I must admit I did not think of there being such a simple solution for this problem. I assumed that to destroy the vilest pieces of dark objects, the counter will also be a little complicated." Dumbledore expressed.

"Whilst the process is pretty simple, I agree that not everyone will be able to make this potion. The complication is not the process of brewing the potion, but collecting the ingredients. Some of the ingredients required for this potion are extremely rare, if not impossible to get. For example, for this potion we require the powder of a dragon's horn, drops of a phoenix's blood that is willingly given, unicorn tail hair, Ashwinder eggs, powder of unicorn's horn and griffin feather and claw and some acromantula venom. Other than that we need plenty of basilisk venom and basilisk skin. In addition to these we need some readily available ingredients as well. I will have most of these in my storage with a stasis charm on them. However we will need to go to the forest to get the unicorn's tail hair and some other basic potion ingredients.

Having said this Salazar paused and took a sip of water, whilst looking around.

"So we need to do get organised here. First things first, Sal, you need to go into your store and make a list of things we need to get from the forest. After that some of us will go to the forest and get those ingredients. And the others will go and get the Horcrux. Sal how long will it take for Voldemort to feel the effects of the potion?"

"Almost immediately, after the Horcruxes are destroyed. So more or less five to six hours after we get all the ingredients. So we can expect an attack tonight or tomorrow morning at the earliest."

"Tonight? But we do not have a plan or enough reinforcements!!" Lily exclaimed before anyone else had a chance to add anything.

Seeing the hesitant and uncomfortable look on her friends' faces, Helga explained

"We do not require any form of assistance. As long as the four of us are inside the perimeter of the castle; we alone can defend it against any size of the army. Time may have erased the memory of the importance of The Lord of Land; but I am sure you will see that, as long as Sal is alive and in the castle, no harm can befall on its residents."

"And as Sal here never had a blood heir till now the wards and true protection of the castle still responds to him, as the original master of the wards. The protection that you now see on this castle was put by Helga, Godric and I after Sal left. This was done to ensure no harm comes to castle in his absence. But it is not even a tenth of its original protection. We tried to figure out how it was done but could never make it work" Rowena finished by giving Salazar an annoyed and frustrated look

"That is because the original protections are made in Parsel magic and some blood wards. I know blood wards are considered dark magic and there is a reason behind that. Blood magic is very volatile and a minor mistake can take your life. But that is a matter of another time." Salazar explained.

"What we need now is to prepare for the battle and have a battle plan ready. I think it's best if we divide ourselves in two parts: first team can collect the Horcrux and help in collecting and preparing the potion whilst the others prepare a battle plan and reinforce the protections." A determined Godric said

"I agree Ric. You and Row would be the best people for the battle preparation. Maybe the headmaster and some of the teachers can help to ensure all students will be in their dormitories." Salazar looked at the headmaster and the two head of houses present.

"We agree, Lord Slytherin, I will alert Pomona and Severus can go and talk to Filius. After that we shall all meet here at the headmaster's office?" Minerva asked looking at Godric

"Actually professor, can professor Snape be available to help us, seeing as he is the potions master." Salazar requested

"Of course, that is fine. I can alert Pomona and Filius immediately and ask them to join me in my office immediately, whilst Minerva can go with Lord Gryffindor" Albus interjected.

"Yes that would be for the best. Rowena will be here to escort the rest of you to the planning room. Salazar and his group can join us there after they finish with their task." Godric said

"What would the four of you like to do? Do you wish to join us in the planning session or go with Helga and Sal?" Rowena gently asked the Marauders and Lily.

"Can I come with you?" Lily asked Salazar tentatively

"Of course" Salazar replied with a smile, after giving her a long searching look.

"Who else would like to join us?" Helga asked cheerfully

"I suppose Remus, Sirius and I will join you as well." Said James

"You are all welcome Professors Potter, Black and Lupin. So shall we get the list ready?" Helga replied

AN: Ok so there are two options from here - 1. I show the war, and after that the Founders goes back and not much interaction with people from this world. The story will end as they come back to the original timeline.

2. The founder growing closer to the people in this world and after the war, decide to stay in the same world. They will then tell the truth to the world and be accepted. They will also grow close to the people from this world. The story will continue to focus on the relationships and how the founders transform the world for good.
